Gryphons Win At Southern

If there was ever a trap game tonight was it for the Rocky Mount Gryphons.  They have not played a game in two weeks, the two biggest games of the year are up and coming Thursday and Saturday so it could be real easy to forget about Southern Nash the only team left in the Big East that can not make the playoffs.

Tonight at Firebird Country the Gryphons have taken care of business and beaten Southern Nash by a score of 13-1 in five innings.  The question of when is Benton Moss going to pitch this week was answered as Jeremy Johnson started for the Gryphons and pitched the first three innings and gets credit for the win.  Freshman Sam Lilley pitched the last two.

Northern Nash on the road as well beat Fike by a 13-3.  Rocky Mount is now 5-2 in conference play while Northern is 5-3.  They meet Thursday night at Gryphon Stadium with second place on the line.  If the Gryphons win they would be 6-2 and Knights 5-4 and would only need one win in their two remaining games to clinch second. A Northern victory they would be 6-3 and RM 5-3.  If Northern wins that would give them any tie breaker over Rocky Mount since they would have swept the Gryphons this season.  The only way RM could finish second then would be beat NN by one game in the standings.

We understand that Hunt has beaten Nash Central  6-3 so Hunt is now 8-0 and Nash Central has fallen to 3-4.  Nash Central still has three games to play and all they need to clinch a playoff spot is one win.  They Play Southern Nash Thursday and Fike Friday and Finish up Monday with Northern Nash.

Hunt's victory tonight Eliminates Northern Nash from being able to win first place.  Rocky Mount is the only team left that can steal the first place away from Hunt, but if Hunt beats Fike Thursday they are the regular season champs

Up to the minute the Big East standings  Hunt 8-0-RM 5-2-NN 5-3-NC 3-4-Fike 1-6 and SN 1-8

Today started the NCHSAA 3-A Mens Tennis Duels or in other words the team competition.  The Big East gets only two teams in and they both dominate their matches.

Southern Nash the Big East #1 beat Williams High School of Burlington they were the #2 in the Mid State. The Firebirds win 6-0.  Fike at #2 in the Big East traveled to Currituck High school and if you are going to drive three hours you might as well make it a worth while trip and they did winning 9-0 over the #1 seed from the Northeastern/Coastal conference.
