Midnight

Scott Boros is the agent for the top three draft choices of the Washington Nationals.  Whenever Boros has negotiated with the Nationals in the past none of his players have signed until the last minute. All three of the top prospects for the Washington Nationals have Scott Boros as their agent including Brian Goodwin of Rocky Mount High.

Part of Brian Goodwin's negotiated ploy was to send his letter of intent to the University of South Carolina as if he was going to go play college baseball in Columbia.  Midnight Monday night was the deadline either sign or wait to next year's draft. Once again Scott Boros works his bags of tricks as all three of his clients sign just before the strike of midnight.

According to the Washington Nationals Website Goodwin signed for a package in the range of three million dollars which all the rumors I had been hearing all summer was what he was asking for all along.  Rocky Mount Gryphon Brian Goodwin is a pro baseball player.

The New York Penn Rookie League is going down the stretch and Nash Central's Xavier Macklin is mired in his first slump of his pro career.  X is down to 229 in thirty nine games played but he has only maybe three hits in his last 39 at bats.  I suspect Xavier will head to Florida in the fall to play winter ball.

I told you last night about the Renegades the travel league team from Rocky Mount that is in Cooperstown New York this week playing in a 13 and under tournament.  This morning they lost their first game 10-2 which makes them 2-1 in the tournament.  Their second game scheduled for  4.30 Monday is in a weather delay.  In fact the entire tournament is behind schedule because of rains for most of the day Monday.

I told you yesterday they are in a tournament with 98 teams and a champion has to be crowned sometime Saturday because come Sunday another 98 teams will be in town playing another tournament.  Since they have to stay on schedule as much as possible it looks like they will not play before midnight.  Even as I write this I am told that has been pushed to 2 am.  I can assure you I will let you know how they do in that early morning game tomorrow.

Today is the first day that high schools can start their fall sports programs.  Rocky Mount girls tennis travels to Edenton while volleyball host South Central.  Talk about jumping right in the fire but Rocky Mount volleyball has never beaten South Central.
