The two time defending North Carolina State Champions Wilmington Post 10 has decided to take the long way to the state title this year by losing opening day in Lexington. The first day of the tournament found wet grounds at 9:30 am this morning at Lexington must have gotten that same storm we did last night and the first games were pushed to noon. Gaston beat Wilmington 4-3.
Shelby Post 82 beat Hope Mills by a 3-1 score. The two teams representing Area one which of course is part of Rocky Mount's Coleman Pitt Post 58 area. Tonight High Point knocked off Wayne County 11-8 to put Wayne County in the losers bracket. Post 58 did play Wayne County the first game of the season and if you remember they tied 4-4 in ten innings. That was the game that was called after Adam Bayless went down on the field in the 10th inning.
Post 58 played Garner in a double header in late May. Garner brought only 9 players with them and Garner won game one but Post 58 won the second 10-0. Some of you might have seen Garner play Raleigh in Rocky Mount during the Western Division championship and saw that Garner was a solid team
Tonight in the last game of day one at the state Legion Tournament Garner drew the host team. Always in the state tournament who ever host gets a spot and most of the time that means an easy win for a Garner tonight right? Through the 7th inning Garner finds themselves down 6-2. Three runs in the eighth makes the game interesting as Garner trails 6-5. There will be no comeback tonight as Lexington gets a three run homer in the top of the ninth and Garner now heads to the losers bracket losing 9-5.
Cousin Lauren Doughtie shot her second best round of the year Friday shooting a 68 which is tied for 13th three shots out of the lead after the first round of the SEFCU Tournament in Albany New York. Lauren is in the top 60 on the Symetra Tour in money earnings but in order to make it back to the LPGA tournament she needs to finish in the top ten or better this week. This is a good start but she needs to to climb the leader board the next two days.
