Lady Gryphons Pull Shocker In Opening Round

You have heard me say this before here that the Coastal Conference is a Volleyball League.  The past few years the Big East has done very well in the tennis  playoffs and they started that way again as Rocky Mount has gone to West Carteret and knocked off the  previously undefeated Patriots     The final was 5-1 Lady Gryphons.

This surely adds fuel to the fire of only top two teams from each conference making any playoff as it makes round one do or die even for the undefeated teams.  This win makes the Lady Gryphons 11-6 on the season and West Carteret falls to 13-1

Nash Central as an undefeated #1 seed from the Big East was given the task of heading to C B Aycock to take on a team that has lost only  once in 23 matches.  Aycock the #1 seed from the Eastern Carolina was 22-1 while Nash Central was 15-0.  This was truly  a match of two Titans in the opening round.  Well at least on paper it should be a battle to the end of the doubles matches but Nash Central has no trouble at all and wins 6-0 sending both Big East teams to next Tuesday's second round.  Thursday -Friday and Saturday starts the singles and doubles Regional at Barton College.

Both Rocky Mount and Nash Central played two teams with a combined record of 35-1 and after the Big East got through with them they are a combined 35-3 and were beaten in 11 of the 12 matches.  Rocky Mount advances to the second round where they will travel to Eastern Wayne who was a 9-0 winner over Currituck.  Currituck was the #1 seed from the Northeast/Coastal 3-A/2A league who came into the playoffs with a 6-8 record.  Eastern Wayne is now 14-4.

Nash Central waits word on the winner of the South Brunswick/Jacksonville winner.  If #1 from the Waccamaw South Brunswick wins Nash Central travels there next Tuesday. If #2 Jacksonville from the Coastal wins Jacksonville comes to Nash Central

One of the reasons that there has been such a hard time finding the seedings  in Volleyball is that just about every league is in the mist of their end of year tournaments and the official starting day for Volleyball is Saturday but Rocky Mount's first round foe White Oak doesn't want to play on Saturday either and have agreed to move the game to Thursday.

Northern Nash host Rocky Mount in soccer tonight.  Hopefully the rain will be gone so this one can make it to TV Sunday night.
