Northern Finishes Third In Cross Country

The State Cross  Country Championships  were held in Kernersville an if you are familiar with the topography of that area of the state is considered much higher elevation Than the Rocky Mount area.

Because of some non flat running most runners from the flat lands times are slower during the state championships while those teams from the west, it doesn't effect.  Today the Eastern champions Northern Nash has finished third in the state scoring 114 points.  The defending Champions Weddington took top honors.

The top Knight Runner  was Daniel Belton who finished 6th with a time of 16:47.  Finishing 11th  overall was Coleman Cherry in a time of 16:58.  Steven Whitehead finished  15th running a time of 17:12.  Jordan Richardson finished 45th running 17:48 and Northern the fifth runner scoring points was Tyric Hill who finished 79th.

The Battling Bishops of North Carolina Wesleyan won their third game in a row besting Lagrange Georgia 48-31.They finish their season next Saturday at home in Bishop Stadium at 1pm.

The girls state cross country championships the only local girl runner was Rocky Mount's  was Mary McCall Leland.  Leland made it to the state after finishing 12th best overall last week in the Eastern Regional and in Kernersville she finished 80th running a time of 22:35.

Southern Nash lost to Lee County 9-0 in the second round of the boys soccer.  Hunt's second round match moved to Monday.

The seedings are out for the football playoffs:

Rocky Mount  9-2 is seeded third in 3A.  According to the average daily attendance Rocky Mount with 1281 students is the first team in 3A where the last school in 3AA is 1284.  The Gryphons will host Walter Williams 5-6 from Burlington.

Southern Nash 8-3 is seeded ninth in 3A and will hit the road going to West Craven 9-1.  Fike 6 -5 is seeded 12th travels to Topsail  5-6. Hunt  8th seed 8-3 the 4th Big East in the playoffs is playing in the 3AA will host Lee County 8-3.

You know the NCHSAA has to have some type controversy and it has happened to SouthWest Edgecombe 10-1.  They are in the 2A level and are seeded number two and will host conference foe Farmville Central 5-6.  Beddingfield 6-5 lost to SWE Friday  night will play as the number five seed and host South Granville 4-7.

Tarboro 10-1 will be the second seed in 1AA will host Hiede Trask 2-9.  North Edgecombe 5-5  1A loser of four straight will be seeded 11th and head to Pamlico 5-5.
