Rest Time For Most

Southern Nash and Tarboro high light this week's Big East schedule as both have taken a week off earlier in order to meet up this week.   First of all I don't like the 11 game regular season. With the week off everyone takes along the way it takes 12 weeks to complete the regular season and then for the really great teams five weeks of playoffs.  I would love to see football over by the end of November all other fall sports do it why can't football?  Let us look at the preseason picks and where they could finish up.

I picked Southern Nash as the preseason number one and they stand 5-0.  I am concerned that all their injuries that they can not live up to their potential without at least one A number one back.  They are getting the job done with defenders and jv's running the ball and none are all star level runners.

Picked Northern Nash second and the reason was Northern always has talent but having a captain to guide the ship has been missing.  They have that captain in Randy Raper and you can see his influence taking hold more every day.

I picked Hunt third and after watching them this past Friday I think third is about right.  Any team that relies on power running needs a break a way back and they don't have one.  Also they don't have a quarterback that can get them eight yards with  a throw and they don't have that either.  They do have a solid defense and will be hard to score  lots of points on.

I picked Rocky Mount fourth but if you remember I said 2-3-4 could all switch as the season unfurls.  Look ok,Jason Battle is 13-4 as the head man of the Gryphons and when he has had to doesn't mind putting the ball in the air when the running game stalls.  The last two weeks they have been able to win when the running game sputtered.

I picked Nash Central fifth and they are heading that way fast.  Simply they can not move the ball to help a halfway decent defense.

After picking Fike for last they look like my big embarrassment of the season!  Still their schedule is questionable so I am still not sure they are as good as their 6-0 record.

There are several teams that need two weeks to heal up before the conference rush.  The team that uses the next two weeks the best will win the Big East this year.

We The Society Of Right Now

It can't be worth any thing if I can't  have it right now and what I want to know is who is the best football team, offense or player and when you give me your answer I will assume your answer will be correct for ever.

All the world is  so impressed with the wide open let's run as many plays as we can in a game cause if we run 100 plays we will win.  There is only one problem with the hurry up offense is that all that hurry up offense and ran ten plays and punted in two minutes puts their defense right back on the field and a tired defense can't stop anybody.

The  Philadelphia Eagles were the NFL rage for one half with their hurry up offense but by halftime the sorry Redskins had figured out how to stop them.  There is a few things that are basic in football.  Run fast, tackle and hold on to the ball.  The main purpose of holding on to the football is the longer you hold it the less likely the other team scores.

The NFL a league where the worse team is only six points in any game from winning they have seen everything there is to see and if they haven't a little film study will solve that.   Colleges where the top teams are still better than the average Joe's hurry up works when they play out manned team, in fact any offense beats those teams.

These wide open offenses will not last in the NFL because they require running QB's but when you look around show me one run and gun quarter back that has lasted all 16 games of the NFL season.
We the people who love bright shiny toys  fell for this gimmick offense.  If you look right now heading into week three the top two qb's are those old timey drop back in the pocket guys Peyton Manning and Philip Rivers

There are many things invented everyday that can change the world over night.  The reason they change the world is they come up with an idea that nobody else thought of.  In the world of football until someone comes up with an  idea where you  don't run and tackle the game will always be basic. The team that runs the fastest tackles better and holds on the the ball will win 99 per cent of the time.

Oh What A Night

This Summer I committed two Friday nights this fall to high school football.  I was at  Beddingfield for WHIG-TV covering Hunt at Beddingfield.  It was
also the first conference game of the year for Campbell volleyball as they traveled to High Point.  Campbell has a 15 game conference Losing streak dating back to the last conference game in 2011 and all 14 games last season.  Tonight in five  sets Campbell  is in first place in the Big South as they beat  High Point 15-10. So far  season Campbell has won all six of their five set matches and stand 10-7 on the season.

Unbeaten Triton travel to Rocky Mount and a barn burner  as Rocky Mount's early fumble gave Triton an early 7-0 lead.  Rocky Mount two plays tie the score on a Smith to Kearney 40 yard pass. smith and Kearney teamed up in the second quarter to give the Gryphons a 14-7 lead but Triton  got an 81 Yard run on a reverse to tie.  Micah Varnell gave the Gryphons a  17-14 halftime lead.

Neither side scored  in the third quarter but with 8:17 to play Triton scored to take the lead  21-17.   Triton who tried on side kicks all night made one work and had the ball but the gryphons held for one last shot.  The Gryphons score on a read option with under three minutes to play. Triton Fumbles to the Gryphons give the ball up with 58 seconds to play but Broderick Caudle puts a PPP topper on this one with an int.  Gryphons 24-21.

The cross county rivalry at Beddingfield saw two teams slug it out  at Beddingfield scored first but the extra point hit the left post to lead 6-0.  Hunt drove down to lead at the half. 7-6.  Beddingfield out slugged Hunt with a huge fourth quarter at they drove the ball the field to take a 12-7 lead and add a field goal l5-7 with 1:58 to  play but with 12 seconds to play Hunt hits a 68 yard pass to cut the lead to. 15-13 and on the 2 point try Beddingfield is offside to make the 2 pointer just a yard in a half away.   Beddingfield comes up with the defensive play and makes a tackle in the back field and win 15-13.

other scores tonight
Northern Nash 24   Smithfield Selma 7
Hillside 40 Nash central. 0
Fike 35 South Johnston 21.  Thursday night
Southern Nash 28 Ayden  Grifton 13
North edgecombe 40 Kipp Pride 24

Big East Report Card Halfway Point

Football hasn't played their first conference game yet while  all other sports have come to the halfway point and starting the second go round in conference games.  So far Northern Nash boys cross country team seems to be the class of the conference with  Steven Whitehead  as the top runner.  Rocky Mount's girls head the girls cross country with Barkley Browder the top 5k runner.

Hunt, Rocky Mount and Fike  seem to be a step ahead of the field in tennis.  Fike and Hunt are  the cream of the crop in soccer.  Hunt, Fike and Northern Nash head the field for the playoffs in Volleyball.

Before the first conference football game Hunt, Fike,Rocky Mount, Northern Nash  and Southern Nash  will be fighting and any one seems good enough to win the title and anyone could go 1-4.  Nash Central's defense is just good enough on the night their offense clicks somebody just might fall to them.  To say the least the Big East has the reputation of being the most balanced league in the east and it looks that way again this year.

Here's this week's college picks:
Clemson/Wake.   Tigers 38 Deacs22
BC/FSU. Not much of a game if FSU shows up 44-19
VA Tech/Georgia Tech. Forget this was Thursday you will have to take my word GT 24 VT17
Miami/SFLA The Hurricanes are back  35-16
C michigan/N C State if defense plays like the Clemson game they win big 31-13
Troy/Duke Devils had better be ready. Duke 41 Troy 28
N C Wesleyan/Averitt. battling Bishopswin their first 22/19
ECU/NC. This could really be a ball game.  This could go down to the last play. NC28-27
Rocky Mount is host to The Down East Football Classic When Elizabeth City Stat 0-3 play host to Fayetteville St 1-2.  I think ECSU gets in the win column with a 26-21 win.

Tonight I will be joining Edward  Green on WHIG TV for their game of the week.

Almost Last week Of Non-Conference

Considering I started out last year going 0-6 the first week of the season 36-7 at this point this season is worth a little shout  or as they say pat yourself on my back.  It only takes one week and a great season can fall to average. So as we get going this week must have A game every week making guesses.

The game of the week this week is Triton from the Dunn/Erwin area coming to Rocky Mount is the final tuneup for both.  Triton is 5-0 while the Gryphons lone loss lies at the hands of Greenville Rose.
Historically speaking the Hawks have been very good most years but fail to get out of the first or second round of the playoffs.  I have no reason to think Triton can't win this game but I'll  take RM 26-21.

Hunt at Beddingfield It is the wide open offense of Beddingfield taking on the grind it out Hunt Warriors.  Beddingfield has been trouble for everyone on their schedule and this one will be close but Hunt wins. 24-20.

Rocky Prep host SE Halifax.  SEH is average at best but that will be enough. To handle the growing Prepsters.  36-14

RMA at Lawrence. RMA travels to Bertie county and this one will not be easy but victory will come. RMA 42 Lawrence 26

Hillside at Nash Central. Hillside had a preseason as everyone was picking them as the team to beat  in 4A.   two straight losses and they will be spitting nails when they get off the bus.  Run the clock in the second half.  Hillside 58 Nash Central 6.

Smithfield Selma comes to Northern Nash. SSS is 0-5 and have given up at least 38 or more in all their losses.  Northern won't get that many but enough.  NN28.  SSS 6

North Edgecombe host Kipp Pride.  Coming off their first win of the season pride can start another losing streak. NE 22 Pride 0

Ayden Grifton at Southern Nash.  It is unusual for AG but they are winless this year.  They have to hope after being off last week The Firebirds are looking forward to Tarboro next week.  Wishful thinking.  SN. 36 AG 13
I will be helping with TV Friday night as they will be covering Hunt at Beddingfield.

Social Media And Profit Takers

Over my years as a play by play voice of several high school teams or colleges including Ahoskie high! Chowan Jr.  College and Rocky Mount High.  During football season you could find me at 5pm always every week trying to see what plays our team was going to run or what I could expect from the team we were playing.

Over thirty years you grow to become a homer and every now and then you know defects that your local team has  and at times during a broadcast can see that defect play out on the field but if you mention it on the air the next foe down the road just might be able to attack that defect you discussed on air.

I also realize that coaches can only tell you so much when discussing what might be done each week and have at times asked me not to use certain things that I might know.  It is a case of trust for me that a coach will give me access needed to do a proper broadcast as well as he can trust me when he might tell me something everyone doesn't need to know.

Today with twitter and any other things that  can get information out in the finger touch on a screen our world is made of reporters or just a plain Joe  who can use a cell phone as a camera every movement anybody makes can instantly appear on You tube or some web site.  Coaches can't trust anybody as any time they speak it just might be fodder for someone to give them their  15 minutes of glory.

It is a shame that the Nebraska coach had something caught on tape two years ago but for someone once they found it produced it as if it happen yesterday. I know as a person who tries every day I sin  but I try my best  to do the right thing.  I hope on this blog we have given information helpful but when it comes to breaking stories where I have to dig up dirt on someone I will reserve that for those who are looking for the fast track to glory.

The world we live in today you can look at and talk  to someone over the internet in a matter of a few seconds.  I have looked at setting up a twitter account and I may someday but I still like this old fashion blog system.  When I have something to say I have more to say than what Twitter will allow me to say.  I like it better when you come to visit me here than me sending it out to you when ever I want.  That way you can  visit when you want to.  Hope to see you real soon !

College Football In North Carolina

If you include Louisville who joins the ACC next year there are five ACC schools in this weeks top 25 college  football rankings.  There are none of the four North Carolina  ACC schools among them or ECU.   Seems as if it's same old same old.  Where are we headed with this years colleges from North Carolina.?

ECU:  The past ECU could score 50 but had to worry they might give up 51.  I don't know if there were many Pirate fans were very optimistic about this year but so far the defense is showing signs they may be improved.  Held Va Tech to 15 points but still lost when offense could only 10 points at home.  This past week Marshall took VAT to triple overtime at Tech.  This week's Carolina game could be a season breaker or maker depending on the outcome.

North Carolina:  If you pull for the Tar Heels are you hopeful or disappointed with a 1-2 start.  South Carolina has to be acceptable but after jumping to  a 13-0 lead the end of the Georgia Tech game has to be down right dishearting.  Don't know if a victory over ECU can turn season around but a loss would be disasterous.

N C State:  Didn't play all that well in their first two games but I think all Wolfpack fans came away with a good feeling the way they played Clemson.  Next four weeks are winnable unless they let one of the  slip up as they have done in the past.

Duke:  Trying to return to a bowl game two years in arow will be extremely tough on a team having troublem keeping the other team off the score board. The good news is Duke can score but the question is an they score enough?

Wake Forest:  If a team ever needed a win the Deacs got one in New York State in beating Army.  This game could just be the game that turns them around.  I really respect what Jim Grobe has done at Wake and I think most Sdemon Deacon fans would take a five or six win season four out of five years if that fifth year was an ACC title.

When you really look at our football teams they look about the same as every year.

Monday Morning Quarterback

Had a right fair weekend on picking both high school and college.  Went 7-1 Friday to run my record for the year to 36-7.  Saturday went 7-2  to have my record for the fall to be 21-6.  Friday missed Prep game and Saturday missed Deacs which was a good thing considering I picked against them and I also missed Maryland that score scares me to death with Maryland with this being their last season in ACC.

If there is one thing the Rocky Mount Gryphons learned Friday is that the old saying it ain't over till it's  over.  I think it is clear that  J T Smith when he is in at quarterback the Gryphons are dangerous offensive team.  Even though they are small on defense they held their on against a power running team the last two weeks.

Any time a new coach comes to town there has to be a period of good things that happen to you in order for the new coach to get the kids to believe.  Five weeks into the season and you can see that the tide is turning at Northern Nash.  Solid effort, still not there yet but heading in the right direction.

Everytime one team moves up there is always one to fall back and take their place.  Nash Central seems ready to be the team to head toward the bottom of the Big East.  Defense isn't getting any help from the offense.

The next team moving on up is RMA.  Having helped with TV there Friday just looking at the players you can see they don't act or look the same as last year.  If you like wide open football  you will see it at any RMA game.

The one Big East surprise team this year is Fike. Boy is their offense rolling.   Two more Fridays until we get to the whole purpose of  playing since August 1st conference play.

Blown Call Not A Killer

I don't care what kind of sport you play every once in a while(seems like all the time but it's not) referees,or umps make bad calls. Thursday night the Wolfpack got the short end of the stick on an 83 yard touchdown run on a call by a ref that admitted he was blocked off. My only question would be why would you call something you didn't see and TV proved out that you didn't. The bottom line is this if it were not for the TV replay we would not know whether the call was right or not. Replay is meant to get it right when there is a chance that you got it wrong. Many times after the replay has been run 15 times depending on the angle they still can't decide one way or the other. In the case of out of bounds or not why don't officials use their caps or bean bags like they do in fumbles and throw a cap where you think he might have gone out of bounds and let the play run it's course and then look at the replay. Once that whistle sounds the play is dead right or wrong. There have been many plays where the refs couldn't decide whether it was a fumble or not and the play runs it's course and afterwards it is reviewed. I would have a hard time trying to be a referee with everything I do under scrunity. I think the judgement business in front of 60,000 fans always siding against your call is not easy to do especially have you have made a major blunder in the third quarter. You hear coaches say this all the time that there are four or five plays that make the difference in winning and losing. That blown call was only one play but just a few plays later the Pack fumbles and a few plays later a touchdown. The call occurred in the third quarter it was not the last play of the game. Hold on to the ball and they are still in the game even if they have to punt. It's still 13-7 in the third quarter. Sitting at home I was jumping up and down for a touchdown and quickly slumber back down when the announcement was made. Good thing is,, there is another game next week.

Sweet Revenge

Tonight I was at RMA as I joined Wes Bradshaw and Edward Green for the high school game of the week. Word of God is coming off two straight years in the 2-a private school championship but this team is clearly a young squad with no seniors on the team. RMA took advantage of second year coach B w Holt growing knowledge of 8 man football concepts and a stone wall defense as RMA runs past WOG 57-6. WOG only score came on a 102 yard int returned for a touchdown on the last play of the first half with RMA driving to score already leading 28-0. Chris Jenkins was a man among boys as as he had two first quarter scores of 52 and 33 yards. Doesn't matter how down WOG might be this is a big win for RMA as they avenge two losses last year to WOG including a first round playoff loss. Rocky mount went to the spread offense against SouthWest Edgecombe after both teams had the ball just once in the first quarter with ball control offenses. The Gryphons score twice in the second quarter and added another in the third quarter to lead 21-0. SWE found. A soft Gryphon secondary and with less than two minutes to go SWE is trying an onside kick trailing 24-22. the Gryphons recovered the onside kick and managed to run the clock down to SWE NLT had one play from their own 35 to end the game. Northern Nash won it's home opener tonight 28-13 over Southern Vance. Beddingfield broke a 7-7 first half tie and scored three times to beat winless Nash Central 28-7. Fike pitches a shut out on Smithfield Selma 38-0. Hunt's second long trip to northeastern North Carolina and they come home with a 33-25 win over Currituck. North Edgecombe whips Weldon 28-6. aNd Tarboro dumps Roanoke Rapids 56-19. After tonight the big East teams have one more week of non conference and a week off before the conference play starts and at this point every team looks to have a chance for the playoffs except Nash Central who continues to struggle to score"

Full Moon Was Out

THe full moon was at full tilt and the PACK had Clemsom right where they wanted them , until a ref rules Brian Underwood step out of bounds on a play that would have given the Pack the lead in third quarter. Big Mo went right straight to the Tigers even after ESPN ran 15 replays and could never find where Underwood stepped out. Even while game was close never thought Pack was going to win. If Clemson is good enough to win national championship I like what I saw in the Pack. Last week I was a plain lousy going 3-3 making predictions. Makes me 14-4 so far on this season. North Carolina gave up 68 points last year at home to Georgia Tech. If Tech only gets half that will still be enough to handle the Heels Tech 34 Carolina 24. The death march of Jim Grobe continues as the Deacs travel to one of the neat football places on any Saturday afternoon. Not such a neat place when you lose. USMA. 24 Wake 21. Wake really needs this one. Duke and Pitt during the Duke glory days use to be a real big inter sectional game. Pitts first ACC game will be a win. PITT. 35 Duke. 21. We are Marshall travels to Blacksburg to take on the Hokies after they survived ECU last week. Marshall makes a game of it Tech 31 Marsall 17. A game that I don't know that anybody cares about Tulane travels to Syracuse. The Orange beats the Greenwave. The KEYDETS of VMI travel to Thomas Jefferson's house to play Virginia. Jefferson's boys 36 VMI 6 . I would like to know whether Vegas even has this game on their betting board. Bethune-Cookman travels across state to play Florida State. I think they should just stay home and get Florida STATE to send them a check. FSU 63 B-C 13 . Savannah State travels to Miami and this one will not be as bad as Florida St game. Miami 36 SS 14. Have a good friday and support your local high school football team.

Odd Event At Northern

If you are a Northern Nash fan brace yourself for an event here we are in mid season that Northern hasn't had happen all season. A home football game will take place Friday night which will be the first home football game of the season. If you have forgotten how to get to the stadium as you drive into the school property turn left at the triangle and drive past the school buses on the right as you turn right past the buses that property on the left is the football field. Just a little fun here but Southern Vance will be the team providing the opposition and they both have played one common foe. They both have lost to Northeastern. SV lost at home 0-43 while Northern lost at Northeastern 45-0. Looks like a close game here but this is Northern's home opener and they will post their second win in a row. 26-18. The game of the weekend is SouthWest Edgecombe at Rocky Mount. In the last ten years this has been an even series. SWE was shutout by Tarboro and Rocky Mount played well losing to Rosé. I think RM is better at this point of the season but the key to this game will be SWE offensive line against the Gryphon defense. Gryphons 26 SWE 12. Hunt enjoyed driving all the way to Elizabeth City so much last weekend that they want to go there again and then drive 30 miles more in going to Curritck. Currituck is unbeaten but they are not in Hunt's league. Hunt 34 Curritck 6. Fike travels to Smithfield Selma and if they play to the level they have so far this is no game. Fike 44 SSS 16 RM Preps only football victory came at home to Kipp Pride 6-0. They can get another one again this time at KP who so far this year has scored 14 points and none against RMP. Prep 20 KP 6 Beddingfield continues it' run of playing everyone in the area. They come to Nash Central. I doubt the Bulldogs can score enough to stay up. Beddingfield 35 Nash Central 13. Roanoke Rapids comes to Tarboro and in years past this just might be a real game but not this year. Vikes. 35 RR 6 Ayden Grifton comes to Southern Nash. Much better game than you might expect but the Birds remain unbeaten. SN 40 AG 24. Word of GOD travels to Rocky Mount Academy and this could be a tricky game. I am going out on the limb and taking the Eagles 42-36 So far this year 29-6. There is a college game tonight involving the Wolfpack. State will either lose this game by 40 or win 17-16. Clemson put 62 on the Pack last year and Clemson this year is better. The question is, is State better? Clemson 49 N C State 20

Local Schools Have No 2012/13 Ejections

Recently the NCHSAA announced all the teams from across North Carolina that played the entire school year 2012/13 without any player or coach getting ejected from any school sponsored sporting event. There are 396 member institutions in the NCHSAA and 129 schools played the games the honorable way. That is about two out of three sometime during the season had a player ,coach or school official tossed from a game for some reason. We all take sports way to serious because in the skeem of life the outcome of a ball game has no bearing on whether the sun rises tomorrow or not. It is interesting to note that all three public schools in Edgecombe County did not have an ejection all year. Only two of the five public schools in Nash County were ejection free Rocky Mount Prep and Nash Central. Rocky Mount, Northern Nash and Southern Nash all received a red card at some point in the season. There is no reason of course that every time two teams meet on any field of competition they can't play the game doing every thing they can do to win the game but do it in a manner of good sportsmanship. The world we live in today the world of twenty four hour news where when you watch what they put on the air there is only about 15 minutes a day that has anything that truly concerns us. We really don't need to know what happens in Arizona unless it is got something to do with National security of our country. What is missing is the "On the road segments like Charles Karalt use to do on the national scene or the Tar Heel Traveler" on WRAL. It is nice to see features like the Telegram ran Sunday on the Brice Sisters Tanner and Chandler. One of the problems in this world is violence sells. We live in a world that would rather talk about killings than talk about the things we remember fifty years from now that we call the good old days.

Football Is In High Gear

High school football is nearing the halfway point and some teams are surely setting themselves up to be contenders when conference play starts. Fike is the one team to me that to be 4-0 is the real shocker to this point. I picked them for last and their results so far say they are in the race till the end. HUNT may not be as strong as their undefeated past but but don't look past them when they appear on your schedule. They are as good as anybody and will be in it till the last week. Southern Nash can move the ball on any team in the league and when you can score you will be in every ball game. Injuries will determine how good their offense is. Rocky Mount has proven they can hold down good offenses. The offense has proven to be explosive. Any team that holds you to minimum points will have a chance. Rocky Mount probably has the best offense/defense of any team. They will be in till the end. Northern Nash has a new coach and it takes time to learn new ways and you can see that Northern is slowly coming round to the Randy Raper way. There are three more weeks until conference starts and if they continue to improve each week then they will be a bundle for anyone when conference starts. I thought in my preseason picks they would finish 5th and right Nash Central is headed there or worse. Thursday Clemson comes to Raleigh to play State. Clemson has looked like a world beater while State is not exactly setting the world on Fire. Just might be what the Pack needs national tv. The new look NFL with all of the wide open offenses it still being won by the teams that have the best quarterbacks. Right now there may not be a better quarterback in the NFL than Russell Wilson of the Seahawks. Wilson is not the so called run at every opportunity QB but runs when needed and the Seahawks defense just might be a Super Bowl contender.

Fun Trip Over The Weekend

Followed Campbell Volleyball over the weekend in which Campbell's new coach Greg Goral returned to his stomping grounds for the last five years to Morehead State where he was part of the coaching staff that won the Missouri Valley Conference title the last four years. Whenever you win teams needing a coach come calling to the winners an thus Goral now at Campbell. Morehead does a neat thing before each one of their home games as they have someone to make a ceremonial first serve. Saturday night Jaime Gordon got Goral to make the first serve. I don't know whether Goral knew this was coming or not But Gordon presented Goral with his championship ring from winning the MVC Conference Championship last season. Nice touch from Morehead State. I know everyone in Buies Creek are pleased with the 7-4 start and you could tell those from Morehead loved Greg with all the hugs he got this weekend. It is official the Oakland A's released Xavier Macklin last week and the former Nash Central Bulldog has a decision to make whether will continue to try to make it in pro baseball or look to his future else where. Injuries have cut many a players career short. X never got going this year from shoulder surgery last year. Brian Goodwin's summer seems to be over. Harrisburg lost in the Eastern League finals last Wednesday and Goodwin did not get a call to Washington. Jim Grobe has been the perfect coach for Wake Forest but a lost Saturday to Louisiana-Monroe might be the first or should I say second nail in his coffin after losing to BC last week. The life of a coach is tenuous at best. Just five years or so every college in the country was knocking on his door. I hope the Deacs turn it around except when the Pack comes calling.

Beginning To Make Sense

Four Friday nights are in the books and who teams are and what they are going to be for this season is taking shape. I was 9-1 on the picks for Friday but boy was I wrong on that one. Tarboro dominated SouthWest Edgecombe with a shutout. What can we tell from this? Tarboro is still the one to beat in the Tar Roanoke. Just maybe the best football coach in the area is A B Whitley who for all these years is a part time after work coach. The loss for the Cougars is painful for another year, but looks to me Beddingfield the last game will be their season. Rocky Mount's defense kept Rose under control for the most part. Gryphons will be in the Big East hunt all the way. Northern Nash keeps improving every week. Would not want to play them at any time during the rest of the season If they keep learning under Raper. Nash Central has a decent defense and a little help from the offense would help their cause. Southern Nash will be in the conference race all the way. Rocky Mount Prep scored 20 points against a team that Stands undefeated. Good showing from a building program. Even when they lose they score 30. Most of the time they score 50 every week. Rocky Mount Academy has a shot getting to the second round of the private playoffs this season. Both Hunt and Fike are setting up that the last game of the season could either be for a playoff spot or championship. After Friday night I am now 29-6 on the season. Is it another Friday yet?

Football Friday From Kentucky

Tonight the Doughtie's are in Morehead Kentucky where Campbell volleyball won their 7th game of the season which equals their win total for all of last year. They stand at 7-2 which is the 2nd best start in Campbell history. To Day visited Keeneland Farms in Lexington where they were having a horse sale. Morehead is in the mountains of eastern Kentucky about 60 miles from Lexington. Here is what I know from all my friends who have kept me up with the scores. Rose 21. Rocky Mount 7. Tied at 7 at the half Rose scores twice in the second half for the win. Despite the loss this is a good effort by the Gryphons. Tarboro 14-0 over SouthWest Edgecombe. In my predictions I got the Tarboro score right but missed SWE by 40. Southern Nash 52 Roanoke Rapids 27. At one point the score was 42-7 in the second quarter. Thank you FIrebirds for calling off the dogs in the second half. Hertford County 14 Nash Central 7. Nash Central must be the best 0-4 team in the state. Hunt 28. Northeastern 16. Hunt took control of this one in the second half. Rocky Academy 52 St David's 7. Think I hit that game on the head but I'll have to look it up when I get back. The Last word I saw Fike was on the verge of beating Beddingfield. Finally The Knights have got their first one. Playing their 4th game of their four game road trip to start the season the Knights win at Warren County 21-8. now let's see what they can do in front of the home folks next week.

Tech visits The Pirates

North Carolina and NC State both are off Saturday so it cuts down on the number of games to pick from. The Hokies of Virginia Tech make a visit to ECU and don't you know Pirate Nation will be on fire come Saturday. After the season the Gobblers had last year this is not a team that you would expect Tech to be. Don't care who they are or what they are right now they bring the label ACC and just the name Virginia Tech is enough To say we beat Tech fifty years from now. Can this Pirate team win Saturday? Yes it but will they. Tech defense did plenty against Alabama so I suspect they will be hard for the Pirate to run up and down the field. The big question on this game is can the Pirate defense do enough to slow down and average Tech Offense. I doubt it Tech 23 ECU 20 Georgia Tech at DUKE Gone is Duke's Starting QB but is this a major problem or not. I think Duke's problem is slowing down Georgia Tech enough to get their offense on the field. If Duke causes turn overs they have a chance but if Techjust keeps hanging on to the ball for long drives it will be a long day. Tech 34 Duke 24 Wake Forest plays one of those teams from Louisiana with a - in their name Monroe. Look Wake couldn't beat BC last week then why do we think they can win Saturday. The only reason I can think of is they play home. Wake 34 UL-M 30 Charleston Southern at Campbell. Campbell won it's first game for Mike Minter last week but CS 2-0 will not let CU win again. CS. 34 Campbell 24 Virginia Southern at NC W. WEsleyan played well last week and and this week they play home back at the Sports Complex. if it worked for Rocky Mount Prep it will work for NCW too. NCW 27 VS 13. Alabama at Texax A&M. I don'T think Bama will be number one at the end. I don't see where Johnnie football is a Heisman winner either. This will be a close game but Bama wins 24-17. Campbell Volleyball is in a tournament in Morehead Kentucky and that is where we are right now. Need all the help anyone can give me on the high school football scores tonight. THANKS

Computers Can Drive You Crazy

I am computer eliterate to say the least. The past couple of days when writing a story. I put my paragraphs where they are suppose to be and when I hit preview looks just like I want. For some reason when it appears on line all the lines run together an I have no idea what causes it. Now that I don't have any more hair since I have pulled it all out let's get to this weeks high school games and there are some more good ones. I am 20-5 after three weeks. Rose at Rocky Mount: Rose seems to be riding high having beaten two 4-Aschools already before conference play starts. Rose is always tough one for the Gryphons unless they are exceptional. Don't think they are that good yet. Rose 27 Rocky Mount 21 Beddingfield at Fike: This could be a good one but if Fike is any where as good Friday as they have been so far Fike will win this one. Fike 36 Beddingield 26 Northern Nash at Warren County: This just might be the week the Knights get that first win for Randy Raper. I did a game years ago at the old Warren County High but not at new school so I don't know if WC has a home field advantage like they use to have when in downtown Warrenton. Knights 21- Warren County 16 Tarboro at Southwest Edgecombe: I personally don't think this one will be close but this is a cross county rivalry. SWE 40 Tarboro 14. St Davids at Rocky Mount Academy: I know nothing about St Davids so that gives the edge to the Eagles RMA 56 St Davids 32 Walkertown At Rocky Mount Prep: Had to look up to see where Walkertown was and how small can the world be but found out Walkertown is coached by Mike Springston who played on the last undefeated team at Weldon way back in the 70's with my first cousin Mike Doughtie. That alone would cause me to pick Walkertown. So far have scored at least 50 in three games and only given up 6. Looks like Walker town is a good pick here Walkertown 56 Rocky Mount Prep 0 Southern Nash at Roanoke Rapids: Best I can say for this one is UGLY If the Firebirds hold on to the ball it's over at the half 54-6. Hunt at Northeastern: Don't be surprised if Northeastern wins this one but I think it will be close and Hunt gets a win. 24-21 Nash Central at Hertford County: Back to back Big East teams in Ahoskie and Nash Central is the first one to lose. HC 36 Nash Central 20 North Edgecombe at SE Halifax: Back in the day I hated doing radio games from SEH. As soon as the band gets on the field they beat those drums constantly until the game ends, they never stop. SEH 26 North Edgecombe 14

Panthers Don't Know What To Do With Cam

The Carolina Panthers lost opening day after having a defensive gem but the offense was as good as a piece of coal. Cam Newton is the so called modern day pro quarterback. Accuracy lacking he is liable to miss a wide open receiver by five yards or run fifty for a score. Don't know whether they are scared he's going to get hurt but it just seems to me they have a bit in Cam's mouth just like you would use on a horse. My question would be why. I am of the belief that if we are going to spend all week preparing to win why not try to win on Sundays. The Panthers seemed content to look good losing. He might get hurt but I would turn him loose like RG3 was used last year. As a fan I don't mind pulling for a loser as long as they are trying. I don't see that from the Panthers with Cam as quarterback. 1/3 of September is over and Brian Goodwin has yet to be called up to Washington. The reason Harrisburg his AA farm team is playing for the Eastern League champion. They won their first round in four games and Brian had an excellent series. Brian finished the regular season hitting 252 getting 19 doubles 11 triples and 10 homeruns. The playoffs if it goes five games will be over Saturday. Hobbs Johnson's season is over and I don't know how he could play any better to earn a shot a AA next spring. He made seven appearances once he arrived in Wisconsin pitching 13 innings allowing just one earned run. That is an ERA of .067. He struck out 23 of the 39 batters he got out. Hobbs walked only four and he did not give up as homer all summer. If you add his four appearances while in Helena Montana he pitched 20 innings and gave up 2 earned runs. This all happened after Hobbs pitched a master piece against N C State in the College World Series. Is the baseball career of Xavier Macklin over? Spending his second summer in three summers in Vermont of the New York Penn league the short season rookie league for those who just signed pro contracts after the June Draft. X was there after having major shoulder surgery and missed all last season. The next to the last game of the season he hit his first pro home run but hit only 155 for season in which he only play one out of three games. I doubt that Oakland will keep him another year.

Another Week To Evaluate

Three weeks into the high school football season there is another week of non-conference games and there are a few that will really give us a good view of who has it and who is not quite there yet. Rose at Rocky Mount: Rose has dominated two 4-A schools and Nash Central in their first three games. Looking at Rocky Mount's schedule so far the only quality game on the schedule is Hertford County. The history of these two schools is when Rose is good the only time Rocky Mount wins is only when they have a super team. We will find out Friday where Rocky Mount is this year. They don't have to win but stay in the game. Tarboro travels to SouthWest Edgecombe: No longer a conference game this county rival game means more to the fans than what in means to winning championships. Tarboro is quick and small while the Cougars are their normal beast on the line and you can expect them to try to drive Tarboro into the dirt in Pinetops. Regardless of the outcome If Tarboro come out healthy they will be prepared to conference play. Nash Central travels to Hertford County which proved last week to an play with anybody. The Bulldogs can keep this one close then there is an improvement in the air for the Bulldogs. South Nash at Roanoke Rapids: If Southern Holds on to the ball this could be a game the clock runs constantly in the second half. Hunt At Northeastern: Hunt roller coaster ride this week travel to Elizabeth City and even though this is a 2-A-3A match up this is no give me for Hunt. Beddingfield at Fike: Another one of those means more to the fans but is is a big game for the future of both teams. Fike is much better than any one thought. Beddingfield can win this one. Not long till Friday night and we will get some answers.

ACC Top Heavy In Football

Went. 5-1 on my college picks this weekend only Missing Wake/BC. Overall record is 11-1 after two weekends. We will begin with Wake Forest who lost at Boston College 24-10. I kind of get the feeling that those in the decision making understands that Wake much like Duke are just not 10 wins teams every year and are satisfied when ever they can win five and once in a life time win a conference championship. Seems as patience running a little short with Jim Grobe and four wins or less this season could be his last in Winston. ECU is off to a 2-0 start but who in Pirate Land is happy with the defense. Coach Ruffin was a D coordinator before arriving in Greenville. Up Next is Virginia Tech who is very beatable. They only have an average offense at best. Defense must shine in this one. NC State is 2-0 by the skin of their teeth. They sure do look like they have a pocket quarterback in an offense that needs to be a mobile moving QB. May struggle until they get their mobile starting QB back. That will be toward the end of the season and this could get to be a long year in Raleigh. Carolina 2-0 beat a directional team from Tennessee. Gone are the days of beating a DII team by 50 or more unless they are terrible. Defense looks real suspect again. you know one problem with a team that likes to be quick on offense is your defense is right back out on the field again. Duke beat Memphis but loss their starting QB. Like State entire style of team changes with the backup. I think Duke had a Bowl game last year and will be a while before they get another. NCW lost on Friday night on the road by a touchdown. Defense looks decent but a couple more touchdowns and victories will come. Miami becomes the second ACC team to beat a rather strong SEC team. Just maybe one of the top ACC teams can be in the National Championship talk when November comes. Clemson looks like they are for real and Florida State. If you noticed there is no North Carolina team in that talk.

Rough Computer Night

I would like to apologize for not passing along other scores from around the area Friday night but had plenty of WIFI issues in Buies Creek.Went. 7-2 on the night giving me a 20-5 record so far this year.
Misses: Fike 41 Kinson 34. It is obvious Fike is much better than I had given them credit.
Hobgood 72 RMA 40. The number of points was about right. Just not enough by the right team.

Wins:  Rocky Mount gets big win 26-19 over Hertford Co but defense exposed in secondary and small up front.  On offense th Gryphons have plenty play makers.

Tarboro over Northern Nash 21-7.   The Knights start playing a whole game they will be trouble for everyone.  Tarboro has depth issues when they play larger schools like 3A teams.  Should be fine when conference starts.

New Hanover 36 Hunt 13.  Hunt no where as good as the past 3 or 4 years but you had better be ready to play them when they appear on your schedule they are not a bad team.

SouthWest Edgecombe 28 Greene Central 7. Every one in Eastern Plains if you want to win the Conference championship runs though Pinetops.

Rose 34 Nash Central 6. Quite frankly I think the Bulldogs gave a good effort and could be trouble for everyone if they all get on the same page.

Southern Nash 28 Bunn 23.   The Firebirds are winning and look awful doing it. Look out if they get it all together.

Louisburg 54. RM Prep 14. About what I expected.

I will end tonight as once again today Campbell went five sets in Volley ball beating  Georgetown 15-10 in fifth set. If you go on line to the Campbell University web site and pull up today's story of their win over Georgetown the picture associated with  the story has coach Greg  Goral and the Campbell bench cheering the team on to victory.  You will see in the photo former Gryphon Volleyball manager  Morgan Doughtie leading the cheers.  Look the manager never makes the high lights so this is Morgan's big moment.

On The Verge Of A Heart Attack

Tonight Campbell Volleyball had their home opener and tonight they were playing Indiana St. And this one went five sets and all five games went right down to the wire.

Good Gryphon Friend Dominque Henderson  was feeding me text of the Hertford County/Rocky Mount football  game.  Hertford County found the Gryphon run game tough to deal with but scored first on a 56 yard td pass to take a7-0 lead.  The Gryphons respond but miss the extra point to trail 7-6.   Another screen pass will fine the enzone and HC leads 13-6.  Rashawn Harris will score on a41 yard punt return  and the game is tied at the half 13-13.

Not doing anything running the ball the Bears switch to the wish bone in the third quarter but guess how they score on another pass but the receiver fumbles into the enzone and HC recovers to lead 19-13.  The Gryphon defense picks up a fumble and rumbles for a touch down and with the extra point leads 20-19 still in the third quarter.  The offense adds another touchdown to lead 26-19.

Now back in Buies Creek we are headed to the fifth set with the score 11-11 and here comes a text from Dominque 1.59 to play the Bears on Gryphon 20.  volleyball is 12-12- 13-13-14-14 -15-15 16-15 and here comes a text Deangelo Hall int on a 4th and 14  Gryphons got the ball. 17-15 Campbell wins.  Then another text game over it is ours.

The Gryphons are 3-0 and with this win Campbell is4-2. After last year going 7-24. Three of their wins has been five setters with score of  17-15 -16-14-and 15-11.Too early in the season for these kind of games on the heart.

Palmer Finally Gets A Statue

Arnold Palmer who was the most flamboyant golfer in the history of the world until Tiger came along will finally get a Statue at Wake Forest University.  Arnie's Army  a crowd of people following Palmer when other big names in the fifties Hogan, Snead and the likes couldn't match the total between them that Palmer had watching him combined.

I guess it was because Palmer went to the old Wake Forest College in the town of Wake Forest in Wake County and not to the Wake Forest that resides in Winston Salem.  Look a golfer goes to Wake every year on the Arnold Palmer scholarship and I don't care who you are when the word Wake Forest comes up you think Arnold Palmer and golf first.  It is about time Deacons.

Saturday is college football so here we go with this weeks picks: ECU has already put me 1-0 but quite frankly I hated the black with purple numerals.  Rocky Mount JV's beat Hertford County 35-7.  Here's Saturday's college picks

NC Wesleyan @ Stevenson. Stevenson is up around Baltimore.  I don't know why where they  are makes a difference other than on the road.  Stevenson 17 NCW 16

Middle Tennessee @ North Carolina.  Just think knowing that $20,000 could be theirs if an agent calls Carolina just might get a good effort Saturday  Carolina 36 MT 14

Richmond at N C State  Those of you who thinks this game is a rout you had better back up.  State wins but no blow out   35-21

Duke at Memphis  Yes this is Memphis State and we will find out if Duke is really  an improved program.  These are the kind of games in the past that Duke loses.   Duke 38 Memphis 24

Tonight Wake travels to Boston College  and the winner will be tied with Florida State for first in their division.  Wake 24 BC13

Finally I would like to say congratulations to former NCW basketball player Brandon Givens the 2013 the USA South player of the year has signed a pro basketball contract in Luxenborg.  Their season starts the first of October.

Third Week Guesses(Predictions)

Off to a decent start so far this year 13-3 on my weekly guesses and this week there some very interesting games that could be challenging.  Here we go with week three....

Rocky Mount 2-0 @Hertford County 2-0 Quite frankly this may very well be one of the toughest games to pick this week.  I like what I see in the Rocky Mount defense and being very begrudging giving up yards.  I honestly don't know what to make of Hunt so far this year whether the HC victory over the Warriors was HC is good or the Warriors are average  Gryphons is a dilly 24-19

The next hardest game to judge is Kinston 2-0 @ Fike2-0:  Like Hunt I don't know what to make of Fike as of yet but I think this week will tell us a lot. Deep down in my soul I don't think Fike is there yet this year so I am taking Kinston 28-21.

Northern Nash 0-2@Tarboro1-1:  Tarboro left several players home last week due to team issues and don't know whether they will play this week or not. Tarboro has depth issues as they have too many players going both ways.  At this point Northern just has issues but I don't think this one will be as bad as last week.  Tarboro 21 Northern 6.

Rocky Mount Prep1-1  @ Loiusburg1-1:Louisburg wins this one  40-6.

St Davids @Rocky Mount Academy1-0.  There are games coming that will be harder for the Eagles they take down St Davids 38-13.* Understand RMA is traveling to Hobgood Friday so RMA will win but the score will be higher  RMA54 Hobgood 38

Greene Central 0-2 @SouthWest Edgecombe2-0:  Unless there is some major changes in my opinion between now and next week I'm picking SWE over Tarboro then why would I go against the Cougars this week.  Cougars 44 Greene Central 7

Nash Central 0-2 @ Rose 2-0:  Rose has won twice against 4-A foes  so unless the Rampants have slept all week the Bulldogs don't have a chance .  Rose 53 Bulldogs 14

Bunn 1-1 @ Southern Nash 2-0 Firebirds should win a little easier than last week but not by much more.  Firebirds 36 Bunn 22.

North Edgecombe 1-1 @ SE Halifax1-1.  Winnable game if every thing falls the Warriors way but I doubt it.
SE Halfax 24 North Edgecombe 12

New Hanover 0-1 @ Hunt 1-1:  NH lost to a South Carolina school last week and most of the time those SC schools are rather good when they cross the border.  I think the question here is do I think New Hanover is better than Hertford County who beat Hunt last week and the answer is yes.  New Hanover 27- Hunt 14.
Forgot about ECU tonight:National TV everyone wearing black Pirates big 52-31

Coach Pleas Stay Till The End

Coach Dave Doeren the new head football coach at State plead with State fans during his weekly news conference to stay to see the game out till the end.  If you watched the game on TV Saturday at 12:30pm and saw after halftime the stadium was half empty and most of the time when that happens right after the half the home team is getting killed.

Yes this was a TV game on Labor day weekend and yes it was hot.  Who in their right mind plays a football game in the South in the afternoon before October.  It is too hot to sit in 90 degree weather with 80% humidity.  But oh yes this was a TV and TV said this game would be played at 12:30 so part of college athletics to get more revenue from TV is to play the game at Midnight Friday if TV says so.

I don't know how many of you remember back in the late 90's when Lou Holtz was the coach at South Carolina and they came to Raleigh for a Thursday night game when Thursday games we not yet a regular part of the TV schedule but they played the game in a Tropical Storm.  There was no lightening but it rained buckets most of the night.  Since I was a season ticket holder then you know I was in my seat with all my poncho's on and stayed dry the entire night.  While walking to my car after State beat South Carolina 10-0 a gust of wind came up and ripped my poncho off 100 yards from my car.  By the time I got to my car I could not have been any wetter if I had of sat the entire game without a poncho.

TV said the game will be played and it was.  The coach has every right to ask the fans to stay till the end, let's face it.  That game with Louisiana Tech was closer than the score.   There have been may come backs made in every stadium when most of the fans were in cars headed home when the come back occurred

I just didn't fall off the turnip truck and I understand many of the fans while sitting in 90 plus degree weather had a drink or two before going in the stadium and as they sat there boiling they were going into a state of dehydration with what ever level of alcohol was in there system.

Every fan that pays the price to attend any game has the right to leave anytime they want to whether winning or losing.  I remember listening to Woody Durham one Saturday when Carolina  was down to I don't remember who 14-3 with about three minutes to go and they came back to win the game 17-14 and his comment on the winning score with only seconds left was something " What a great comeback that you were not here to see" referring all the fans had departed when they thought the game was lost.

We are a soft society these days.  We love air condition  and any time we have to sweat I would as soon go home and watch on TV. I know coaches want the stands full until the very end but I don't care who the coach or team is the high price ticket section is going to leave when they want winning or losing and the only thing a coach can do about it is win and ask them to buy season tickets again next year.

Can We Judge The First Two Weeks?

Last week on high school picks I was 8-2 giving me a 13-3 record so far this year.  Non-conference games are hard to judge since their is no history on the season to decide whether it was a good win or bad loss or neither.  Let's take a look at where the first two weeks lead us.

Rocky Mount :2-0 beat Webb and South Granville.  Friday SG handled Chapel Hill and the previous week Webb beat Granville Central who wiped the floor with Rocky Mount Prep last Friday.  Sure will get a good idea about the Gryphons after this Friday against Hertford County who upset Hunt 21-15 and stopped the Warriors 22 game regular season win streak.

Hunt: 1-1 Beat South Central opening week and SC lost 46-50 to West Craven this past Friday. Hard to tell at this point about the Warriors but this Friday's RM/HC game will give everyone a chance to compare scores since HC will have visited both in two weeks.

Tarboro:  1-1  If I had to say right this minute the Vikes are not as good as they have been the last five years.  Smaller hurts them against big burly teams.  Won't see many more (Southern Nash) until playoffs. Because of their size they need to stay healthy for the playoffs in 1-A.

SouthWest Edgecombe:  1-1 Gave Southern Nash a tussle and destroyed North Edgecombe.  I think the Southern Nash game was worth the thought that the Cougars are a real contender in the Eastern Plains.

Southern Nash:2-0  I think they will go as far as their health will take them.  Right now already reaching into the JV's for running backs.  Has several break-a-way runs but no touchdowns as I saw no barn burning running backs.  If some of the running backs get back and the line stays healthy they will be near the top.

Northern Nash: 0-2  I don't know whether any one thought they would be any better than 1-1 now but Cornith Holders had a big win over 4-A Clayton last Friday.  The score at Northeastern concerns me  and Tarboro this week.

Nash Central: 0-2  I picked them fifth in Big East this year and the way the first two games have started they are right on schedule.

Fike: 2-0:Picked them last in Big East but victories over Bunn an ok team but Roanoke Rapids who is down and out this year.  will know more about fike at this week's game with Kinston.

Rocky Mount Academy:1-0  Will have a winning season this year and will give the big boys a run for their money.

Rocky Mount Prep: 1-1  Just might win another one for the year is over.

North Edgecombe: 1-1  Should make playoffs but conference championship with Tarboro in conference is out of the question.

Just A Little Respect

If you recall last year when State played Tennessee the opening few minutes it seemed as if The Vols were quicker that the Pack.  It also seemed the same in the Carolina/South Carolina game.  Both last year and this year once the teams adjusted to the speed of the game it was even for the most part the last three quarters.  Carolina didn't embarrass themselves after it was to the point it could have been.

Thank goodness State recovered two fumbles inside the 20 or their game could have been a lot closer.  The new State attack requires speed and if State stays healthy it look like they had speedsters running and catching the ball.  Sure would like to see a better defensive performance next time out. Once State's Starting QB went down so did the offense.

Hard to tell whether Duke is better or not even though they handled Central a week after they fired their coach.  Same with the Deacs, need to see more.

If you are a first year D1 football program do it the way UNC Charlotte and Old Dominion did it.  Bring in an entire team on scholarship.  Charlotte pounds Campbell who is taking the little steps at a time and Charlotte blast them.  ODU scared ECU to death.  Looks as if the Pirates can still score but they still can't stop anybody either.

The three SEC/ACC match ups Clemson pulled out a victory over Georgia and Todd Gurley in a game that Gurley was fabulous.  Considering we all thought Virginia Tech would get slaughtered if you take away the special teams mistakes in which Beamer is famous for VA Tech played ok.

It always seemed these SEC/ACC match ups never happen in a ACC football Stadium.  What happens when one does but the ACC wins.  I'd like to see Alabama start the season at Clemson  one time and let's see how good the SEC really is.

All in all the ACC did alright the first weekend .  I know it will happen but they are going to have to play a lot of football games to find one as good as the Georgia/Clemson game.  Georgia will finish top ten and Clemson really does have a shot at the BCS title game if they don't slip up some place.  Since the ACC has no respect over all they would drop out of the championship picture if they do but Georgia will not even if they lose again.

A few Surprises

Rocky Mount is off to a 2-0 start and I don't think anybody is shocked at that but who expected the Gryphons to look this good on defense?,not me for one.

Hello Eagles Rocky Mount Academy rolls in their opener against Halifax Academy. 49-7.  The old ball coach B W Holt can score in any league 14 man football  you name it.

I told you Tarboro was  going to play their second toughest game of their regular season.  Washington gave Havelock a hand full last week and Havelock crushed New Bern Friday so a 20-14 lost to a 3-A team that's pretty good is not bad at all.

IF there is a team that needs a good doctor right now it's Southern Nash.  Used two backs up from the jv's team extensively against Beddingfield.  They have an excellent line but not enough speed in back field.

I think everyone with Northern Nash is disappointed after an 0-2 start but losing 45-0 at Northeastern stings.

Nash Central improved over last week but the lack of offense  has everyone scratching their head.

Don't feel sorry for SouthWest Edgecombe.  I don't care what  the first name of the head coach is all I know is his last name is Cobb and all the coaches I know name Cobb can coach.

Spent the day watching Campbell Volley ball and they won twice today in 5th set tie breakers.  Too early in year for this kind of games on the heart.

Speaking of the heart would like to finish on a real high note.  Former Gryphon Mason Holt first three weeks at Campbell have been challenging to say the least.  His first day on the cross country he failed his physical.  Had to see a heart specialist before Campbell would clear him to run.  Saturday in his first meet at Caroina Mason ran his personal best at 16.03 to help Campbell finish second at an invitational at Carolina.
