Girls basketbal Jamboree

Thursday afternoon both gyms at Rocky Mount high school will be filled with basketball players as six girls basketball teams will find out how they compare with other teams of the area.

Rocky Mount will host Northern Nash, Nash Central,Southwest Edgecombe, Rose and North Edgecombe. The action begins at 4.30 pm and each squad with have three games and should conclude around 9.30 Thursday night.

The boys will host a jamboree on Saturday.

I hope that the weatherman is right. All forecasts seem to be saying the low pressure system Ida will move off by Friday morning and the chance of rain is spotty for Friday. Sounds like a good night for a playoff football game featuring the Gryphons and the Falcons of South Central.

We have not played one game yet, but the playoffs sure are causing a lot of controversy. I have already reported the plight of Terry Sanford High School which has had to forfeit 9 games due to the use of an ineligible player. That leaves them with not enough wins to qualify for the playoffs so instead of being a conference number one seed they are out.

Pine Forest the team Terry Sanford was suppose to play has been granted a victory over Sanford and now will prepare for the second round.

The Terry Sanford Principal has been suspended pending further investigations to the possible grade changing at the end of the 2008 academic year in order to keep a player eligible.

As much as I love sports I can not see cheating to win being something that would be satisfying after each game.

If you thought that took the cake here is a new item. Currituck High school is 1-10 this football season and qualified for the playoffs. They were scheduled to play Raleigh's Cardinal Gibbons high school this Friday night. The school administration decided that 1-10 was not worthy of riding all the way from Coinjock(three hours) to Raleigh, lose and then come back home 1-11.

The administration notified the NCHSAA on Monday that they wanted to forfeit the first round game. When the coaching staff told the players they were forfeiting the team protested and along when Currituck was notified they would be fines $1000 for not playing they have now decided they will play in Raleigh Friday.

If there is any thing good that can come from this. There is a movement within the football committee, I have heard of talk that next year the state may go back to four rounds of playoff games and this would help eliminate the 1-10 teams of the world riding all day to get their brains beat out by a 11-0.

Boy wouldn't that improve the playoffs.
