Conference Play Starts In Volley Ball

Matt Habit with camera  and I were schedule Tuesday night to be in Tarboro to cover for the Stretchlon Sports show the Rocky Mount -Tarboro soccer match. The forecast was not good all day and we would rather not have the camera wet chose to go inside instead and we headed to Nash Central to cover the Rocky Mount -Nash Central Volleyball conference opener.

A flood fell while we were inside so I think the call was a good one to move inside.  Nash Central jump on Rocky Mount in the first game and took the Lady Gryphons into over time in the second game before the Lady Gryphons out served the Lady Bulldogs and won three games to one.  Tab Wilcox  in her third year as the head volley ball coach has yet to lose a regular season game in conference. This match can be seen Sunday night on the Stretchlon Sports Show.

Using my crystal ball I doubt this team can make it three years in a row undefeated in conference play as they are not as tall as the past and not as athletic.  They still have the best player in the league in Tia Hudgins but generally this team is young on experience.

We did make the right call moving in doors as the soccer match was flooded out  as the Tarboro soccer field was under water from one of these showers we got Tuesday.

The Gryphon football is 2-0-1 here in the early going.  You have to be impressed that after hardly any practice last week the Gryphons with 6.22 to play in the game ran the clock out on Hertford County preserving the 28-22 win. .  That is making every third down to keep the ball and running the clock  That's hard to do the last game of the season much less after a week of sitting home and not doing any practicing.

Good friend Wes Bradshaw is doing the play by play on WHIG-TV this season.  Now that he has a steady job which I think this one he has now he has had over a year.  That is a world record for WES.  That job will keep him on call this weekend and yours truly will fill in for him.  This week The WHIG game of the week will be SouthWest Edgecombe at Rocky Mount.  Who can believe that SWE is 0-2 so far this year.

If you happen to go to the game Friday night Morgan Doughtie will be singing the National Anthem.  I have heard her sing it about three thousand times since Mike Gainey asked her to do it over the weekend.  Now I know all the words.

Just a little update on Xavier Macklin as Vermont finished first in their division and started their playoffs last night as the #2 seed.  Xavier finished hitting 230 in his first year in pro baseball.

Not so good news for Tarboro fans as Shaun Draughn was cut by the Redskins Saturday which was the day all NFL teams had to get down to 53 players  to start the season this weekend.
