Vikings Are Perfect

The Tarboro Viking stopped the Yellow Jackets of Carver High on a fourth and One at the Viking 1/2 yard line with less than three minutes remaining in the game to preserve their perfect season and their second straight State 2-A football title. The Vikings repeat with a 21-13 victory at B B&T field on the campus of Wake Forest University.

The Viking tried their best to give the game away in the first half putting the ball on the ground five times. The first killing a great chance to take the early lead after Carver's pass was intercepted deep in Carver Territory.

Later a bad snap from center caused Carver to have first and goal on the Tarboro seven yard line when Tarboro failed to get a punt off which lead to Carver's first score and a seven -zero lead. Three more times the Viking put the ball on the on the ground luckily they recovered all three.

Late in the second quarter Todd Gurley broke a tackle and raced thirty nine yards and after the PAT lead 7-6. The ensuing kickoff Carver went well into Viking territory and was able to score just before the half to lead 13-7.

The third quarter belonged to the Vikings as the running game got going but oddly enough a touchdown pass got the Vikings the lead back. Carver thought they had a quarterback sack but Williams the Viking quarterback somehow delivered a pass to the goal line in which the Carver defender thought he was going to intercept only to find Todd Gurley lying in the end zone with a Viking Touchdown.

The very next Carver drive Markel Howell intercepted a Yellow Jacket pass and officially ran 36 yards for the touchdown but his run with the ball was more like fifty yards. The Viking held Carver in check until they ran and old hook and ladder play which netted a big Yellow Jacket first down and momentum for the last gasp effort which the Vikings stopped inside the one.

Markel Howell was voted the Viking best defensive player. Chris Lane won the offensive performer and the MVP of the game was Todd Gurley who score two of the Viking touchdowns.

You can catch some of the players with me Sunday night on the Stretchlon Sports Show at 8.00pm on WHIG. You can also go the WHIG.com and watch on the internet if you are not able to watch on the cable. It will be fun hosting the champs again.
