When you have a child that is a senior in high school and she is the manager of the volleyball team you wind up going to the games to support her efforts as she keeps score of the games. Thursday night I witnessed with about another 100 people maybe the best volley ball game that I have ever seen. I admit I haven't seen all that many but this one will have to go on my top ten best games that I have ever witnessed.
Rocky Mount traveled to Hunt to take on a Hunt squad who found themselves desperate to win after losing Tuesday to Northern Nash. Hunt has been Rocky Mount's biggest pain in the butt the last two years for Tab Wilcox and the Lady Gryphons. Wilcox's first two seasons at Rocky Mount has gone unbeaten in the regular season only to lose to Hunt both years in the Conference tournament.
Northern Nash disposed of Southern Nash Thursday 3-0 and waited to sit back and see if they would sit a top the conference by themselves by dark. Hunt opened the first game and clipped RM 25-13 in a game that Rocky Mount could not get enough serves across the net. Game two Rocky Mount charged back to tie at one game a piece winning 25-14 Game three Hunt dominated like the first set and won 25-14.
Tab Wilcox and the Lady Gryphons are faced with their first loss with Wilcox as the Gryphon coach in conference play going on three years. Late in game four Rocky Mount spurted to the lead to win the game 25-18 to set up the fifth game tiebreaker.
Game five RM jumped to a 3-0 lead only to see Hunt tie the game at 4 all. From that point on everyone in the place needed first aid in a hot gym and the agony that everyone there would have to endure. Tied at 13-13 with one team needing to win by two Rocky Mount got that shot leading 14-13 only to see Hunt escape on a point RM was sure they would win.
The score was tied at every point 15-15,16-16, 17-17, 18-18, 19-19, 20-20, 21-21, 22-22, 23-23, 24-24, 25-25, 26-26, 27-27, 28-28, 29-29, 30-30. Both sides traded chances to win at any time. 34 points were scored without one side or the other leading by two. Whether they were players coaches or fans this one was knocking ten minutes off our lives at every point. Finally a Hunt kill at the net went long and Rocky Mount finally took advantage to win their third point in a row the first time that had happened since 13-13. Rocky Mount 32- Hunt 30.
Regardless of which side you were cheering for both sides gave a tremendous effort. Both sides had several chances to win on their serves but some how the other side survived. You know you have seen a great one when it is over and all the fans for both sides give all the players a standing ovation.
Rocky Mount prevails 32-30. Hunt won the serving part of the game but Hunt had no answer for Tia Hudgins when she was at the net. Both sides won points on sheer hustle and then on others silly mistakes. Quite frankly I am wore out.
Tennis also played at Hunt today and they were able to win 6-3 but the final score was not determined until dark.
Time for Friday night football.
Tarboro is on the road at North Edgecombe and a real quirk in the schedule. Tarboro's Hurricane rain game with Northern Nash which got postponed until the 23rd puts Tarboro on the road for the first four games this year.
Fike is home to Jacksonville Northside. Hunt travels to take on cross county rival Beddingfield. South Central travels to Northern as the Knights get back into action after a week off. Southern Nash travels to Roanoke Rapids. Nash Central heads to Ahoskie to meet Hertford County. SouthWest Edgecombe travels to Rocky Mount.
I am scheduled to do TV for WHIG-TV tonight that is of course if I had recovered from that Volley Ball game by then. Where are my pills?.
