Nash County has four players at last count playing in college summer leagues as well as a few who have returned for their last year of Legion ball.
It is good to see that Tyler Joyner who as a promising freshman at ECU got just a little over an inning pitched in Greenville before his season ended is pitching in the New England Baseball league for the Laconia Muskrats. Laconia is in New Hampshire. The NEBL is comprised of teams from Rhode Island, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine. The furtherest travel is like driving from Rocky Mount to Wilmington.
Tyler has a 1-2 record but his numbers are better than his over all record. He has pitch in over 24 innings allowed seven earned runs but he has struck out 31 batters. Tyler's ERA is a very good 2.56. These are the kind of numbers that we expected from Tyler.
Brian Goodwin who plays for the Harwick Mariners in the Cape Cod league is hitting 319 which is seventh best in the league.
Ben Fish who plays in Wilmington for the Sharks is batting 206 with eight RBI so far this summer. Xavier Macklin is swinging a 184 bat for Asheboro's entry in the Coastal League.
Cameron Ramsey, Mike Smith and Tyler Clark are playing their last year of Legion ball for Post 58.
I ran into Jammie Mitchell yesterday and we were talking ball, of course. He told me after he and Travis Ward were in their motel room after the Babe Ruth World Series several years ago they realized that their group was very special and they both wrote down their opinions of what they thought where those guys on that Babe Ruth Team would be when they turned 21. They have filed those notes away like a time capsule. I would love to be there when they open it in a couple of years.
Post 58 Legion playoffs start Monday night at home against New Bern. This first round series is a two out of three not three of five like I have stated before. The district little league tournaments also crank up next week. Parents will be following their kids all over the map from New Bern to Wendell. I bet you will see a painted window or two on the back of cars.
