Red Hot Gryphons

The past two weeks now the Boys basketball team has beaten the #2 seed Fike Golden Demons twice and the #1 seed Nash Central Bulldogs on their home court.

This is a far cry from the 8-10 team that had lost 10 of 13 games.

Last night the Gryphons wrote themselves an invitation to the conference tournament finals in whipping Fike by 10 at Southwest Edgecombe. Tashawn Mabry was once again big man on campus as he led the Gryphon assault, but one thing is now apparent on this team. Tashawn is not alone in leading this red hot team who have now won 7 in a row.

This is the team we all thought we would see all year. Two victories in the tournament this week push the Gryphons to 15-10 over all and a dance Partner Friday night with the conference regular season champions Nash Central.

Central disposed of the home team SWE to set up the RM-NC finals.

Tonight at 6.00pm the lady Gryphons will try to make it a Friday night Rocky Mount double header as they face Southern Nash in the semi's.

If they ladies win tonight they play in the championship game at 6.00pm Friday and the NC-RM boys game follows at 7.30. If you are planning on going Friday night remember that the gym at SWE holds only about 800 people so you need to be early.

Last night Carolina did just enough to hold off State 89-80. State has really improved. They did not have a stretch where for five minutes they could handle the ball. Carolina had stretches where they scored eight or ten in a row but it wasn't bad ball handling.

Carolina when they are rolling makes it look so easy. I don't know why but I don't think Carolina will win the national championship. They are not that good defensively to rely on defense when the offense is bogged down.

Those of you that know me, know that I pull for all big four schools during the playoffs but Carolina is missing something I just don't know what it is.
