Wrestling Wins Opener

Tonight at the Rocky Mount gym the Gryphons opened the season with a 74-5 victory over the Vikings of Tarboro. Rocky mount was able to present a lineup for all fourteen matches and Tarboro could not in six matches so the final score shows six forfeits by the Vikings.

The very first match of the evening turned out to be the most exciting one as Alex Knight wrestling in the 130 pound weight limit took on Benex Velasco and with 15 seconds to go in the third period Knight trailed 8-6 but was able to go up with a reversal and addition point to win the match 9-8.

The next four matches were forfeits as Nick Westcott won at 135, Chandler Phillips at 140, Deshawn Taylor at 145 and Damien Smith at 152 were all able to get the referee to hold their hand in victory without getting on the mat.

The 160 pound match Antonio Rameriz of Rocky Mount used just a few seconds over one minute to pin Tarboro's Arron Honesty. Rocky Mount's J K Williamson won on a pin over Travorius Joyner in the 171 pound class.

The lone victory of the night for the Vikings occurred when Chris cannon in the 189pinned the gryphons Matthew Yenny.

Cequarrie Wynn won on a disqualification in the third period while wrestling at 215. Xavier Hart won on a pin at the heavyweight level over Mary Bridges.

Sidorian Petway won for Rocky Mount on a forfeit at 103 pounds and Mason Holt won at 112 on a forfeit.

The final two matches were pins by Adam Mcrae for Rocky mount at 119 pounds over Marquell pitt and John Earl pinned Willis Shifflett at 125.

Good start for the Gryphon wrestlers.

Bad News to pass on:
The Gryphon basketball team will not go to the Glaxo tournament for the second year in a row after all. When the original Glaxo schedule came out and when the Gryphons were not invited they obligated themselves back to the Nash County Christmas. It is now too late to pull out of the Nash County Tournament so they will stay in Nash County instead of playing at Broughton high like last year.

Tomorrow will talk more football but I will give you this little teaser. South Johnston loves to spread the field and throw.
