Rocky Mount who finished with a 22-3 record swept all three awards as Collins Cuthrell won the hitter of the year. The senior can be seen in action Monday night as Cuthrell and Post 58 American Legion team open the Legion playoffs at home against New Bern at 7.00pm at Gryphon Stadium.
Team mate Benton Moss won the pitcher of the year and there is no doubt then even Moss may have been the best pitcher in the state this season. Good news for the Gryphons Moss is only a junior and has one more season to play Gryphon Baseball and possible become the all time winningest pitcher in Gryphon history.
Kent Cox was named coach of the year. Sunset Avenue Baptist Church is where I go to church. I Usher at our 8.30 am service every Sunday Morning. Kent is a member of Sunset also and where did I find the coach of the year this morning on the day he was named coach of the year? He was in the nursery helping wife Emily take care of the babies and toddlers during church.
Maybe the best softball pitcher from this area in quite a while Ashley Bone of Nash Central was named pitcher of year in softball. Ashley will still play softball next year at Carolina. Team mate Tiffany Macklin was named softball hitter of the year. Macklin will join brother Xavier at North Carolina A&T but Tiffany will continue to play softball.
Michael Brackett of Northern Nash was named tennis player of the year. He made it all the way to the state tournament. He still has two years to get better in high school before college.
Nash Central's Nathan Johnson was named golfer of the year. Johnson play earn him a spot in the state tournament this spring.
Girls track was won by Zikeena Parker of Rocky Mount. Parker is only a junior so she has more time to grow and get faster for next year. Nash Central's Will Bass was boy's track player of the year. His specialty was the mile and Will figured out something that most of us never do. He understood that every time he ran he needed to beat his personal best record and not worry what position he was in a race. If you beat your best then you have achieved. will is only a junior.
Finally but not the least in the player of the year honors Rocky Mount's Sydney Browder won as a freshman in soccer. Sydney lead the charge by Rocky Mount to dethrone Fike as queen of soccer in our area. Sydney was able to ease in with her older team mates and became one of the leaders on the team.
