We all go through life doing things that seem stupid which bring on fears for your future. I am having those every day including Wednesday night when Hertford County played Rocky Mount.
I look forward every time we play the Bears because it is my old stomping grounds and I see someone at every game that I can talk with that brings back my past. Entering the gym the first person who I see is Scott Privette the Bears football coach who has a son on the HC jvs. We share a few moments with each other and I eventually found my way to the press table behind the score table at midcourt.
Charles Simmons the head basketball coach who has been at Hertford County since the 80's comes to the scoring table to check his lineup and afterwards looks my way so we can greet each other. The first thing out of my mouth is "Wayne how are you doing"? The older I get the less I remember names. Charles has long gone back to his seat on the bench when I realize that I called him Wayne.
I think I have a pretty good memory except for one thing and that is remembering names. Any time at work a salesman or anyone I might have a meeting with who I have never seen before, once they tell me their name I must keep their card in front of me in order to remember it. The rule where you are suppose to repeat peoples names out loud when you meet them for the first time doesn't work for me. I need to see you everyday for a month in order to remember it.
Is this the sign that Alzheimers is in it's first stages with me. I know Charles went back to Ahoskie Wednesday night thinking this guy has lost it.
Nick Cammarota who joined the Telegram way back during the Gryphons run to the state basketball title, I still have to think everytime I talk with him what is his name? Is it old Age creeping up on me? Is stupid is that stupid does?
As I go forward in life and run across you and and our conversation never mentions your name ther might be a reason. I am thinking as we talk who is this person. I know they have a name. I just can't remember it.

Hertford County #1 In Big East
If the Bears played in the Big East tonight they would sit a top of the standing after having beaten Nash Central and Rocky Mount on consecutive nights. Last night trailing late Hertford County beat the Bulldogs in Ahoskie and they follow that up downing the Gryphon in Rocky Mount.
This was a strange game Mike Gainey called time out thirty second into the game and took Kenyatta Bullock out of the game and sent him to the dressing room where he never returned. Donte Battle with his left elbow wrapped played in the first half and none in the second. The Gryphons made two shots all night from more than ten feet as this was a game of shoot and go get the rebound and Hertford County got their share of the boards.
Hertford County lead by 11 at the end of the first quarter and the Gryphons never lead even though they tied the game at 38-40-42 before Hertford County forges a four point lead in which the Gryphons never caught up.
Hertford County downs the Gryphons 62-56 giving the Gryphons two losses in a row and they head to conference play struggling to find someone to push the ball at the basketball where the Gryphons are good but the ball must get there first.
Dontez Tyler lead HC with 17 points and he was followed by Jordon Jones with 16. Tecoby Hines starting for Donte lead the Gryphons with 16 and Exzavier Cooper added 14.
Rocky Mount only had 12 turnovers but they could only force nine on Hertford County. Rocky Mount won the rebounding battle 33-30 with Cooper pulling down 10 boards.
The Lady Bears of Herford County are historically bad but the team that showed up in Rocky Mount tonight was one of the best girls teams I have ever seen from Ahoskie. Combine a Good Hertford County team and the fact the the Lady Gryphons played the first three quarters like they needed WD 40 to get going they had their hands full tonight.
Thank Goodness it is a four quarter game as Hertford County lead until early into the fourth quarter before the Lady Gryphons moving parts stopped sweaking and they win at home 59-50 over Hertford County.
Hertford County had no answer for Tia Hudgins in the fourth quarter as the Lady Gryphon defense took its toll on the Bears. Hudgins finished with 22 while J'Kyra Brown added 14 and Timisha Walker supplied ten points.
The Gryphons Host Nash Central Friday night as Big East conference play gets started. The Lady Gryphons will head in with a 12-2 record while the boys stumble in at 10-4

Goodwin Transfers from Carolina
The Daily Tar Heel reported Monday night that former Rocky Mount High school athlete Brian Goodwin has transferred from Carolina to Miami Dade community college in Miami Florida.
Goodwin who in the fall had been ruled ineligible to play for North Carolina’s Baseball team this spring can now play for Miami Dade this spring and weight his options after spring as to transferring back to a Division One school or applying for the major League Baseball draft.
Gryphon basketball begins the second season tonight after the Christmas break as they Host Hertford County. Both varsity squads beat HC in mid December in rather close games in Ahoskie. Friday night the conference play starts before the exam break hits. Winter sports program have a hard time getting momentum going with all the breaks taken for holidays and exams.
I don’t know how many people watched the Duke women last night with their game hosting Kentucky. The Duke women are ranked #3 in the latest women’s college basketball poll and now that U Conn's long winning streak is over all women’s team have optimism that it is no longer U Conn for the title and everyone else running for second.
Kentucky has never had a women’s team worth much except this year. Last night Duke started out the second half making only one of their first 18 shots. The game was tied at 48 with a minute to play and a Duke pass was deflected and bounced off the backboard into the goal to give Duke the lead that they would not give back as they win 53-48. Sometimes lady luck is better than talent.
This week begins in full force the college basketball conference schedule. There has been so much talk of how poor the ACC is this year that Carolina and State just might get top four positions by seasons end. Both still have major flaws but looking at everyone else except for Duke all the other ACC schools seems to be just as bad. Sidney Lowe had better get his best ACC finish ever this year or look for an NBA job. If he can’t win in this league as bad as it seems to be this year he never will in Raleigh.
I was on a personal mission of not watching the Sugar Bowl last night after what the NCAA has done with the Ohio State five players who were caught for the most part doing the same thing the Carolina football players who were not allowed to play this year for doing. Four of the five played significant roles in Ohio State's win over Arkansas last night of 31-26 victory.
It might be time for the BCS schools to break from the NCAA and form their own association. The NCAA is like our federal government and has gotten to large to protect those that it is supposed to serve. Especially when it ignores the rules that itself has created and does not apply justice in equal manner.
Like everything else money rules.

Panther Search
The tenure of John Fox as coach of the Carolina Panthers is over. Fox and the Panthers have had kind of an agreeable parting of the ways. Fox came to Carolina following a 1-15 season and turned them into a Super Bowl contender.
The Panther franchise has been going down hill ever since the five inteception game by Jake Delhomme and the expensive resigning of 17. Sometimes management decisions effect the product on the field more than the coach does and the Panthers stuck with Jake about three years too long.
Fox won more games than he lost while at Carolina and will land on his feet quickly whether as a head coach somewhere for another team floundering or as a defensive Coordinator. All Panther fans should give Fox a standing ovation as he took the Panthers to a Super Bowl in which they were tied with less than two minutes to play and just might have won it all if it weren't for a kickoff sailing out of bounds and Tom Brady having great field position.
Last night the ACC in prime time goes down hard again. Trailing 13-12 at the half the Hokies of Virginia Tech laid a second half goose egg while looking lost on defense against Andrew Luck who just might be the next Carolina Panther quarterback. Stanford beat the Gobblers 40-12.
The ACC is now 4-4 with one game to go this Bowl season with Boston College left to play sometime before the 4th of July. You know I can understand the BCS championship game being the last Monday after January 1st but college football lasting until the middle of winter has got to go. The ACC as far as wins and losses have been as good as anybody this bowl season but it seems the ACC continues to lose the Prime time games and in the long run the nation doesn't care about over all record just what you did in front of the world. How Bout Those Seahawks
The NFL for the first time in the history of the league will have a team with a losing record in the playoffs. The worse thing about this whole mess is as a division winner Seattle will host a playoff game Saturday against the New Orleans Saints. If the NFL is lucky Seattle will be the worse in and first out of the playoffs.
The prime time game for next Saturday night will feature Peyton Manning against the New York Jets. Yesterday I was switching back and forth in the fourth quarter between the Chargers and Indy games. Philip River beat Peyton Manning for the NFL passing title by eight yards. Rivers finished with 4710 and Manning 4702. Rivers passed both Manning and Drew Brees on the last day to win title.
The Sunday games next week will start with the Baltimore Ravens traveling to the Kansas City Chiefs. I will say the final score of that game will be 13-10 as there will not be much scoring in that one. The final game of the Wild Card Weekend will have Green Bay going to Philadelphia.
Today is the anniversary of the longest run in NFL history. Tony Dorsett ran 99 yards on a dive play up the middle. The play was set up when Timmy Newsome from Ahoskie who fumbled a kickoff at the four yard line and rolled out of bounds at the one. Newsome to make up for his fumble did a pancake block as the fullback on the next play to spring Dorsett for the historic run.
Duke began conference play in ACC basketball last night winning by 11 in Cameron. If this is any indication Duke will not go undefeated in conference play. Carolina smashed St Francis in non conference action.
Tonight is the Orange Bowl from Miami. Virginia Tech is the last ACC team left in this bowl season and if they win the ACC will have a 5-3 mark in bowl games. Stanford will not go down easy tonight for the Hokies. This will probably be the last game for Stanford's coach Jim Harbaugh. With the beating Michigan took in their bowl game I suspect Harbaugh will be heading back to Michigan just as soon as Michigan fires Rich Rodriquez. Don't be surprise if that doesn't happen by say Wednesday.

Last Day Of NFL Regular season
Only a couple of spots available today for some in the NFL. Indy can clinch a playoff spot by winning and Jacksonville must win and hope Indy loses.
Green Bay and the New York Giants must win and hope. One will probably not make it even if they both win. I hope today is the last day we have to worry about Brett Farve. To put it bluntly he is over the hill and ready for the senior citizen ward. Hope we don't hear from him again until his hall of fame induction year. That is of course if he retires.
N C State got Tracy Smith back yesterday and he played well in a Wolfpack victory. If the Pack is to make a step toward improvement Smith and Leslie have to play well together and including yesterday and the two games Smith played before his injury it has not happened.
School starts again Monday and basketball returns for the Gryphons Wednesday and Friday. Hertford County is here Wednesday for a non-conference tilt while Friday starts the first round of conference play and Nash Central will be in the house. The Gryphons will be without starting freshman Donte Battle this week for sure as he was injured in practice last week.

I talked with Terrell during the holiday Tournament and he actually got a stress fracture of his leg during the State Championship game in March. Happy New Year
The new year is always the time of making promises to yourself which are never kept. We promise ourselves we will do better but by February we are back to the same old habits. There are times we wish others to have a better new year and I have a wish for the NCAA. Let's throw away the rule book and start all over.
Cheating is cheating and if you are found to have cheated let's let the punishment start now. Case in point five Ohio State players caught with their hand in the cookie jar just like the Carolina players and yet all five can play in their Bowl Game and serve their punishment next season. How many of those five will ever come back and play next year since all are NFL draft eligible.
I want everyone to know that I am not stupid enough to think all of these extra benefits are isolated episodes. Sports agents to boosters with a handshake and a twenty are always going to happen even if they did away with scholarships.
Kansas State lost their bowl game when a player broke a rule after a touchdown and saluted the crowd. That is a penalty and I support after every play hand the ball to the official. How many times just last night did I see a defensive player make a tackle and they take off and run to get away from the crowd to let everyone see that it was me who made that play? Isn't that drawing attention to yourself like the rule says?
Television has made sports into we will give you a lot of money if you play your game at midnight instead of 2.00pm as planned. Today is New Year's day and it is the official last day of college football but TV has added ten more days and everyone makes more money.
