Budget Crunch

We all know that we are in maybe the worse economic period since the great depression. Unemployment continues to hover above ten per cent with no end in sight. Governor Perdue just gave the General Assembly the budget request for 2010-2011 and slashes are across the board.

When the big pair of scissors starts slashing in Nash County very little if any will be to run the sports programs at our high schools. If they already don't they will have to make a profit or there will be no sport. It is coming to that sooner than later. I see the days are near that athletes will have to pay for everything in order to play.

It is sad to see that it may come to that but the best way to slow down the soon to be short falls is attend sporting events of our local teams. We all know that the higher the price to get in the more people will stay home which like raising taxes leads to a short fall sooner than later.

Rocky Mount has both soccer, baseball and tennis could go deep into the playoffs. Some of the gate receipts do come back to home after being split with the NCHSAA and the other teams. In a way it is kind of funny that we want to teach to be good sports. It sure would help our schools if we had several teams to go deep into the playoffs and you are there to watch them every step of the way.

In a way sports help with the crime rate. Our kids stay out of trouble when they are worried about the next game instead of standing on the street corner. They also do better in school when when they play sports over those than don't. It would be a shame to have to trim any sport because we can't afford it. We can't afford not to have sports.

Baseball and Softball are home Thursday hosting Nash Central. Thursday would be a good day to watch any of our teams as they have less than three weeks to go in the regular season.

The conference track and field championships are Monday with Nash Central and Northern as the favorites. This would be a chance to see all of our athletes on the field at the same time.

Thursday I will be at the softball field covering the game for TV. I am sure it will be summer by the time this game hits the air.
