Alone At The Top

Fike has found the net tonight against the Rocky Mount soccer team breaking a seven game scoreless streak by the Gryphon defense. It's not how many you give up but how many do you get and the Gryphons got enough to clinch first place in next week's Big East Soccer tournament beating Fike 4-1. So the good news there is no chance to for a three way tie with losing the draw not even making the playoffs. The Gryphons are in and they are Big East Champs.

The Stretchlon Sports show will be filming Rocky Mount's game in the semi finals which should be against another Nash County school. Fike and Hunt who will be fighting for the #2 seed in state playoffs should be matched up against each other in the other semi final game. Details in the next few days.

Friday is regional tennis day and Rocky Mount sends their top two doubles teams. Lindsey Thomas, Caroline Bell, Caroline Nelson and Elizabeth Thompson will be representing the Gryphons.

Finally two days before the volleyball state playoffs begin the NCHSAA released the brackets with the team that each is playing. Rocky Mount as the #1 seed in the Big East will host Havelock who is the # five seed from the Coastal. Game time is 2.00pm Saturday at the gym. Rocky Mount is 18-5 and Havelock 10-10. The winner will be in the same bracket as South Johnston #2 in Eastern Carolina against the #2 in the Wacamaw West Brunswick. Should Rocky Mount win round one they would host round two.

Big East #2 Hunt takes on the #2 seed from Northeastern Coastal Hertford County. They are 0-16. What in the world are they doing in the playoffs. Luckily for Hunt, Big East has the Priority over Northeastern Caostal and will host HC. Second round may not be so easy for Hunt as they may be match up with unbeaten Triton who is 20-0 and they would play at Triton.

Big East #3 Northern Nash has a terrible draw. They get South Central right out of the box. South Central is 19-4 tall and athletic. Northern Nash is 9-11 on the season.

Finally Big East #4 Nash Central draws Western Harnett the #1 from Cape Fear Valley.

All first round action is Saturday.

Finally it Friday night football.

Since conference started I am only 4-4 and the confusion may continue as all four games might be pick'ems.

Fike at Rocky Mount. The battle for last place, Homecoming at RM. I went to the soccer game Wednesday an only counted 28 players practicing for the Gryphons. They started with around fifty August first and as the losing has mounted those that were there for the glory only have given up and quit. There have been some injuries but Those that are left will be better off without the quitters as they finish the season.

Regardless of who is left Rocky Mount has played just good enough to lose. They play another team which if you held up a mirror they look just like each other. Rocky Mount wins Homecoming 14-6.

Hunt at Southern Nash. Northern showed everyone in the conference last week smack Southern in the face and they have no answer. Southern needs desperately to hold on to the ball, don't give Hunt easy chances. I am not sure if Hunt is as physical as Northern. Northern lost at Hunt. Southern lost an Northern. Do you see a home field advantage trend. I just can't see Southern winning this one. Hunt 21- Southern 13

I have been recruited this week and will be doing the play by play on WHIG-TV and their game of the week is Nash Central at Northern Nash. Central has played both of the bottom feeder teams and Northern has played both of the preseason favorites. Now with new momentum will Nash Central be able to move the ball on Northern. This is a Hugh conference game for the winner. Northern 26 Nash Central 14

Tarboro is ranked #1 in 2-A football this week and they play host to SouthWest Edgecombe. Tarboro has had a couple of close calls but not in the big games. I just don't think SWE is quite as good as last year. The game is at Tarboro. Tarboro 28 SWE 22.

There are so many good games why not go to one?

Change Of Plan

One of the biggest problem of trying to keep up with scores and standing is knowing all the scores. That period of rain we had a couple of weeks back jumbled thing up even more and found out last night that Fike actually beat Hunt in soccer last week to throw Rocky Mount in the lead.

Last night in what was suppose to be ther final game of the season like Northern-Rocky Mount is suppose to be for us, Hunt beat Fike in over time to set up a possible mess in Big East Soccer. Rocky Mount can solve any messy issues by beating Fike today and take the #1 seed and regular season title with a victory.

If Fike wins this can create a three way tie with RM-Hunt-Fike and looking forward to the playoffs the team that winds up seeded third will definately have a road of horror to survive early in the tournament. Those of you that remember the fiasco that occurred several years ago for Northern Nash football when only two teams went to the playoffs and they had one of the best records in the state and sat home after picking the longest straw. It will not be quite be as bad as back then but, boy does tonight's soccer game at Fike get big or what.

The Chick-Fil-A in the Walmart parking lot is is doing the contest again this year between Nash Central and Northern Nash as who can raise the most money this week. Every sale made you tell them you want the profits to go to which ever school you pull for. Last year RM and Northern were in it. Northern has announced if they win all monies they would receive will go to Terry Pittman the Red Oak Middle school student who had the spinal cord injury about six weeks ago. Be nice if Nash Central also gave their winnings to him. Even if you don't pull for either school tell them you want to give it to Northern Nash and support Terry Pittman

We are doing a live Stretchlon Sports Show Sunday night. The Renegades a 12 and under baseball team has qualified for the tournament held annually that happens at the Baseball Hall Of Fame in Cooperstown New York. You will get to meet those players and they will be talking about their fund reaising efforts to get them all there next summer.

I am trying to also line up some updated information on both Terry Pittman and Colt Brake the Rocky Mount Academy player who suffered the spinal cord injury just a couple of weeks ago. If all falls in place we may talk to some family members or school officials during the show giving the latest information available on both players.
