They Grow Them Tall In Pitt County

Rocky Mount Volleyball has been very successful throughout the tenure that volleyball has been an athletic sport at RMHS. While the Lady Gryphons were in the Big East 4-A they always had trouble with Conley and Rose. They grow them lean and tall in Pitt county and for some reason Rocky Mount girls only get to about five feet nine.

Today Tab Wilcox loaded up the bus this morning and traveled to South Central High school to take part in the second annual South Central Breast Cancer event. Last year the Lady Gryphons were pounded by South Central and New Bern both tall and Lean teams. As the bus left the gym there was only eight players on the bus. Five Stay stayed behind for various reasons including three of the top players.

The tournament has expanded this year to include eight teams and the Lady Gryphons were carted off to the small gym where their first match was against Farmville Central. Like the Gryphons Farmville was unbeaten in their conference this year and being from Pitt County Farmville has three girls over six feet tall.

The first three games were 25-23 with Farmville winning two of them and in the fourth game Farmville won 25-18. The play of the year occurred in game two which was a winning game for Rocky Mount as after two hits the ball was headed out of bounds and at least ten feet beyond the back line and Evie Hunter chased the ball down and somehow hit the ball back over the net and before the rally ended Rocky Mount won the point.

Rocky Mount was scheduled to Meet New Bern but New Bern pulled out of the Tournament and North Pitt took their place, of course another Pitt County school and they had a couple of girls over six feet but they were not quite as athletic as Farmville's girls. The Lady Gryphons won three straight games 26-24, 25-21 and 25-18.

Sydney Browder, Evie Hunter, Sakeya Battle, Kasey Cooke, Precious White, Kushunn Seabreeze, Samantha Westphal and Emily Jacob all played their hearts out in both matches to get a split on the day.

The #1 seed in the Big East Rocky Mount will meet the winner of the Northern Nash-Nash Central winner Tuesday night at 5.00pm at Hunt High School in the semi finals of the Big East Tournament.

How about those Lady Gryphon tennis players they finished the regular season at 11-6 and 6-4 in the conference. This was suppose to be a rebuilding year an Barry Nettercutt has done a fine job with this years squad.

I like to say GET WELL Soon to a Northern Nash Friend Randy Langley the PA man at Northern football games. Randy is at Wake Med after suffering a heart attack Friday. He was not there last night to pull the Knights through against Hunt.
