Conference Play Starts

Nash Central and rocky Mount both were 2-4 in their non conference schedule. Both seemed destined for the second division in the Big East. They opened play tonight in conference action and for the winner they now have a shot a the upper level of the conference while the loser had better start thinking about basketball.

Tied 7-7 at the half Nash Central score two second had touchdowns in the third quarter to get a 14 point lead which was too much for the Gryphons to overcome. Nash central beat the Gryphons for the first time in their history 27-14.

The Gryphons had trouble stopping Dequan Battle who rushed for 136 yards on 14 carries and the Gryphons struggled for every inch they could make in losing for the fifth time in seven tries this season.

I doubt whether either of these two teams have more than one more victory coming and that should happen when they play Fike. Nash Central get them next week and if they could go to 2-0 they just might have some momentum going to make a playoff push.

Rocky Mount now must hit the road again traveling to Hunt and Hunt will be hard to stop with their grind it out football. Rocky Mount fails to make big plays when they need it but came up with several bad ones at the wrong time.

Preseason favorite Southern Nash took on Fike in Bailey and had little trouble as the Firebirds roll Fike 62-19. The Firebirds did about anything they wanted to do when they wanted to do it.

In the only game in the conference between upper division teams Hunt held serve in beating Northern Nash 28-10. This gives Hunt the early advantage between Hunt, Northern and Southern as they have beaten one of the upper level teams. Next week Southern and Northern play at Northern. Much like Nash Central could be 2-0 beating the two easiest teams in the league if Northern were to lose to Southern then they would have lost both games against the best two in the league. The the Northern- Southern game is hugh for the conference crown.

Last week Kinston fell asleep after having upset SouthWest Edgecombe when they lost to Beddingfield. Tonight Beddingfield proved that the victory over Kinston was no fluke at they hung tough with SWE with the Cougars winning 14-0.

Tarboro may have gotten caught looking ahead to the Kinston Game next week as they just do sneak by Greene Central 21-20.

After the first week of Big East football Hunt, Southern Nash and Nash Central have the lead at the the quarter mile pole in this two mile race the the championship.
