I Can't Get Into Fantasy

I have a real hard time even thinking about joining a fantasy league.  Football whether it's college or Pro is perfect where you have all week to think about your picks.  I have never been in a fantasy league and hope I never will.

First off I want to concentrate on my favorite teams. College that would be N C State and in the Pro's San Diego and the Panthers.  I can tell you if Philip Rivers was not on the Chargers I would be wrapped up as an Panther fan.  Having grown up in Eastern North Carolina  if the Panthers didn't exist I would be gung ho Redskins.

Living in Ahoskie back in the 60's we got the Redskins every Sunday at 1.00pm on the Norfolk station  and another Norfolk station carried the Colts at 2.00pm.  I would watch all the Skins games and catch Johnny Unitas lead the Colts to a come back in the 4th quarter.  I grew up on Sonny Jergenson and Johnny Unitus.  I guess I'm just and old timer and would have too hard a time pulling for a wide receiver to score a touchdown against the Chargers or Panthers just so I could win a fantasy game.

Well let's see if we can figure out the high school football schedule this weekend and beyond.  Tarboro High school is in such a mess that their game with Northern Nash has been moved to September 23rd.  Tonight Southern Nash host Bunn.  A game that will have every one's attention is the SouthWest Edgecombe at Hunt game.  This will let everyone see how close Hunt and Southern Nash are as the Firebirds hosted SWE just  a couple of weeks ago. Nash Central will host Roanoke Rapids Saturday night and Rocky Mount travels to Hertford County.

Irene Hang Over

I told you yesterday that Facebook was talking of no Gryphon football on Friday night and that information was correct.  If there is no football Friday what do you do?  Play Saturday, Monday during a holiday or cancel all together with Hertford County.

The growth of a football team can only go forward playing and learning from your mistakes.  Just like the tie with Bertie winning or losing is not the ultimate goal when you play a non conference game.  Trying to become a better football team is.  Faced with no practice until Thursday  the best solution for Hertford County and Rocky Mount is to play football on Saturday night.  Nash County is back in school today and that gives Dickie Schock two days to review the Bertie game and prepared for Hertford County.  Game time is 7.00pm Saturday at Bears Staduim in Ahoskie.

Gryphon Fact: After starting three straight games on the road the Gryphons will play their first home game next week against Rose High School.  Considering that the Gryphons lost their last game of the season  in 2009  playoff lost at South Johnston and then played seven of eleven on the road last year they have only had four home games in their last 15 games.

The college football season kicks off tonight as Wake Forest and Syracuse gets the season rolling.  Sorry but there is no TV for this one which really makes me want to ask why play on Thursday night if TV is not there?  ESPN 3 will cover the game so it is watchable on your computer.

The most interesting game of the weekend locally is Duke hosting Richmond.  There is sentiment in Durham that the Blue Devils are going bowling this year and in order to do that they need this game for the count to become Bowl eligible.  The last time these two played Richmond won.  I think Duke is improved but where are they going to win enough to get into a bowl game?

Biggest question in Chapel Hill is this  the first game of the last season in Chapel Hill for Everette Withers or is this the first game of a long head coaching career in Chapel Hill?  I think the Heels had better win this one  because the NCAA is heading to town soon to announce the penalties and just maybe take away wins in 08-09-10?  Remember James Madison beat Virginia Tech last year.

East Carolina had about the worse defense in the nation last year and to see whether they are any better this year they travel to Charlotte to play South Carolina.  The old ball coach Steve Spurrier  just may have his best team yet since he has been in the chicken pen.  I have a feeling this will be a high scoring affair.

The coach with the most reputation on the line is Tom O'Brien and N C State begins the Mike Glennon era with Liberty.  You know after every game this year everyone will turn to see what Wisconsin has done just to see what Russell Wilson has done.  You know this situation might be a lot like when San Diego got rid of Drew Brees to start Philip Rivers.  I think that has worked out well for both teams.

Friday Night Football In Jeopardy

I am seeing on Facebook and Twitter from Gryphon football players that Friday night's football game with Hertford County has been cancelled.  Nash County schools are out for another day today and I am not sure Thursday will be a school day either.  Just as soon as I can find out whether this game is off or postponed I'll let you know.

It's getting down to the end of the New York Penn League season and Nash Central's Xavier Macklin batting average is hovering around 232.  His playing time has gone down since his batting average has been sliding. Expect him in winter ball in Florida.

I see on the Washington Redskins website that Shaun Draughn is still a Redskin.  He also has a number change  to #38.  I would think that is a good sign for Shaun  as I can see no reason to change his number and then cut him.

.  Finally we can get to see something on the sports on TV that is not related to and NCAA investigation.  Thursday night starts the 2011 college football season.  The folks in Chapel Hill should thank their lucky stars for the Miami Hurricanes.  Miami has wiped all of Carolina investigation clean off the news.  Just about everyone of our division one teams in our area play before the weekend is over.

Most folks would tell you that the Southeastern conference is the conference that would cheat at all cost.  It is easy to point to the Cam Newton investigation at Auburn as Auburn has a national championship under it's belt and now waits on any sanctions by the NCAA.  There is one thing the Southeastern conference does better than the ACC.  When they cheat they win.  Georgia Tech, Carolina  and Miami have no trophies to show for any of the sanctions heading their way.
