Lady Gryphons Win Bracket Boys Fall

It happens all the time varsity sports teams playing their game at one location while another plays somewhere else.  Today however is the first time that both varsity basketball teams took to the court at the same time as far  I know.  The Lady Gryphons were in Cary trying to win the 4-Team Girls bracket plying the host school Cary Academy while the boys were ten miles away playing their opening round game at Broughton High school in the Shavik Randolph Boys Bracket against the host school  the Caps of Broughton.

The Gryphon boys struggle the entire game trying to make outside shots and the Caps of Broughton  took advantage in the third quarter to secure a victory over the Gryphons in Broughtons Home gym 68-56.  Down 25-28 at the half Broughton extended the lead in the third and and held a double digit lead throughout the fourth quarter.

Rocky Mount falls to 7-2 on the season and must  return to Broughton Wednesday morning at 11AM to play Clayton who fell earlier in the day to Chapel Hill 64-42.  I told you a month a go or so that I didn't know what Rocky Mount's record might be by the first of the year but this team is developing nicely.  Today they failed to make enough from the outside to support Terrill Hilliard who lead the way with 25.

Found out yesterday that M J Gainey is done for the year on the basketball court as he has a knee injury in the South Central game a couple of weeks ago.  M J got off to a very good start being one of those pieces that fit into place that makes a special team.  This will mean more playing time for others who will have to not only have to fill the time but become a piece to the puzzle.  Depending on recovery time the all area tight end in football will have to hurry to make it back by the start of football season.
