Big East Tournament Seeds Set

The 2013 Big East Basketball Tournament starts Monday night at Hunt High School in Wilson.  Monday belongs to the boys and Tuesday the girls get their first taste of the 2013 Playoffs.  Hunt drew the #1 seed on the boys side leaving Rocky Mount as the #2 seed.  The seeding for the state playoff will rest on which of those two schools either wins the Tournament or goes further in the tournament than the other.

Monday will begin at 6PM with the 4/5 game featuring Northern Nash and Southern Nash.  Northern won both encounters during the regular season.  The 7:30 game is #3 Nash Central and #6 Fike.  The 4/5 winner plays Hunt at 6PM Wednesday in the semi's while the 3/6 Winner will have Rocky Mount on the radar.

Tuesday begins with the 4/5 girls game which will be Hunt/ Fike and the 7:30 game is the 3/6 match up of Rocky Mount against Southern Nash. Southern is on a two game conference winning streak and Rocky Mount was a victim in one of those two games. Thursday night's semi final action will send the top seed and undefeated Lady Knights Of Northern Nash to meet the 4/5 winner and Nash Central will hook up against the 3/6 winner.

Friday night is the championship in both tournaments with the girls taking the floor at six followed by the surviving boys game.  WHIG-TV has plans to tape both of the championship games and I will be doing the girls game while Wes Bradshaw will cover the boys.  Whatever the outcome of the tournament will determine how the brackets will unfold in the state playoffs as next Saturday night at 6pm we should know where all four of the top four teams from the Big East will play and where.

The boys top fours seeds are Hunt, Rocky Mount, Nash Central and Northern Nash.  The girls are Northern Nash, Nash Central, Rocky Mount and Hunt.  The only way these four seeds in both boys and girls don't make the playoffs is if a five or six seed pulls off the major upset and wins the tournament knocking the fourth  seed out.  So Northern's boys and since there is a three way tie for second among the girls Nash Central, Rocky Mount and Hunt one of those could get knocked out if either Southern Nash or Fike win the tournament.

This years playoffs will be seeded by over all which means  the Big East winner could be any  where from 1-5 seed with every conference champion, Then the #2 seeds and depending on whether you  are a top eight seed in the seeding process  the #2 might not even get  a home game and yes there is a chance that  a #4 from Big East could be matched with #1 in the first game.  It will totally be where you are in the seedings.

We hope it doesn't come down to the way if fell out last year with Rocky Mount girls and Northern Nash girls meeting in the sectional finals.  Should any Big East teams make it to the sectional finals we hope they are in different sectionals and would not meet until the Regional.  Four weeks from today their will be state championship day for high school basketball.
