Biggie Legion Game Goes to Post 58

The battle for first place in the North Division of area Legion baseball goes to Post 58. Both teams score once in the first but 58 scored four times in the third to get some breathing room. 58 put a single run on the board in the fourth and Post 13 got that back in the fifth to give 58 a 6-2 lead after five.

Post 58 blew open the game by scoring six times in the sixth and Jeremy Sloop went the distanced on the mound  as Rocky Mount Post 58 guns down Post 13 12-2 in seven innings. Sloop allowed six hits. The wins makes 58 4-0 on division play and sole position of first place.  They are right back in action Thursday at Mt Olive College playing Wayne County.

Thomas Berry had two hits and two rbi.  Tyler Wooten also had two hits in the 13 hit attack for 58 who did not seem sluggish after a week off.  Post 13 added to their misery by committing five errors.

I hope you saw the article in Tuesday Telegram about Thomas Berry.  The Telegram has done a really good job of doing features on the Post 58 players this past couple of weeks.  The article stated that Berry has signed to play at Lander College next year.  Lander is a Division II school out of South Carolina and assistant Post 58 coach "Baseball" Britt Johnson is an assistant coach there.  There is nothing better for a recruiter than to be able to see a recruit every day.

Holy Cow do I have great news.  Cousin Lauren Doughtie who in six Futures Tournaments  this year has made the cut in three of them qualified for the US Women's open last week.  She went to the Sectional qualifying in Sanford at Carolina Trace.  She tied for top honors shooting 145 in her 36 holes.Only four players from Sanford made the Open.

The Open is July 7th-10th in Colorado and if some how or other she could make the cut, she would make more money in the Open than she has in two years on the Futures Tour.  This is her second U S Open appearance.  Her first Cousin Brooks will be in Colorado Springs at the Olympic training  site and plans to be there to support his cousin.

I didn't care one way or the other about who won the NBA title.  I do kind of like Rick Carlyle coach of the Mavericks.  One of the reason I like him is as a guard at Virginia he lead UVA to the Final Four the year after Ralph Sampson graduated That of course would have been 1984.

Yankees Claim Little League Title.

The Championship was on the line Tuesday night as the  Wesley Mens Bible Class Yankees beat the Hester, Moore and Tucker attorneys Phillies 9-4 to claim the City recreation Little league Tournament crown.  The Phillies, this was their second loss in the tournament as they came through the losers bracket  only to lose to the undefeated tournament team Yankees who only played four games never losing in the tournament.

Noah Shrock lead the Yankees with two home runs a solo shot in the first to give the Yankees the lead and then a three run blast that  spurted the Yankees to a 9-2 lead in the 6th inning.  Terrell Porter had a two run homer for the Phillies which cut the lead to 4-2 in the second inning and then Cameron Vick had a two run shot in the bottom of the 6th to give the Phillies their final two runs.

The Yankees were the American League regular season Champs and the Phillies finished second to them in the American but the Phillies knocked over the top seed from the National League the Athletics  to make it to the championship game.

The Senior Little League  Tar Heel all stars players were announced at the end of the game.  Rocky Mount will send an American and National League All Star teams to Knightdale in July for the district tournament.  If either wins the district   the State tournament is back in Hickory this year after all levels of the Tar Heel associations championships were played in Rocky Mount last year.  That was the first time ever that every level of the Tar Heel State titles had ever been all in the same location the same weekend.

The Stretchlon Rookies of the year were announced and Richard Sarmiento awarded the trophies to the best 11 year old player in the 11/12 year old league.  Garrett Killebrew won from the National League and David Harrison won from the American.

Tonight first place will be on the line as Post 58 travels to Fleming Stadium where two area teams with 3-0 marks square off .  Wilson has top Edenton three times so far this season and Rocky Mount has banished Ahoskie three times.  Wilson and Rocky Mount meet twice more during the regular season.  Tonight's first pitch is 7.00pm at Fleming.
