Nail Biter At Fike

The Lady Gryphons played one of the two Big East girl’s basketball teams that had only one conference loss at Fike last night and the Lady Gryphons keep their grip on first place with hard fought 41-39 victory over the Lady Golden Demons. The boys had little trouble in beating the only winless team in the Big East in Fike with an 80-58 victory. These two schools play again Friday night in Rocky Mount.

Tonight the basketball teams are back in action after the makeup games last night at Fike traveling to Hunt. The boys will be playing for their seeding lives tonight as another loss to one of the top two teams would just about eliminate a chance for finishing in the top two positions and getting a bye in the first round of the Big East Tournament which is now only two weeks away.

Since the Gryphons are hosting this year’s tournament you might give both teams the edge in winning the tournaments. The one thing you don’t want to do is play three games to win it instead of two. There is a home field advantage to a certain extent but having to play an extra game is taking away any home field advantage.

This past Saturday Paul Lilley qualified for another event in the indoor track season as he ran the third best half mile time in the state this year. Lilley in a previous meet in early January had qualified for the state meet in the mile run. His two events are very hard to run both at the state just for being able to finish one race and get ready for the next and being able to give that event your best effort. Paul will probably have to decide which one he has the best chance to win.

Now I am hearing that the two indoor facilities that the State uses for the indoor track season is not available this year. Those two facilities are the Greensboro Coliseum and the indoor track at UNC. So if there is no indoor facility available then the State Indoor meet will have to be run outside. I am hearing that there is a chance that the North Carolina runners may go to Virginia and run in the Virginia event if that can be worked out. Right now Lilley and Zikeener Parker are the only two Gryphons that have qualified for any event at the state indoor meet.

The last two days have not been good for Duke Basketball. The men lost by 15 Sunday in New York City and last night the ladies lost at Connecticut. It was the ladies first lost of the season but at one time the score was 38-6.

The reinvigorated Tiger Woods played golf for the first time this season over the weekend. The first two days he played well but over the weekend played like everybody else when they struggle. Woods has lost that advantage that he use to have as to when he hit a bad shot he didn’t worry about it but made the next shot great. He no longer thinks he’s unbeatable and the rest of golf knows it too.

You have got to give it to him while it lasted that for 15 years he was just about unbeatable.
