Big East Baseball Strong As Ever

Northern Nash tonight took the #1 seed from the Cape Fear Valley to the wire before they lose in Sanford by a 4-3 score. The top three seeds advance including Nash Central who out scored Jacksonville to win 11-10.  Nash Central gets to play the in the right place at the right time roll as their next opponent will be North Lenoir a #4 seed from Eastern Carolina Conference who upset the #2 seed West Brunswick.  Nash Central as a #3 seed will host North Lenoir Tuesday night in the Dog Pound.

The top two Big East teams Hunt and Rocky Mount advanced as between them they gave up one run in their two games.  Hunt who is by far the best hitting team in the Big East rolled over Washington 13-1.  They now will play Eastern Wayne the #2 seed from the Eastern Carolina Conference at Hunt.  Rocky Mount meets C B Aycock who won 10-4 to earn the right to host Rocky Mount.

The Southern Nash Doubles team of Owen Fike and Adam Glover are still alive as they won two matches today and are now in the final four in the State 3-A doubles tennis going on in Burlington.  Their team mates Tim Lewandowski and Armondo Villareal won their opening match but fell in three set in the second round to knock them out of the tournament.  The doubles team from Northern Nash Bryson Williams and Jonah Richardson lost in the round of 16.

The singles the Big East only had two to make the top sixteen and both made it to the final eight before finding  the exit.  Turner Votipka won his opening match  but lost in the final eight and Fike's Nick James did the same losing in the final eight.

The 3-A track and field championships are over and at this point Rocky Mount finished 15th.  I will try to give more details on all the Nash County schools Saturday.

Gryphons Use Moss' Coat Tails

Sorry for any delay cause by the G-mail server going down.  I did not know there was a problem until last night when I went on line to blog the game and could not get on.  The post I made on Wednesday has been lost but this was just not my problem but anyone on G-mail.

Any one who I have talked with since we found out RM was playing Hertford County knows I am concerned over the number of runs that this Gryphon team can score against good pitching.  I made the prediction that 4-0 or 4-1 was going to be the final score.  When you can't score ten runs the other team stays in the game much like in college basketball games when you only score 50 every night.  It is hard to run away and hide when the score is close.

Hertford County sent their Ace Brandon Warren who is heading to Barton to the mound at Gryphon Stadium and Warren held the Gryphons to four hits.  Lucky for the Gryphons that the best pitcher in the history of this area was on the mound in Benton Moss.  Moss struck out 19 allowed four hits and walked two batters and the Gryphons chipped in a couple of errors and Hertford County had runners on base they just could not make contact with the ball when they really needed it.  It was the 31st time Moss has been the winner while losing only 3 times in his four  varsity season which makes him the winningest pitch ever in this area.

Rocky Mount got on the board in the first when Jeremy Johnson struck out but reached first on a passed ball. Cameron Ramsey reach on an error and Benton Moss stroked a single to drive in the first run of the game.

The game stayed 1-0 until the fifth when Thomas Berry and Benton Moss singled both stole a base a piece and reach home on a error by the second baseman fielding a hit ball.  Andy Morris  drove in run #4 in the sixth to give the Gryphons plenty of cushion which was not needed with Moss on the hill.

Benton Moss collected two hits and Thomas Berry and Andy Morris the other two.  Brandon Warren took the loss for the Bears.

Rocky Mount wins their 17th on the season and now head to C B Aycock Tuesday night in the second round.

I will blog again later tonight to give the track and field results which are on going now.

Playoffs In Full Swing

Tuesday Night started the 3-A playoffs in  girls soccer and the Big East one and two had no problem in their opening round.  # 1 Hunt disposed of Havelock 4-1 while #2 Fike whipped Hertford County 8-0.  The Lady Gryphons who have been bitten by illness and injury all year traveled to Jacksonville White Oak to take it on the chin 8-2.  Northern Nash plays tonight at Union Pines.

The state singles and doubles championships are this weekend and the Big East and Nash County will be well represented.  Singles Turner Votipka of Nash Central will be in action against Kyle Johnson of Charlotte Catholic. Fike's Nick James will take on Paul Hogan of Hibriten.

Three doubles team from the Big East have made it to final 16.  Southern Nash has two doubles in action in Owen Fike-Adam Glover and they will be pitted against a team from Asheville.  Tim Lewandowski and Armondo Villareal of Southern take on a team from Forest view.  Northern Nash will be sending the duo of Bryson Williams and Jonah Richardson to meet a second team from Asheville.

Friday is the Track championships at NCA&T and several athletes and team events the three Nash County schools all have shots at winning different events both boys and girls with Rocky Mount and Nash Central boys all hoping for top five  in team scores.  In order for any team to make the top five you almost have to have a perfect day and get points in every event that you have an athlete or team qualified in.

Baseball playoffs begin for some Thursday night:  Rocky Mount the #2 from the Big East entertains Hertford County the #2 from the Northerasten/Coastal .  The winner of that game is paired for the next round with C B Aycock/West Carteret  Winner.  The RM/HC winner would travel to C B Aycock and they would host West Carteret should they upset Aycock next week.

Big East #1 Hunt host Washington who is the #5 from the Coastal.  Nash Central the Big East #3 travels  to Jacksonville who is the #2 from the Coastal.  Northern  Nash as the #4 from the Big East hits the road as they visit Southern Lee the #1 from the Cape Fear Valley.

The One Voice talent Show which  was put off a couple of weeks ago when Nash County Schools got out early one day due to tornado warnings will be held Friday night at the RMHS Auditorium.  It begins at 7.00pm and the $5 admission will go  to the Pediatric and Oncology Department at UNC Hospitals.  Gryphon Soccer player Holley Fryer spent time there last summer under going treatments and the show will be in her honor.
