Fike High School won their first Big East game ever as they stun Southern Nash 34-28 in overtime. Fike had managed to lead off and on the whole game only to be tied at then end of Regulation 28-28. Southern Nash took the ball first in the overtime and fumbled their third play which was recovered by Fike. Fike took three plays to score and send their fans into a frency as if they had won the State Championship
It is the first loss of the season for Southern Nash. It seems obvious to me that the two weeks off for Fike made major strides in preparing while The Firebirds learned a lesson that in Big East football you had better come ready to play.
Nash Central and Rocky Mount lined their players up across the back line of the end zone ten minutes before their game as Rocky Mount paid tribute to fallen Nash Central football player John Stanley. After a moment of silence the Gryphon Dynasty Band played a tribute of music to the Stanley Family.
Once the game started Nash Central controlled the opening drive and scored with 1.47 to go in the first quarter to lead 7-0. Rocky Mount put the ball on the ground 10 tens during the game and Nash Central recovered one of those fumbles at the Gryphon 22 but the Gryphon defense held them to a field goal and a 10-0 lead early in second quarter.
Jalen Hendricks the Bulldog quarterback started but you could tell he was not 100% running with the ball scored on a quarterback sneak with less than 30 seconds to go in the half for a 17-0 Bulldog lead.
Rocky Mount took the second half kickoff and put the ball on the ground at the Bulldog 14 and lost yardage on the play and the Bulldogs held on the drive but three plays later the Gryphons picked off a Hendrick pass and with 1.09 to play in the 3rd quarter Mason Hines scored for the Gryphons and they converted a two point pass to M J Gainey to cut the lead to 17-8.
Nash Central took four plays and went 47 yards to score on the last play of the third quarter with Kalil Mackin getting the last yard. Rocky Mount drove the field and scored with 6.19 to go on a Mason Hines six yard run and he added the two point conversion and the Gryphons side lines is fired up.
4.19 to play in the game Rocky Mount forces Nash Central to punt where a running into the kicker penalty was going to be called on Rocky Mount. However Mike Westry touched the ball on the goal line and after a mad scramble Nash Central scored a touchdown when they fell on the ball in the end zone. As they lined up to kick the extra point the refs had a meeting and ruled since Westry did not have control of the ball and the ball went in the end zone a touch back was ruled and Rocky Mount got the ball on the 20. The running into the kicker penalty would not give Nash Central a first down so Rocky Mount escaped and had a shot to take it the length of the field to try to tie. They manged to get it to the 50 before Nash Central stopped them.
Rocky Mount had more yards than Nash Central 255-249 but Rocky Mount had negative yards on eight plays where they had a bad snap or dropped ball in the backfield. Mason Hines rushed for 168 yards while Khalil Macklin lead the Bulldogs with 89. Final Nash Central 24 Rocky Mount 16.
Over in Death Valley the defense of the Knights continues to play great as Hunt scores four times and never has a scoring drive of over 40 yards. The Northern Offense keeps putting the defense in jeopardy. Hunt shuts out the Knights 28-0.
Now that all the smoke has cleared Fike, Hunt and Nash Central sit a top of the Big East after the first week.

Let's try To Start Conference All Over Again
Today is October third. Friday night October 28th will be the last night of high school football. Barring some odd weather as if we haven't had any this year starting tonight and 25 days from now the season will be over. Seems as if the season is jumbled up but it is the same every year if we start on a Friday night. No one wants to start 0-1 playing on a Monday because a practice day is already gone for the second game coming up on Friday.
Hunt travels to Northern Nash. Southern Nash pays a visit to Fike and their new lighting system. Nash Central comes calling to Rocky Mount and their new PA system. All three games kick at 7pm.
It is still way to early to be jumping on any band wagons but the Detroit Lions are 4-0. Cam Newton is making Panther games very interesting. The big problem for the Panthers is the more he throws the more they lose. Michael Vick is playing like the quarterback that they experts say he really is. Philly Loses at Home to San Fran. The Houston Texans and the Tennessee Titans both look as if they are ready to replace the Manningless Colts in the AFC South.
Poor old Jerry Jones thinks the Cowboys are the glamor team in football. They blow another one yesterday. How many times does it happen you win a game than nobody thinks you can win and the next week you lose. That's Buffalo for you. My slow starting Chargers are 3-1. Pittsburgh looks old. There are leaders and then there is Jay Cutler. He has the worse demeanor both on the field and sidelines of any player in the league. He acts like he doesn't care and that has to wear on teammates.
THE YANKEES LOSE and next get to face Verlander in Detroit. You had better keep a lookout for the Milwaukee Brewers.
Tonight the Stretchlon Sports Show cameras will be at Faith Christian catching the Rocky Mount Academy soccer game then rushing to the NC/RM football game.
