Gryphons Slam Falcons

What could be their best half of basketball this year the Rocky Mount Gryphons trailing 45-41 at the half came out of the locker room running and take down The Falcons of South Central 82-67.

Donte Battle score eight points and had five rebounds the first five minutes of the third quarter and then watched Exzavier Cooper score 13 of his 16 in the second half along with Tecoby Hines who scored all 11 of his in the second half. Down the stretch the Gryphons pulled away as Tabias Hilliard made eight straight free throws a welcome sight for a team that struggles at the line.

Rocky Mount dominated the boards winning the rebound battle 51-32. Donte Battle had 12 leading the way. Tecoby Hines had nine rebounds and almost joined Battle with a double double. Battle had 12 points /12 rebounds while Hines was 11/9 on the night. Exzavier Battle had a 16/7.

Rocky Mount is now 7-2 on the season.

The girls lined up for the opening tip and all five Falcon players were taller at each position than the Gryphons. This game was nip and tuck affair South Central was able to wear down the Lady Gryphons and keep their record undefeated as they beat Rocky Mount 59-52.

Timisha Walker and J'Kyra Brown did all they could scoring 21 and 18. Tia Hudgins slowed by a sore ankle had seven so the three inside player for the Lady Gryphons score 46 of the 52 points.

The Lady Gryphons had a chance down 52-50, they sent the Falcons to the foul line where they were only two of five but all three misses the Falcons got and converted back at the foul line. Pam Gainey went with six players for all but about thirty seconds just before the half . By games end there wasn't any jump left in the legs of the Lady Gryphons.

Rocky Mount falls to 7-2 while South Central remains undefeated at 6-0.

Three pm Saturday afternoon the Tarboro Viking go after their second straight 2-A football title meeting Winston Salem Carver. I find it very hard to pick against Tarboro in this one but this game will not be easy.

Tarboro 28 Carver 26. If you go on line you can actually watch the game on http://www.news14.com. Time Warner has the TV rights and the game is live throughout North Carolina on all Time Warner Cable systems. Jammin 993 will start their radio coverage at 2.30 from Winston Salem.

Good Luck Vikings!

Whitley Making Eighth State championship Game

When the Tarboro Vikings step off the bus Saturday and enter B B&T Stadium it will be their third straight trip to the championship game. One of the coaches A B Whitley this will be the eighth trip which is not bad considering this is his hobby not his life’s work.

Whitley a 1967 Northern Nash graduate became a volunteer coach while he was still in college for Northern. Despite his passion for coaching college graduation brought about a job with the USDA. During his stops in Swansboro and in Murfreesboro A B volunteered coaching and finally upon his return to the Rocky Mount area helped Raymond Cobb at North Edgecombe with scouting for Raymond in the playoffs in 1991.

Cobb was impressed enough with A B’s scouting reports to ask him to join him coaching the next year. Two State championships and three second place finishes later Whitley followed Cobb when he moved to SouthWest Edgecombe.

A B Whitley found that he wanted to quit making the afternoon drives to Pinetops and wanted to stick closer to Rocky Mount. Jeff Craddock would not have none of that and persuaded Whitley that Tarboro was well worth the drive each day in the fall. Two straight trips to the states and winning the title last year Whitley once again wanted to stay home in Rocky Mount.

A B joined Dickie Schott’s staff at Rocky Mount this season and after a few games resigned citing coaching philosophy difference’s. Now with nothing to do on weekday afternoons Whitley visited a Tarboro practice and is barraged by the coaches to come put on a Tarboro coaching shirt. Now retired with the USDA Whitley just didn’t think he wanted to make the trip to Tarboro every day.

After a Friday night game which Whitley watch from the sidelines Tarboro coach Jeff Craddock told Whitley that he was praying hard for Whitley’s return and would keep praying until it happened. Whitley was on the practice field that following Monday which was the game after Tarboro gave up 35 points to Roanoke Rapids.

The rest is history as Tarboro has found their way back to the State Championship mainly because of the improvement of the defense Whitley’s specialty. How much improvement has the defense had since Whitley’s return. They held Roanoke Rapids to 14 points the second time around with the Yellow Jackets in the playoffs.

Why is it that one man can be so lucky that he could make eight visits to a state championship game and stand on the sidelines and coach defense? Especially since this is a hobby. There is no doubt if you have ever watched his defenses perform you realize that the man knows his defenses. He has that ability to get the players to respond in a positive way. He gets their respect because he respects each of the players. If you have ever watched A B’s demeanor on the side lines he is a teacher not a screamer.

I knew A B before because of football but I learned of A B Whitley the man back during Hurricane Floyd. His mother lives in my neighborhood. I had a tree down in my backyard and I was hauling limbs and what I could get to the street. A B who had been to his mother’s house to get her yard in order was walking the neighborhood cutting limbs for people in the neighborhood who needed a chain saw.

A B Whitley will step on the field in Winston Salem Saturday coaching in a State Championship for the eighth time. A victory will be his fourth, Win or lose A B Whitley is a champion both on the field and in life.

Whitley along with Coach Jeff Craddock and his coaches and some players will join me Sunday night on a special addition of the Stretchlon Sports Show on WHIG-TV. Hopefully we will be talking to the State champs again.

Gryphons Back On Winning Ways

Just two minutes into tonight's game with the Cougars of SouthWest Edgecombe and trailing 3-2. Mike Gainey inserted the second unit into the game and in a matter of just a few seconds the Gryphons had complete control of tonight's affair. Mike Gainey Jr. (MJ) hit two straight three point buckets and the Cougars would never see the lead again. MJ has his career high by the half (12) at that point. Tecoby Hines playing with the second unit lead all scorers with 16 and 10 rebound in limited action. All fourteen players who suited up had multiple minutes by half time. Twelve players score in the game. Twelve different players had rebounds.

Hines scored 16, followed by MJ with 14. Rocky Mount out rebounded the Cougars 42-24. The turnover battle was even so to speak 24-23 Cougars with the edge. The next action for the Gryphons is home Friday night hosting South Central a team they went overtime with last week in Winterville.

Final score Gryphons 68- SWE 53 but the score is no where near the total domination by the Gryphons. The Gryphons find themselves 6-2 heading into Friday night's game.

Football has a rule that once a team gets a 40 point lead they let the clock run continuously and tonight's girl's game there was a need once the lead hit forty to run the clock. I have seen Sandra Langley's girls teams play all the way back when Ahoskie and SouthWest use to tangle and this is about as short of a team as she has ever had. The Lady Gryphon guards were just as big as the biggest Cougar player.

Tonight the Lady Gryphons make the Cougars clawless in dismantling the Cougars 85-27. Marquita Hines and Tia Hudgins lead the way with 18 each. Timisha Walker added 14, J'Kyra Brown 13 as the first team hardly broke a sweat.

The Lady Gryphons are now 7-1 and will face the only team to beat them at this point in the season in South Central who won by ten at their place last week.

Come early Friday night because I suspect the place will be packed.

Beddingfield topples Gryphons

The Bruins of Beddingfield made shots early and never slacked up as they out gun the Gryphons at Rocky Mount 91-79. The Bruins nailed three point shots and the end of the first quarter , again at the half and rattled a mid court three pointer at the end of the third which just rimmed out.

Rocky Mount never lead after the first quarter which they trailed 24-18. The half time score was 45-36 but the Gryphons had trimmed the lead to 67-64 after three but could not keep up in the fourth. The Bruins drove to the basket often and when the Gryphons stopped the penetration they kicked out for a three.

Exzavier Cooper lead the Gryphons with 23. Dante Battle followed with 16. Kenyatta Bullock had 12 for the game. Levon Brutus lead the Gryphon rebounders with eight. Rocky Mount won the battle on the boards 40-35 but had more turnovers 13-8.

Pam Gainey started on her second set of three hundred wins as the Lady Gryphons smashed beddingfield in the second half winning 61-37 after having to have a Tia Hudgins shot at the buzzer in order to beat Beddingfield at their place.

The score was just 22-17 Gryphons at the half but the Gryphons outscored the Lady Bruins 39-20 in the second half. Rocky Mount out rebounded Beddingfield 45-22 and also had more turnovers 25-22. The turnover area is one place the Lady Gryphons have to improve.

J'Kyra Brown lead the ladies with sixteen points and she also pulled down nine rebounds. Tia Hudgins was the only double digit scorer for Rocky Mount with 11. Kushunn Seabreeze lead the rebounding pulling down 11.

No time to rest as Rocky Mount is home Wednesday night hosting SouthWest Edgecombe a team which they just played last Friday night.

I was able to confirm with coach Jeff Craddock of Tarboro that he and his coaches and some of his players will appear with me Sunday night on the Stretchlon Sports Show. This will be their third straight year to come on the SSS that Sunday night after the State Championship game. It has become a very good habit.

Tarboro Will Have Their hands Full With Carver

Saturday afternoon at 3.00pm the Vikings of Tarboro High School will go for their second straight championship in 2-A football. I think if they had their choice they would like to return to chapel Hill. Not only is it a shorter trip than Winston Salem but if it were in Chapel Hill they would not be facing Carver in their own back yard.

Winston Salem Carver Yellow Jackets are 13-2 but both of their losses occurred during their non-conference games. Tarboro is undefeated and in order for Carver to make it to Saturday's game they had to knock off undefeated Lincolnton.

Carver averages thirty six points a game, Tarboro thirty seven. The defenses - Carver gives up Sixteen which the Vikes give up thirteen. This seems to be a dead even match up.

Stability is a great thing. The sporting world is being able to keep players. High school sports you are unable to keep same players year after year but you need to work with the next age group coming on board. The stability is the coaching. Coleman Pitt Post 58 has had instability in the coaching area for several years now. They have a new coach just about every year.

Already as winter still is not yet upon us, Post 58 is is gearing up for the summer baseball season. This year they already know that Hank Jones will return next summer and try to carry Nash County back to the State Tournament for the third year in a row. Jones will be back as head coach for the second season.

Jones' life outside of the base field affords him the luxury to spend endless hours helping our youth become better baseball players. Part of that stability thing Jones will lead a baseball camp to be held at Nash Central High school on December 28-29th. It is open to any player in grades 6-12.

Hank Jones has lined up Billy Godwin of ECU, Pat Smith will get off the golf course long enough to teach pitching. Tony Guzzo, Neil Avent, and Billy Best will all teach interested parties interested in becoming better baseball players.

The cost of the camp is $75 if signed up by December 20th. All proceeds from this camp will help keep Legion baseball alive in Rocky Mount.

Getting back to that stability thing Joe Bell took over as the Athletic Director for the legion two years ago. Now that Hank is coming back for his second year as coach Legion, baseball has a foundation from two people who have taken money out of their own pockets as well as their time to see Legion baseball continue. American Legion Baseball is alive and well in Rocky Mount with both of them carrying the banner.

ACC Goes Bowling

Virginia Tech the ACC champion will play Stanford in the Orange Bowl on January third. The traditional 8.30 start for the Orange bowl. Losing their first two games of the season and one of those to James Madison the Hokies have rebounded and not lost since.

Florida State the losers in the ACC championship game get the Chick-fil-a Bowl in Atlanta on December thirty first at 7.30. They will play South Carolina who was passed over in the Sugar Bowl after having lost in the SEC championship game.

Boston College gets to play in the who wants to play in this bowl game better known as the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl being played in San Fransisco. Tom O'Brien left BC because the only Bowls games that BC got were the ones on blue fields or California. The reason of course is BC just doesn't have the fan base to sell 25,000 tickets to one of the southern bowl games. They will play Nevada. This game could be called the opening of the 2011 football season since it will not be played until January ninth 9.00pm

Ralph Frigden and Maryland will take on the Pirates of ECU. This is the Military Bowl being played in one of my favorite stadiums RFK in Washington. The way the Pirates score points Pirate fans will have an opportunity to bounce up and down if they sit in the lower level of the stadium. RFK is truly one stadium that when they say that place was really rocking, really does. Game time is December twenty ninth at 2.30pm.

Meineke Car Care Bowl in Charlotte will feature the Clemson Tigers as they take on South Florida. Game time is noon on December thirty first. I would suspect Clemson will fill the stadium if their fans are excited about going bowling. I don't know about this year whether they will be or not.

The Sun Bowl which most of the time is the coldest game of all the bowls will have Notre Dame and Miami. There are only two bowls games this entire bowl season not on ESPN and CBS which has carried this game for a zillion years will do it again. 2.00pm kickoff on December 31st.

North Carolina despite all that has gone on this year still has had a good season. They will be in the Music City Bowl in Nashville (TN) not (NC) on December 30th. They will meet the Vols of Tennessee in their own back yard. I would love to see both wear their dark uniforms with Tennessee in their orange and Carolina in the light blue.

The eighth bowl game for the ACC is the Champs Sports Bowl in Orlando. The Wolfpack will take on West Virginia. Game time is 6.30pm of December 29th. The last time the Pack played in Orlando Pittsburgh beat Philip Rivers and company in this same bowl by another name.

The ACC will get eight chances to improve their reputation which this year has taken a hit in both football and basketball.

Duke Playing Like #1

It is only December and we are still thirty games away from a national champion but you have to give it to Duke. They have already played more top ten and top twenty teams in the early season than most will play all year and have won them all.

They have changed the style of play from their point guard over last year now running and gunning. The rest of their player are suited for that style but they have the players who are just as capable of playing a half court game.

Isn't it funny but when the ball goes in the hole it gives everyone a different attitude about their play. Carolina got inside play yesterday in their victory over Kentucky. They still didn't make a basket the last 6.18 of the game. The good news there was Kentucky went nine minutes with our a bucket. They finally made one with 12 seconds left.

State came back from their embarrassment to Wisconsin and play about as well as they are coached. Down 61-59 Lowe called a time out with thirty two seconds on the time clock and after the time out the ball never crossed the three point line and State took a thirty five foot heave as the clock was running out. Nice play!

The season will progress and hopefully for Carolina their guard play will improve to where they figure out how to keep getting the ball inside. As for State I think yesterday this team is better with the freshman coming off the bench.

The ACC football champions are the Cobblers of Virginia Tech. It was a very entertaining game with Tech winning over Florida State 44-33. Now today the pieces will start falling into place about everyone's bowl games.

The Rocky Mount Gryphons have three nights of home games this week. It starts Tuesday. You know the Nash County Christmas tournament is in Rocky Mount this year and it is before Christmas. It is becoming a three day event. The first night the 20th will feature three games, the 21st two games and the 22nd will have three games. We will see how that works.

An invitation will go out Monday morning to Jeff Craddock and the Tarboro Vikings to join me next Sunday night live after their State Championship football game next Saturday on the "Stretchlon Sports Show". Seems as if this is becoming an annual event.

Tonight's show will feature Pam Gainey winning #300 Friday night.
