Fike Moves Into First

It's still early but Fike has the early lead in Big East baseball after they beat Rocky Mount 6-4 Tuesday night.  They are 3-1 in conference while Rocky Mount drops to 2-2.  Rocky Mount is home Thursday night as they host Southern Nash.  this game was scheduled for Friday night but the weather forecast is calling for rain late Thursday and Friday morning so it has been moved up a day.  7pm Thursday night please take note*.  In other Big East action Hunt beat Southern Nash 11-2 and Northern Nash had a 7-5 win over Nash central.

North Carolina State beat ECU in baseball Tuesday night 2-0.  Billy Godwin is in a lot of trouble in Greenville as the Pirates are below 500 on the season and there is plenty of grumbling going on from the Pirate faithful.  The former Northern Nash grad  needs to get a winning streak going.  You know there is a new athletic director in town and when you are not one of his picks then a poor season and with the quality of ECU baseball has been for over 30 years this has to be classified as a poor season.

The news conference after the national championship game  coach John Beilein of Michigan admitted that he didn't know how many fouls they had committed and it cost them seconds in the game when they let precious second go off the clock.  The coach has been murdered on talk radio  for his  mistake.  I can assure you John Beilein is my kind of coach.  I can tell you the head coach is the last person who would know what the foul situation is or how many time outs they have left.  That is an assistants job.  The coach didn't throw anybody under the bus and as captain of the Michigan Basketball ship he is in charge of every thing that happens.  I applaud the coach.

This brings on another point.  I think we all fail to realize that athletic events are not won but most of the time lost.  The team that makes the less mistakes wins. If you see a 40 yard run for a touchdown most of the time somebody was not where they were suppose to be on defense.  An open three point shot to win the game is suppose to have somebody covering that guy.  Sporting events are live action.  This is not chess where you have two minutes to react the the previous play.

The desire to help double team in basketball often leaves the open shot from someone not double teamed.  It is decided in practice when certain players get the ball whether  to double team or not.  But, as the clock is winding down and the game on the line sometimes players forget what they are suppose to do in their anxiety
to help out they do the wrong thing.
