Semi-Finals Are set

Tonight the boys conference champion Nash Central has a tough task in defeating the #4 seed in the conference Southwest Edgecombe on SWE home court.

Rocky Mount hoping to improved their playoff location chances could tonight improve those chances a lot if they can beat #2 Fike at 7.30 at SWE. The higher conference seeding you have allows you a higher seeding in the state playoffs and home games are critical. if they can get a #2 conference seeding they would get at least one game. The only way the Gryphons get the #2 seed is win the tournament

Last night Southern Nash defeated Nash Central girls and Southern Nash now get the #1 seeded lady Gryphons at 6.00pm Thursday. In the second semi final the home standing lady Cougars of SWE collide with Fike. The winners play at 6.00pm Friday in the championship game.

The total number of Gryphon football players who will play in college increased to six recently with the NEW-6 Defensive player of the year Chris Pittman signing with UNC-Pembroke. Jermaine Fields has signed on to play at Elizabeth City State University.

They join Nich Hahula(UNC Central),Whit Barnes(Wake Forest), Keith Stickland (ECSU), and Nick Harrison (UNC-Penbroke) who have already signed on the solid line to play football next year.

Wrestling Coach Jermaine(JJ) Jones had to split practice time with football in November and most of December getting his wrestling team going. His fruits have paid off for six wrestlers who will be competing this weekend in Winston Salem for individual State championships.

If any of the six win in their weight class and become state champions their name will go up on the gym wall honoring all gryphon state Champions.

The six looking for championships this weekend are: Admir Scott 112 pound, Francisco Alfaro 130 pounds,Chandler phillips 135 pounds, J K Williams 160 pounds,Dedrick Silver 171, and Guy Williamson 215 pounds.

If J K williamson should win he would become the first ever Gryphon freshman to win a state wrestling title.

Good luck to all Friday and Saturday.

Finally today as I have told you in the past my Cousin Lauren Doughtie who is a senoir on the N C State women's golf team is off to an excellent Senior spring. Back in November I told you she had hurt her wrist and might need surgery but rest cured the problem over the winter.

The first two tournaments of the spring she has finished 4th and 7th. After graduation Lauren plans on qualifying for the US Women's open and afterwards turn pro. She has already qualified to join the futures tour this summer. Depending on the job situation I might be available to caddie for her.
