History Of The Ryder Cup

We have a history in this country when we have sporting events and compete against the world we want to win everything.  Just let us lose a Olympic Basketball Gold Metal with a bunch of college players and we will send Michael Jordan and company the next time to show you.

The Ryder Cup was started in 1927 when America hosted the best Golfers from Great Britian and up until WWII we won every time.  By 1973 we dominated the Ryder Cup so much that it was be decided  to add European players to at least give us a challenge.  There was one unexpected event that happen from the Ryder Cup adding Europe was the European  Golf Tour pick up in quality and now may have better players than the PGA tour. One reason in the last 20 years European golf has improved is coverage by the Golf Channel, letting more people see it in Europe and if you are young a want to be a golfer.

The PGA has more money available but there are more great players in Europe than in the US.  So one of the reasons we not longer dominant the Ryder Cup is we no longer only have to beat Great Britian but all of Europe.  That's almost like Greenville Rose playing North Edgecome but now Rose  has to beat both DH Conley  and South Central all on the same team.

Here is another failure of US Golf.  There is no longer a go for broke player like Arnold Palmer or Tiger Woods who played to make every shot.  There is so much money on tour these days that players settle for hitting the ball in the middle of the green instead of trying to hit the ball in the hole. In other words there is so much money to finish fourth in a tournament why do I risk a bad shot which might drop me to tenth.  Most tournaments these days fourth makes 200,000 which ain't a bad week of work. I know a gulp and a great shot might make you a winner and win a million this week but a bad shot I will only win 50,000 for tenth.

So the bottom line is we have better competition to win the cup and PGA players aren't use to playing in competition where every shot could get you in the losers column.  The PGA tour is you have to make shots to shoot about 275 shots in a weekend to win where the Ryder Cup every shot either you win this hole or fall behind.

Quite frankly I like it when there is a challenge and it means you had to work your butt off to win.  Not a whole lot of challenge  to just show up and be guaranteed a win.  Our only problem we can't send Michael Jordan and company  to fix this losing.  We need to improve our golfers we send.  Europe sure has.

Mr. Yankee Calls It Quits

The  20 year baseball career of Derek Jeter is over.  If you look at his career numbers he has over 3,400 hits which should be enough by itself to make the Hall Of Fame.  His career 310 batting average  is pretty good too.

If there was ever a player who could deliver when the spotlight was on it is Derek Jeter.  He was steady but never a great defensive shortstop. He did however win five Gold Gloves.   He always seemed to do the right thing.  Remember the World Series game when Jeter flipped the ball to home to cut down a runner when he was in foul territory on the first base side ten feet from home plate.  What in the world is the short stop doing there?  He just knew where the ball was going to be on a throw from the outfield.

Despite being a Hall of Famer in waiting the Yankees will be a better team next year because they have become old.  If you look at New York City teams and I say that as the Giants, Knicks and Yankees the news media if you play for those teams make you great and those sports organization hold on to players too long because of media pressure and fans expectations from media hype.

The Dallas Cowboys need to keep Demarco Murray Healthy.  This newly discovered running game made them look like world beaters last night.  We all know the Cowboys will finish 8-8.  Isn't this the way the NFC East goes.  Every four games another team looks unbeatable and the team that was 2-6 wins the division.

In case you haven't heard the Packers and the Bears did not punt in their game yesterday.  It is only the second time in NFL history  that there were no punts in a game.  The last time that happened was 1990 when Buffalo and San Fransico met and the quarterbacks were Jim Kelly and Steve Young.  They both passed for over 400 yards   And 1100 total yards.  The score was 34-31.

Sunday the San Diego Chargers rushed for 42 yards on 20 attempts which is awful.  No problem as Philip Rivers throws for 377 yards  and three touchdowns .  His top two rushers out with injury, he was sacked twice and hit on several other attempts Rivers manages to avoid the rush and for the 24th straight game throws a touchdown pass which is a San Diego a Charger Franchise record .

Gurley Continues To Be A Monster

Todd Gurley goes over 200 yards rushing for the first time in his college career but unless Georgia comes up with a defense Georgia will not win enough games to help Todd win the Heisman even though he has shown through four games he is the best player in college  football.  Gurley had over 100 yards rushing in the fourth quarter alone.
Those of you that thought N C State wasn't that good after   the so called poor schedule had better take notice now.  They showed today with good quarterback play  they can play with anyone.  The first time this year Florida State's offense looked like last year's national championship team.  However  The Pack rushed for way too many yards on Florida State for them to make it to the National Championship game. As much improvement as the Wolfpack has shown you could just see they didn't have enough speed to play with FSU.

The Battling Bishops went on the road Saturday and won at Ferrum  34-30.  Jacque Alston rushed for more yards than Todd Gurley 218 and lead they way.  NCW now stands at 2-2 on the 2014 football season.  They are home next Saturday at 1pm.  If you have been by the Sports Complex lately you will notice there are signs calling the Football stadium at the sports Complex as Bishops Stadium.

Just about everyone in the area has completed their non-conference schedule, there will be a big game next Friday as Tarboro travels to Southern Nash.  Big East fans probably can look and see the top three being Fike, Hunt and Northern Nash.  The bottom tier looks like Southern Nash, Rocky Mount and Nash Central.  What order is up for debate.
North Carolina has scored 76 points the last two games but were outscored by 44.  You know ECU had a defense like this in Ruffin McNeil's first season in Greeenville.  This is not the first year for Larry Fedora in Chapel Hill.
Wake Forest and Duke both had no offense at all in their losses on Saturday.  Duke offense the fourth quarter was throw into double coverage and hope.
Finally this fall Pat and I have followed Campbell volleyball as we have passed through Texas, California, Arizona, Virginia and Maryland. Friday night the Lady Camels in front of about 700 fans at home in Buies Creek won their conference opener beating their top rival High Point in four sets. Morgan's freshman year the Lady Camels lost all 14 conference games and last year under new coach Greg Goral were 6-8 in the Big South. That did not get a top eight spot in and a conference tournament invite. The Lady Camels look as if they will be middle of the Big South and if they are in the conference Tournament we will add South Carolina to our road travels as the conference tournament is at Coastal Carolina in Conway. Look out Mytrle Beach here we come.

All Four Public Nash County Schools On the Road

Rocky Mount High School scored a touchdown in the first and second quarter to take a 14-0 lead on The Hawks of Triton High.  Juane Sanders scored from five yards out to put the Gryphons on the board in the first and Nick Bynum scored in the second on a 3yarder to give the Gryphons a 14-0 lead in the second.  Triton had a eleven yard run by Juwan Thompson to cut the Gryphon lead to 14-7 at the half.

Bynum scored again in the third to give the Gryphons a two touchdown advantage and Chase Miller added all three extra points as the Gryphons hold off the Hawks 21-7.  Rocky Mount rushed for 133 yards in the game while Triton had 146.  The stats were close during the game as Triton passed for 31 yards while Josh Carter and Forest Bell combined for 67 giving the Gryphons a 200 to 177 lead in total yardage.  The Gryphons go to 4-2 heading to a week off before conference play starts two weeks from tonight at Nash Central.

Speaking of Nash Central the Bulldogs had plenty to worry about tonight as Hillside shuts out the Dogs 47-0 to add the Nash Central's misery in losing their 19th straight game.

Northern Nash made a trip down I-95 just a little shorter than the Gryphons did stopping in Smithfield to play the Spartans of Smithfield Selma. Seems as Randy Raper Knights are primed for Big East play as Northern dominates SSS 42-0.

Can't wait to hear about this one as Southern Nash made a trip to Ayden to take on Ayden-Grifton and this game comes down to a missed extra point.  Can't wait to hear whether it is a missed kick or if AG missed a two point try but the Firebirds win 7-6.

Rocky Mount Academy continues to roll as they smother Lawrence 64-8.  Seems as if every year fewer and fewer teams are playing eight man football.  The Eagle success recently bringing more players out for football might be time to make the jump to 11 man.

As expected North Edgecombe had little trouble with Kipp Pride winning 52-8.

The one game win streak for Rocky Mount Prep is over as SE Halifax manhandled the Jags  58-8

Hunt rolled over Beddingfield 42-12 and I'm interested in this score Fike 41- South Johnston 35.  Only picked seven games this week and went 7-0.

Last Chance To Prepare For Conference

Last week went 7-2 for the second week in a row to run my over all record for this high school now stands at 35-10.  Several teams need to get themselves in order while several just need to refine what is working.  Limited schedule this week as both Tarboro and SouthWest Edgecombe are off

Rocky Mount@Triton:  Two years ago when these two signed to play each other both needed each other for a quality non conference game.  Not this year as Triton is winless and after what Rocky Mount has faced the last two weeks they need to play a quality team to get their house in order. A romp will not do them any good.  If this one is close then Rocky Mount has big problems.  Gryphons 35 Triton 13

Rocky Mount Prep@ SE HAlifax:  Two wins on the season but three will not come this week as SEH will host and take down the Jags.  SEH 32 Prep 16

Northern Nash @Smithfield Selma:  I like it when conference foes take on the same teams that others have played. Last week Fike played SSS and this week Northern.  I think Northern gets settle for conference with another big win.  Northern 44 SSS 13

Beddingfield @Hunt:  This  is big one in Wilson County.  So far Hunt hasn't played to the level we consider Hunt like while Beddingfield lost by 25 to Fike.  This will be closer.  Hunt 26 Beddingfield 20.

Nash Central @ Hillside:  Hillside has been picked to be one of the best in 4-A the last two years and they have never quite gotten to that level of superior.  Despite that they are plenty good to handle Nash Central who has proven to be a bottom feeder again this year.  Hillside 52-Nash Central 20

South Johnston @Fike:  Not close at all Fike 53 SJ14

Lawrence Academy @ RMA : The Eagles soar again as they take down the visitors from Bertie County.  49-14.

Just about all the Big East teams will be off next week as two weeks the conference plays starts for them.  As far as the Big East is concerned looks like Fike is the team to beat as thought and Hunt and Northern chasing close behind.  Question marks remain about Rocky Mount and Southern while Nash Central needs to have something good to happen to them

Bad Week For A Bye

If I was Ruffin McNeil I would want to play somebody this week after winning as Carolina calls it ECU's Super Bowl.  Two weeks off before a Poor SMU team might not be the best thing for the Pirates resting on their laurels. Last week had a mediocre 6-4 record losing both games played in Rocky Mount to extend my college pick record to 36-10 for the season.

Congratulations to Shaun Draughn from Tarboro high extending his life in the NFL after being dropped by the Bears.  The San Diego Chargers picked him up Wednesday to replace injured  Danny Woodhouse and Ryan Matthews.  Draughn has played in a total of 22 NFL games to date having played on special teams in the Bears first two games this year. His career so far he has made the teams he has played for as a special teams player with back up running back where he has been able to lumber for 256 career rushing yards.  Unless you have Direct tv NFL package should see the Chargers a lot on tv after this week.  They play the lowly Jacksonville Jags so no National coverage this week.

Western Michigan @ Virginia Tech:  The Hokies need to beat somebody and it might as well be W Michigan.  36- 22

Colorado State @ Boston College: Here's one that I know nothing about the Rams.  This game is as BC so I pick them  36-28

Akron @ Pitt:  This is one of those games at the end of year you can't afford to lose.  Pitt 37-13

Florida State @ NC State:  I think the Pack is better than what people realize and I don's see FSU # 1 for long.  Just quite can't pull the trigger for N C State but I think this is a great game.  FSU 26 Pack 23

Kent State @ Virginia:  Hoos all the way  44-14

Wake Forest @ Louisville:  Have you ever noticed that the Deacs win games when you don't think they have a chance, but not this week   36-18 the Cards.

NC @ Clemson:  Who can win a game when both teams should be spitting nails after the losses last week.  Clemson gave one away while Carolina gave way.  Clemson 35 Carolina 24

Duke @ Miami:  Might be the hardest game in the country to pick this week.  I believe in CUT  Duke 38 Miami 34

Notre Dame @ Syracuse:  If Maryland can beat the Cuse so can the Irish.  37-23

N C Wesleyan @ Ferrum:  The Battling Bishops are hard to figure out.  Ferrum 32-NCW21

NFL Good Week Of Picks

Last week went  13-3 to jump  to 33-15 on the year. Picked road teams Chargers and Steelers beating undefeated on the road.   Six teams start the week off process so there is only 13 games coming up this week including the unnessary game in London.  Here we go looking for a perfect week.

The lowly Giants come to Washington to face  the much improved offense of the Redskins but look there is also the defensive side to every team.  I think Skins win in DC or Landover wherever Fed Ex Field is.  31-17

Green Bay at Chicago.  What is wrong with Green Bay? They have the look of a team that once they put it together could be trouble for every one.  But, right now they look like a machine needing oil.  Bears at home 26-23.

Buffalo at Houston.  On the road lost to the Giants,  This is a real flip a coin game.  This game will tell us a lot about Buffalo.  I can't put money on Emanuel on the road but the Bills have a defense.  Low scoring  Houston 19 Buffalo 12.

Tennessee at Indy:  Tennessee just can't score enough to win this game Colts 41 Tenn 21

Carolina at Baltimore:  I'm still not sold on Cam even when he's healthy.  He has type injuries he  keeps playing will not be healthy this year.  D will keep it close but Baltimore is my pick 26-17

Detroit at Jets:  Which Lions team shows up? Which Jets team shows up?  Detroit wins 17-12.

Tampa Bay at Pittsburgh:  Tampa will be better with Mike Glennon at quarterback their only problem
Is Tampa is not very good. Pittsburgh 34 Tampa 20

Miami at Oakland:  look out the Raider nation wins this one 23-20.

Jacksonville at San Diego: My only worry about this game is will the Chargers lose one they ought to win and spoil their start against quality teams.  Jax is a breeze if Chargers show up. 35-13 Chargers

Philadelphia at San Fransico: Frisco doesn't look like the power team they have been lately.  Philly scores but they give up a lot too. oh boy, who to pick in this one?  I'll takes Niners but don't know why 32-27.

Falcons at Vikings:  I think the Vikings are playing ok or better than everyone thinks.  Atlanta needs a  win as so Far New Orleans not playing well and Panthers have a five week stretch of contending  teams.  A win on the road and it might be the Falcons who are the NFC South's best team.  Don't think so Viking 24 ATL 20

New Orleans at Dallas: Don't know yet about the Saints but if the Boys want to be more than a win one lose one team they need this one.  Saints keep the Boys being the Boys  37-24

New England at KC:  So far Pats not very impressive and KC  is acting better than expected.  This game will tell us about Brady and company.  KC 27 New England 23

The NFL is a league where the best team is only a touchdown better than the worse in most cases games come down to the one that wants it the most.  It is hard to bet against a team that is desperate over a team that is fat and happy.  Find it hard to see any team in the league being better than 12-4 but somewhere there will be somebody that will be 13-3 or better.

At Least A Few Moments Without Ray Rice Talk

I told you Friday night of our trip to University of Maryland Eastern Shore to follow Campbell volleyball over the weekend.   Yes we found a motel room for Friday night and we made a decision to come home Saturday night after volleyball which ended around 8:30 pm.   By the way Campbell won the tournament and heading to this weekend conference play starts they stand 8-7 having lost to four teams in the volleyball top 50.

So at 8:30 we head home to Rocky Mount which is about a 4 hour and 45 minute trip.  We had to stop in Franklin Va. To get 2.99 a gallon gas so we pull in the driveway at 1:40 am.  I did an unforgivable and did not go to church Sunday so by the time I got up the NFL pregame shows are on all the channels.  It didn't take long to tire of the Ray Rice talk.  Please Sunday is game day lets stick to football instead of who lied, who knew and who knew what when.  I really at this point am ready to rid the Ray Rice talk about the same as all the political ad lies all over TV.  I turn off the football shows to watch a  1950 black and white movie.

The football was worth watching as for almost all the games I didn't hear the name Ray Rice once.  We live in the moment these days and if the Super Bowl was Sunday I think Phoenix would represent the NFC and at this point the AFC is more wide open.

I don't think New England will be around by the conference championship game.  Indy gives up too many points,  despite losing to Seattle I can see the Denver D is better but there is no way their offense can have the year they had last year. I see San Diego giving everyone in the AFC trouble.  Cincy looks as good as anybody but I need to see more when the tough games start. This is of course  only week three  so next week everything will completely change.

I find it hard to believe having heard some of the comments coming from the Carolina football players after the A Stomping they took.  This game means more  to ECU than us.  It's their Super Bowl.  College players need to realize that it is a privilege to play college football and when injury can strike on any play and your college career could end they need to act as if every game is their Super Bowl.

Comments like these are some of the reason you hear people say ABC anybody but Carolina.  There is an attitude in Chapel Hill that they are better than everyone else and I don't know how you can become better until you admit that you had your head handed to you on a silver platter.  It is obvious  since Mack brown left that Carolina football is an elite program right?  Until they humble themselves Carolina will be an also ran  because until you admit we are not as good as we think they will never get better.

The Futures  Tour season ended Sunday and Cousin Lauren Doughtie finished 49th on the year leaving her to hope to make the LPGA in November when they have a qualifying school when only 4 or 5 out of 144 will make the tour.  Her scoring average was 73.48 while the top money winner averaged 71.22.  Even with our hopes of being on the LPGA tour 73.48 will not cut it so it will be better to come back to the Futures Tour next year.

It's Time To Regroup

If you are a member of the Gryphon and Tar Heel football teams today you have to take long looks at yourself.  Both teams lacked defense.  Both have major issues to take care of quick.

The Rocky Mount Gryphons can be given a pass for the effort against Greenville Rose.  If you recall I did mention late that Rose put their first team back in the game long after the outcome was decided and why in the world would they do that unless there was something during the game that Rose felt like sticking it to the Gryphons.  I certainly don't think that's very smart by Rose risking injury.

Fast forward to Friday night and the Gryphons have 15 penalties including the coaching staff.  There is no other way to say it but the Gryphons lacked discipline when the game doesn't  go their way.  Coach Battle has vowed to work on that at practice Monday.  This is the sixth week of the season and kind of late to start on something that should have been part of your coaching from day one.

Larry Fedora has been able to scores points since he has come to Chapel Hill but the Tar Heels embarrassed the entire Tar Heel nation giving up 70 against a team they don't consider a rival but you had better believe the Pirate Nation does.  Oh yeah they let those guys from the east to paste more than 50 on them last year.

You have to look no further than lasts years Super Bowl to see that great offenses can be stopped by by a great defense.  This world we live in now of high scoring offenses have only one problem when they score quickly is the other teams gets the ball quickly too and then you need to stop them.  If Carolina ever wants to be a great team they need to do what Mack Brown did and and become a great defense.  If the other side doesn't score you don't have to score that many to win.  Fans come to see winners and as long as you win fans will come.

All of you know that I am Philip Rivers fans and it looks like for the first time since his first year as an NFL starter the Chargers have a defense that will allow Rivers and company to make a real run at a deep run in the playoffs.  There is no doubt that allowing Rivers to call plays  at the line of scrimmage after looking at coverages is made for him. So far the three teams the Chargers have played they are a combined 7-2 and the two were administered by the Chargers.

The world we live in where you can go on line and see the daily interviews  done by your favorite team and I like what I hear from Mike Mccoy the Charger head coach.  He preaches discipline something that the Chargers have lacked in the past.  Any team has to hope they stay away from injuries to their vital players.  If the Chargers stay healthy I like their chances.

Great Day To Be A Pirate

My early years in life before you had to buy season tickets I spent many Saturdays in Ficklin Stadium.  The Names of Zack Valentine, Mike Weaver, Sam Harrell and Ruffin McNeil spewed from the Pirate PA during at the time the Pat Dye era.

I liked Mcneil not only because of his play but there was something about the PA way of saying Ruffin McNeil.  I guess for me it was having a last name first kind of deal.  Even though I loved McNeil for his play at ECU I had my doubts of bringing a defensive coach from Texas Tech  to Pirateland because at the time Tech had to score 50 to win most games.

Five years into the McNeil era the Pirates stand with a excellent chance of not losing another game this season  but they will be coming off the greatest day in a Pirate history.  There have been many great wins in Ficklin-Dowdy but yesterday now will be the game that every Pirate fan will always tell they were there whether they were or not.

Most were there to witness the stomping of a life time in a Pirate Land.  Last week the Pirates went to Virginia Tech who is still living off memories instead of reality.  The Pirates win there last  week tempered somewhat with Georgia Tech winning in Blacksburg yesterday.  The Pirate win over Carolina will only be impressive if Carolina wins their division not if they wind up 5-7 or 6-6.

You have heard me speak of this before that yes ECU falls into the category of a wanna-bee where they dream of being  an Alabama type program and the weeks after great victories fall to the nobodies of the world And all college D 1 programs in North Carolina fall in to this area.  Today maybe after the greatest day in regular season Pirate football history the Pirates are on the threshold of taking a step to get beyond a wanna-bee.

Today the Pirate nation can dream of by the end of the season hearing the Pirates in the discussion of maybe be considered for the the football playoffs.  The problem the Pirates have now as there is nobody left on the schedule that could add to the impression needed with the selection committee.  There are plenty left that could knock them off the consideration list.

All the way back to the days of Clarence Stasavich the Pirates have been a football school.  Twice in the 60's they played in the Tangerine Bowl when that was a bowl game for small colleges.  The Pirates stand on the verge of a January 1 Bowl game.  Don't let up keep pouring it on a Pirates.

Swinging Of The Pendulum

I think if we are all truthful with ourselves we know the the art of running fast, shooting the basketball and hitting the baseball when we find out our children can do it early on in life is a fast track to glory.  When ever any child or even in college steps out of line our discipline is pat them on the back and say don't do that again.

Those that make it to professional sports after all the years of never having to miss a game because their transgressions they think they can do anything they want.  Athletes who are over paid and now live a life of nobody is going to tell me no.

We have seen recently in the NFL that never telling them no has lead to child abuse, wife beating and seems forever drug usage.  Roger Goddell has for several years punished players for drug use but now those punishments are not strong enough.  You and I know if you get a DWI and call in to work and say I'm in jail be there soon your desk will be cleaned out as soon as you arrive.

The problems facing the NFL now were not started by the NFL just like concussions were not started at the NFL level, they were there back in midget the ball too.  If we are to clean up sports then we must do more than suspend a player for a game because he stands up in a student union on a table and yells obscenities.  Kick him off the team, take away his scholarship..

We all know that Ray Rice had hit his wife in the elevator but Rice can help us win so let's act like we know nothing about it.  Sounds a lot like Rocky Mount when nobody knows nothing about who fired the shots.  These are society issues that must be dealt with the very first time a player  steps out of line in the seventh grade.

We have some cleaning up to do.  Northern Nash beat Southern Vance 47-0.  I think they could have scored 70 but the running the clock rule gave mercy to everybody plus Northen called off the dogs.

Tarboro lost at Roanoke Rapids 22-20

Rocky Mount Academy beat  Community Christian 62-0 and North Edgecombe beat Weldon 32-6.

Gryphons Defenseless

Last week Rocky Mount could not stop the passing attack of Rose high school.  Tonight the Gryphons could not stop the Cougar running game lead by Devontrelle Hyman.  All the Gryphons saw from Hyman was the dirt flying from his cleats as he  chewed up the Gryphons.  Hyman rushes near three hundred yards as SouthWest beats Rocky Mount 35-21.

After giving up only 7 points during their first three games against questionable quality teams this year The Gryphons have now given up 92 points in the last two.  The Gryphons lose their second straight  and fall to 3-2 while SWE playing their top two rivals back to back improve to 3-2.

The losing streak continues as a road trip to Beddingfield produces Nash Central's 18th straight lost as the Bruins rebound from the licking they took from Fike last week winning 30-7.

Fike continues to impress as they put more than fifty on the board beating Smithfield Selma 55-10

Out in Wilson County  Curtituck is involved in their second straight week  in a game where at least 50 points are scored.  Last week Currituck produced more than sixty, tonight they give up 54 as Hunt wins 54-14.

At this writing don't have a final score in the Northern Nash game at Southern Vance.  Looks as if it won  't matter as the clock is running with Northern ahead by more than 40.  Looks as if the Knights are beginning to put both sides of the ball together.

Cousin Lauren Doughtie is tied for 42nd in the Futures Tour "tour championship in  Daytona Beach.  Looks like she will finish in the top 50 which will keep her in the Futures Tour again  next year.

Tonight I come to you from Salisbury Maryland as we once again on the road with Campbell volleyball.  Had no idea would be here as thought we had to work on Saturday but cancelled late Thursday afternoon.  Rolled out of the driveway at 5am this morning with no hotel for the night.

Thank goodness for the internet while driving down the highway.  Wife Pat found an available room at Laquinta Inn while driving on the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel.  Two matches today and two Saturday.

Lot OnThe Line Saturday

The Pirates of ECU have the Tar Heels coming to town on Saurday and this just might be one of the best games ever between the two schools.  ECU seems on a roll from last year till now and the Tar Heels seem capable of rolling up points.  The problem for North Carolina is they may not be able to stop the Pirates enough to win.  ECU 42 North Carolina 35

The WolfPack take on the church of Presbyterians the week before they meet Florida St.  Pack may post 50 over the Blue Hose who are no bigger in size as NCW. Pack 56 Blue Hose  0.

The Clemson Tiger go to Florida State absent their quarterback for a half.  This is an interesting game as FSU has  not played like number one team.  I'm taking the Noles in a close one.  28-26

The battle of the Techs Georgia Tech visits Virginia Tech  and the gobblers gobble the Rambling Wreck.  26-20.

The College football game right here in Rocky Mount has Benedict College from Tennessee taking on Elizabeth City State.  ECSt 36 BC 23

Here is an interesting game as Maryland travels to Syracuse.  I hate to do it but the Terps win on the road. 31-22.

Maine at BC:  if they can handle the men of Troy no problem with Maine. BC 44 -14.

The Black Knights of Army visit Wake.  This is two teams of equal value.  USMA 23 Wake 17

Tulane at Duke:  Hard to pick against the way they are playing right now.  Duke. 48 Tulane 23.

Last week went 9-4 to run my college picks to 30-6.  Have started the week 1-0 after the Battling a Bishops lost last night at the Sports Complex 31-28

Non-Conference Almost Over

We head into the next to the last week for most of their non-conference schedule and many games this week leave us much to ponder.  went 7-2 last week to run my season record to 28-8

Rocky Mount @SouthWest Edgecombe:  Rose passed at will and the Gryphons had no answer.  This week a 180 degree  turn-a-round as the Gryphons meet up with the run happy Cougars.  If there is one good point for the Gryphons they scored more points on Rose than anyone else has done.  Gryphons 34 SWE 22

Northern Nash @ Southern Vance:  This should be another chance for the Knights to show everyone that their offense is capable against anyone.  Northern 35 Southern Vance 16

Tarboro @ Roanoke Rapids: The Vikings non conference schedule is as good as anyone around as they have taken on larger schools and have proven to be as good as anybody in the area.  Tarboro wins again  26-19

Currituck @ Hunt:  Hunt headed east last week and  came back with their heads on a platter.  This week Currituck heads west but last week they put 60 on the board.  Doubt they get any where close to that this week.  Hunt 38 Currituck 23

RMA@ Community Christian:  I think this will be a game if the Eagles want 80 they can get it.  Don't think the need for the first string to play after the half.  RMA 62 Community Christian 12

Rocky Mount Prep@ Kipp Pride:  They already have one win under their belt this year over Pride and I think the second one comes Friday  RMP 33 KP  16

Nash Central @ Beddingfield:  Beddingfield was manhandled by Fike but this is at the other end of the Big East food chain  Beddingfield 35 Nash Central 20.

Fike @ Smithfield Selma:  Over what they use to be SSS has improved but not enough to take out one of the Big Dogs of Big East.  Fike 42 SSS24

North Edgecombe @ Weldon:  If North Edgecombe is as good as they have shown thus far this season this one has to be a no doubter.  Warriors 26 Weldon 13

We will end our high school picks by moving over to the first game of the week to be played at the sports complex  tonight when NCW host Christopher Newport.  Newport is not as good as they have been lately but good enough.  CNU  34 NCW24

Can We See Any Trends After Two Weeks

Last week I got 11 of 16 games right in the NFL. Predicted  the Chargers, would win but missing on those Cowboys.  Two weeks into the season I stand at 20-12.  All the teams 2-0 or 0-2 have no idea right now where they will stand by week eight.  So let's try once again to see what's going to happen in week three.

Tampa Bay at Atlanta:  Interesting game to start the week off.  I think both teams are decent but short week I'll take the Falcons 27-17.

San Diego at Buffalo:  West coast team heading east to play at 10 am west coast time.  The last three years  Buffalo has started 2-0 and has not made playoffs yet.  I think the Chargers just might be best team since a Rivers arrived.  In order to moved up to elite status they must win these type road games.  Chargers 27 Bills 23

Titans at Cincinnati:  The Titans let me down last week so I ain't picking them this week.  Cincy 23-Titans 14.

Dallas at St Louis:  The Cowboys are the Cowboys but they just might fool everyone and win one they should, boys 30-17.

Skins at Eagles:  I think the skins will be a better team with their new qb but not this week Eagles 36 Redskins 26.

Texans at the Giants:  Hard to pick Giants until they get a new quarterback. Texans 26 Giants 13.

Vikings at Saints:  No contest Saints in a rout.  38 13

Ravens at Browns:  This is a toughie.  I don't think Ravens are that good but who knows about
Browns.  Ravens 23 Browns 17.

Packers at Lions:  This could be a game who determines the winner in NFC North.  I think the Lions are one of the most talented teams in NFL but the least disciplined so you never know how they will play.  Packers 38 Lions 28.

Colts at Jacksonville:  Colts rebound 31-16.

Oakland at New England: I don 't think the Pats are that great but Oakland is awful.  Brady 31-Oakland 10.

49er's at Cards:  I think we find out Phoenix  May be best team in NFC.  Cards 22- 16.

Denver at Seattle:  The Hawks are best home team in football.  They take care of business Sunday 26-20.  No run-a-way like Super Bowl.

KC at Miami:  Here is a game that both teams need to win this one.  Miami 26-17.

Pittsburgh at Carolina:  Steelers need this one and Carolina is home.  This is a great Sunday night game but I hate picking Steelers 17-14.

Bears at Jets:  Another one of these games where both teams need this one.  I hope the Bears 17-14

The Violent World Of The NFL

Here is a major problem in the world of Twitter,Facebook and even blogs.  Everyone has an opinion on every subject regardless of whether we know anything about the subject or not.

Back in the times of Jesus people were stoned to death when ever a mob got enough strength from the masses  to over power those they thought had committed sins.  During cowboy days mobs would over power the local sheriff and hang those they thought had killed or murdered without ever giving those in jail their chance in court.

Along comes twitter and today without ever giving anyone their day in court the mass of public rules with opinion without knowing the facts.  The NFL has DWI's, wife beating, child abuse cases, drug pocession all pending and their dilemma is what should they do with these players while litigation is pending and in some cases hasn't  even started yet.

Could somebody please tell me why Ray Rice has never been charged with any crimes in the punching out of his soon to be wife and now bride?  The NFL has pretty much thrown him out of the game losing income when he has never been charged.  I don't condone what I saw on the tape but why six months later law enforcement hasn't acted.  If they had then the NFL could suspend him indefinitely unto his case come up.

Just today the Brown's wide receiver pleaded guilty to DWI.  It is now up to the NFL to administer punishment.  I have not seen the film on the Adrian Peterson beating of his four year old.  My first thought is back when I was little I used to have to go get my own switch  and learned very early on that small switches tend to wrap around your leg and hurt a lot more that thicker sticks.  I don't condone brutality when punishing but a good whack never hurt anybody.

We are blaming the NFL for lack of action on their part but I think those in government are to blame as why hasn't any arrest been made in the Ray Rice case.  You know we have all kind of government agencies who control how regulations are administered.  What can the NFL do when Ray Rice nor Adrian Peterson have been arrested for any thing.  Once someone is convicted then let the NFL kick these people out of sports.

Even the Panthers have Greg Hardy who has been ruled guilty by a judge but the NFL has not done nothing.  The world of twitter and 24 hour news has brought our world to the point a decision has to be made immediately based on reports not evidence.  None of us know where the evidence is in every case.  I propose that we let the authorities let due process go forward  before we decide to hang the NFL.

What I Heard And Who I Ran Into

One day last week while listening to the David Glenn Show he interviewed Nascar Driver Brad Keselowski.  During Glenn's questioning he asked who he thought were the best writers who cover Nascar on a Weekly basis.  Keselowski really didn't want to throw names out but from prodding from Glenn one of the names mentioned was Jeff Gluck who is now the Nascar writer for USA Today.

I hope you recognized the Name as Gluck not that long ago was a sports reporter for the Rocky Mount Telegram.  I doesn't matter where it is a local newspaper reporter or a radio disc jockey  all of us at some point in time dreamed of making the big time.

Back in my days of spinning records I had a desire to one day make it to New York and become the new Cousin Brucie.  Those of you too young to know who Cousin Brucie is back in the 60 's in the heyday of AM radio and rock and roll he was the number one disc jockey in America on WABC radio in New York.

WABC use to boom in to my radio in Ahoskie  from New York 7-10 pm every night and I dreamed of being him.  Once I got into radio I use to listen to another 50,000 watt am giant WGAR in Cleveland.  They had this crazy DJ who would call up McDonalds and act like a National Guard General and order 1,200 hamburgers and cheeseburgers for his unit passing through Cleveland.  His name was Don Imus.

Gluck has made it to the big time in his profession and the last time I saw him was at Charles Alston's funeral.  We all regardless of the profession we are brothers doing the thing we love.  I'm glad to see anybody that reaches their dreams and especially someone who I have worked with along the way.

Friday Campbell Volleyball opened their home season with a tournament at home.  Friday night while arriving at our seat Pat says to me isn't that the TV guy from WRAL.  I turned around and about 10 seats away was Jeff Gravley of WRAL.

He was intent watching the games in progress between Elon and North Florida.  Between sets I stepped over and shook hands with him and asked what bought him to Buies Creek.  Gravley's daughter  plays on Elon.

You might know Gravley was born in Rocky Mount even though he graduated from Webb high school in Oxford.  I didn't ask him but you know Gravley is a common name in Rocky Mount.  I bet he has several family members who live here now.

Minor League Impact

The Saturday loss by the Durham Bulls has ended the minor league baseball season for all of us  in this area.  Here is a wrap up of how our locals fared  this season.  Our locals include those who somewhere along the way their family has called this area home.

Brian Goodwin:  shoulder injury ended his season in early July.  Struggled with the strikeout per at bat ratio about once every three bats.  Hit only 219 in AAA Syracuse and his injury plus his batting average will not warrant serious consideration to make Washington Nationals next Spring unless major injuries strike those on big club.

Whit Merrifield:  Father is former Gryphon Bill Merrifield who now lives near Clemmons.  Whit played at South Carolina during their run of College Baseball National Championships.  Promoted by the Kansas City Royals to AAA Omaha in Midseason. Should be given every opportunity to make a Royals  next spring after hitting 340 at Omaha since July.

Hobbs Johnson:  Finished his first full season in the Milwaukee  Brewers organization at Brevard  Florida with a 12-8 record.  Finished season with ERA of 2.93.  Started 24 of 25 pitched games he played in averaging six innings per outing.  Had a three strikeout to walk ratio which any starting pitcher in the majors would take in a heart beat.  Was second on the team in wins, innings pitched, strike outs and ERA.  Expect Hobbs to start out in AA in Spring.

John Wooten:  Dad former Gryphon who now lives near Goldsboro.  John play at Eastern Wayne and ECU.  Got moved to upper A Potomac in the Washington Nationals organization late in season and batted 269 in less than 100 bats.  Was named the MVP of the Carolina League's Mill Cup which is the championship series of the Carolina A league.  Hit 3 homers and drove in 8 RBI in series.  Expect him to start in Potomac in the spring.

Xavier Macklin:  Released  by Gate City in the Frontier a League in early August.  Hopes of continuing in baseball are dimming for the X Man.

Pirates Pluck The Turkeys

After shocking Ohio State last week Virginia Tech was primed  for a major letdown and ECU was prepared to roast the turkey.  The Pirates jump on Tech for three first quarter touchdowns and took rest of the game off until the very end.

The Gobblers scored twice in the fourth quarter  to tie the game at 21 but the Pirates decided that they had one more score to make and the Pirates pull off a dandy beating Virginia Tech in Blacksburg 28-21.

Regardless of how Georgia finishes their season this year Tood Gurley rushes for 131 yards on 20 carries and at times many of those yards came with absolutely no blocking.  He did have a 54yard td run called back but the Bulldogs Lose at South Carolina.  If Gurley stays healthy he will win the Heisman trophy because I can't see any network not wanting Georgia for National TV.  He has become a darling on Sports Center.

Duke jabs Kansas 41-3.  Can you believe  that Duke is now a juggernaut?

NCState wins their first road game in the Dave Doeren era winning at South Florida 49-17

Carolina had the day off and they got an eye full watching the a Pirates.

North  Carolina Wesleyan shuts out Lincoln 27-0.  It is the first Battling a Bishop Shutout in three years.  They open conference play Thursday night at home.  Thursday Night?  No not ESPN but Saturday is the Down East Viking Classic at the Sports Complex.

Finishing up Friday night football RMA remained undefeated as they best StDavids 60-42.

More surprises from Saturday.  Virginia beat Louisville  and Boston College upset Southern Cal in Boston.

Another One Bites The Dust

What may turn out to be their last chance to win a football game this season Nash Central lost to winless Hertford County at Home 20-18. Earlier this week I told you someone would lose this game not win it.  The Bulldogs lead  18-6 near the five minutes to go and fumbled twice to give the game away The winless streak in now in the high teens since Nash Central tasted victory.    The Bulldogs have two more non conference games and neither will be easy.

Northern Nash even their record at 2-2 with an impressive 43-6 victory over Warren County.

The shocker of the night is from Elizabeth City.  I thought this would be a good one but apparently not as  the Eagles throw a shutout on the Hunt Warriors 28-0.  WOW.

Southern Nash took care of business lashing Roanoke Rapids 38-21.

What I would consider a really good win last night North Edgecombe defeated SE HAlifax 24-13.

The ACC football teams were 11-0 last week in the non conference football game.  I went 12-2 on my college picks so after two weeks stand at 21-2.

Here my picks didn't get to due to all the high school games on Thursday.  Arkansas State at Miami.  Just might be another ACC non conference win. Canes 42- 18

Georgia Southern at Georgia Tech.  Those of you that thought  NC State  played badly in the season opener against GS.  Don't be surprised if Tech loses but somehow they pull it out.  31-27

Louisville at Virginia.  Find it very hard to see The Ville lose this one.  35-21

Just last weekend during tour of Los Angeles walked on the campus of Southern Cal and this week they trek to Boston College where I have driven by but never walked. Since I was there  Men of Troy win.  34-21

Syracuse has a non conference game at Central Michigan.  This is kind of game you would expect the Orange to play at home.  Might be close but the Cuse wins 36-28

Pitt heads South to play in Miami against Florida International. Pitt 30 FI 17

Final pick of the week is Todd Gurley at South Carolina.  Gurley will probably look human and only get 100 yards but Georgia wins 33 Gamecocks 24

Best Game Of Week Plays Tonight

Rocky Mount at Rose high lights the high school football season as the Gryphons travel tonight to avoid Friday's rain.  I think this will be a good'en but the Rampants send Gryphons to the losers side of the ledger for the first time.  Rose 35 Rocky Mount 25

The next best game of the weekend just might be the Hertford County at Nash Central.  Neither team has won and the team that loses will do something to lose it.  I said a couple weeks ago I would not pick the Bulldogs until they show improvement.  This is the coin flip game of the week.  Bears have the better quarterback and will at the Bulldogs HC 20 NC 13

The  big County games of the week have two that could tell us plenty about four teams in the area.  First SouthWest Edgecombe at Tarboro .  The Vikings will pull this one out but it's close Tarboro 20 SWE 12.  The other big County game has Beddingfield hosting Fike.  This could be another dandy. Some  how Or other Fike wins 27-20.

Warren County at Northern Nash:  Northern  needs a win and they get one as they handle WC 19-13.

Southeast Halifax at North Edgecombe  SEH will win at The Warriors. 26-16

Roanoke Rapids at Southern Nash:  a This will be a game that the Firebirds can lose three fumbles and sill win Birds 42 Double R 14

Word of a God at RM Prep.  If I am not mistaken Dave Buckey former NC State quarterback from the 70's is coaching WOG. Here's a big chance for Prep to win their second game this season. A win could be second of season and a chance for a third down the road as the Jags continue to build their football program. Rocky Mount Academy plays host to St Davids Friday and should be another yes vote for RMA. The Academy 42 St David 16. This last game this week is the sneaky game of the week.  This could be a doozy of a game  Northeastern at Hunt. Loser might have 40 but Hunts gets revenge from last year.  43-36

Last week went 9-2  which so runs overall record after three weeks to 21-6.

Weather Possible Friday

Today's modern world high school athletic director must worry about ticket sales and with football being and outside sports any possible rain chases AD's to move games.  Saturday is kind of a voo doo day for high school sports since we in North Carolina have so many major college teams killing high school ticket sales for Saturday.  Monday night was a better option but Monday puts next week practice schedule behind before you ever finish your game on Monday.

Recent years teams have slowly move to Thursday football games and several in the area have already made moves since Friday 's weather forecast right now seems to be headed for a washout.  The SouthWest Edgecombe at Tarboro game has been move to 7pm Thursday as well  as Rocky Mount at Rose.  The Rose Rm jv games will be in Rocky Mount Monday night at 6pm.

Regardless of the sport the powerhouse team in the Big East in any sport this years seems to be the Northern Nash Cross Country team.  During last Wednesday 's  Big East conference run The Knights finished in the top six positions and this past weekend won and invitational meet on the coast which had over 600 runners.

The Lady  Gryphons volleyball team won their first conference match in a couple of years when they beat Nash Central in the Conference opener on Tuesday.

Last week in the first week of the NFL football I went 9-7.  It is hard to pick 10 of 16 games each week, I don't know how people bet on games with points spreads when it is hard enough to pick games straight up.  Will try to do better this week.

The Thursday night game sends The Steelers at the Ravens.  Couldn't ask for a worse possible week

for Baltimore.  Short week for the road team and I'm betting the Ravens pull together to win this one. 23-17

Miami at Buffalo.  The winner of this game is the top team in AFC east.  I'll take the Bills at home 19-17

Detroit at Carolina:  Detroit playing on grass at a team with a good defense.  Panthers 26 Lions 23

Atlanta at Cincinnati:   I think Cincy will win AFC North and they will win this one Bengals 27 Atlanta 20

New Orleans at Cleveland:  Saints had better win this one unless they think being behind the Panthers by 2 games is ok.  Saints 31 Cleveland 18

New England At Minnesota:  Talk about a team that needs a win but Pats lose and they will be in last place in AFC  East but Vikes will be no pushover. NE 27 Vikes 25

Arizona at Giants:  after this one the Giants will be looking to replace Eli.  Cards 38 Giants 16

Dallas at Tennessee:  the worse division in football is NFC East and Dallas is heading for 0-2 Titans 26 Boys 13

Jacksonville at Washington:  How bad is Washington, I think this is a toss up game against the Jags for Washington at home against maybe the worse team in the NFL Redskins 16 Jags 13

Seattle at San Diego:  All factors show Seattle in blowout but why am I picking Chargers. 26-23

Stl Louis at Tampa Bay:  Tampa wins 21-6

Kansas City at Denver:  why is this game the National TV game when Seattle and Chargers will be a better game? Denver 36 KC 16

Jets at Green Bay:  Green Bay big. 26-10

Houston at Oakland:  Oakland just might win this one 16-12

Chicago at San Francisco.  If Chicago can't beat Buffalo how can they beat niners  Niners 26 Bears 17

The Monday Night game has Philly at Indy. Light up the scoreboard. Indy 36 Philly 32.

High School Continues To Grow

The 25th year in a row high school sports participation has increased to almost 8 million youngsters.  My own personal opinion is every student should be required to do some sort of extra curricular activity.  Students who are active take more interest in school.

If the early returns hold during the upcoming NC State North Carolina football game the loser will probably score 60 points.  Neither team has shown any interest in defense but both can put points on the board.

During my trip last week to Long Beach the day after we were on the Price Is Right we took an all day tour of LA/ Beverly Hills etc and one of our stops on the tour was the LA Coliseum.
Having only watch football games from the coliseum on TV our tour guide pointed out that the stadium was built for the 1932  Olympics and the field was built for track and field not football.  Even though it will hold more than 100,000 the end zone  seats are more than 50 yards from the field at both ends.

I knew one reason the NFL if it ever returns to LA will wants a stadium that can be at full capacity and all the seat can view all the field.  After seeing it in person for the first time it is not a very good place to watch football.

Thursday night when the NFL season started we had dinner and we arrived in our room just after 8pm and I said to myself  "oh good the NFL game is just starting".  Turn on the TV only to find out the game had five minutes left to go.  I forgot the game started at 5 in California.

Gryphon Season Starts Friday

The Rocky Mount Gryphons off to their best start in half a lustrum scoring 139 points while giving up a measly 7 points.  Are the Gryphons that good or are they benefactors  on their competition having down years all at once?

There is no fault of the Gryphons that those on the schedule are not very good at the same time but to say the least Friday night we will get a real look into how good this team really is.  One clue that the Gryphons are better than the recent past is their ability to strike quickly.  If the Gryphons were winning 28-21 in all their games would we even be asking the question are they that good?

Rose has scored 138 points in three games having faced Athens Drive, Laney and Nash Central.  With the exception of Nash Central they have had quality competition and against the two 4-A teams are averaging 42 points per game.

In order for the Gryphons to win this game they will need to score at the rate they have the first three.  The defense will need to hold the Rampants to 25 or so, so that puts the offense in need of scoring a bunch of points.

Historically the Gryphons only beat Rose when Rose is down or the Gryphons  are great.  Most of the time just being a good team is not enough for Rocky Mount against Rose.  Let's look at the number that might show that history is not like the past.  Within the last 10 years Rose has dropped from 1900 students to right at 1400.  This can be attributed to South Central pulling students  as well as the other Pitt County schools getting some fringe area students that normally went to Rose.

This will be the game of the week in high school football for all schools east of Raleigh.  What do we need to look for?  If the Gryphons win look out they are loaded.  If they lose say 42-28 that would tell me as long as the Gryphons stay healthy they will be in the running for the Big East crown.  If they were to lose say 42-0 then just maybe these three wins are inflated by poor competition.

The only way to judge is play the game and to this point in the Jason Battle era at Rocky Mount this is the biggest game of his coaching career short of the two 1st round playoff games his first two years.  Regardless of the outcome Battle has the Gryphons heading in the right directions and there is still a whole season to play.

Followed Volleyball To Long Beach

The Campbell volleyball took on Duke Tuesday at Cameron Indoor Stadium an the Doughtie's were not there because we left Tuesday a day before  the team in order to take a vacation in a Tinsel Town.
The Lady Camels played in a tournament this weekend in Long Beach California.  By  the way the Lady Camels gave Duke all they wanted losing in four sets but the fourth set was 25-23 which was winnable for the Camels.

Wednesday our first full day we attended a taping of Price Is Right where we spent four hours hoping to get on stage.  Not knowing how heavy the traffic could be and it was heavy we arrived at the CBS studio and hour and fifteen minutes before needed but oh well, where else are we going to go in an hour.  We were given numbers and Pat an I had five and six so of the 300 people in the audience we are near the front of the line.

Spending nearly four hours in line either sitting or standing you get to know those within talking distance of you and the fourth guy in line is Matthews from Baltimore.  Person number seven Charlene is  from Louisville.  Part of the process is bring interviewed by one of the producers and that interview goes a long way in whether you get on stage or not.  We didn't make it but both Mathews and  Charlene did in the first four and both won their bid and got on stage but neither got past the wheel.

Once inside being a veteran of many local shows on WHIG I was not surprised by all the lights on stage maybe 75 more than WIG.  We were seated by how many are in your party so every seat was filled.  We got on the second Row and I sat on the isle seat so everyone heading on stage from the left side got a high five from me except one who was so excited she forgot to high five anybody.

George Gray  the announcer gave everyone their instruction about cheering when people were bidding and at 3:50 pm that Price Is Right Jingle started and mayhem persued.  The crowd noise is so loud that hearing Drew Carey is impossible so it is a good thing he holds a mic so people on  TV have no problem hearing him.  In case George mispronounced your name a producer held up each contestants name in case they didn't recognize it or hear it when he called out names.

It takes a while during commercial breaks to change the sets for the next segment so Drew Carey talks with the audience and basically does standup comedy routine based on  the answers you give him about where you are from and what you do. He was really great at that and that was as good as they show.   The highlite for me since we didn't make it on stage was giving Drew a high five as my seat was ten feet from George the announcer and when Drew came out the first time to talk to the audience he stood on the edge of the stage right in front of me.

My goal was I wanted to pull the wheel so that meant I had to win one bid and since we never got to contestants row didn't 't get to pull the wheel.  We did get the next best thing.  They took everyone's
Picture while standing in line in front of a blue sheet and when we bought our copy after the show the back ground we were standing at the wheel.  So when I get back home all You will hear from me was I got to pull the wheel.  The show airs November 24th so I think I  will take that day off to see how much of my 15 minutes of fame I still  have left.

The Old Dog Can Still Bite

Tarboro fresh off one of their worse losses in a decade bounced back Friday night with  a 20-7 over Northern Nash.  Tarboro goes to 2-1 while the Knights lose their second in a row and fall to 1-2.  Tarboro's defense shutout the Knights in the second after a 7-7 tie in the first half.

Rocky Mount had 20 points on the board before half the crowd there had a chance to sit down and from there coasted to a 55-0 win over Hertford County.   Another night of big play football for the Gryphons and the defense pitches another shutout.  Rocky Mount improves to 3-0 while HC falls to 0-3.

When you have struggled to score the way Nash  Central has all year it is hard to come from behind when Rose high runs back the opening kickoff.  That six points was all the Rampants needed but they got plenty more in dumping The Bulldogs 51-0.

I thought this was going to be a close game and it turned out to be as Bunn out scores Southern Nash 31-27.  It is Bunn's second straight win while the Firebirds lose for the second straight game.

Hunt made the trip to Wilmington and almost pulled off a big one but came up short as the Warriors lose to New Hanover 36-32.

North Edgecombe tough last week with cross county rival SWE but  down south in Princton  they are no match for Princton as the Warriors lose 43-13

RMA got Hobgood again after scoring 72 on on the Eagles during last season regular season game.  Revenge came during last year's playoff win and on Friday more Eagles.  52-20 over Hobgood.

SouthWest Edgecombe out scores Greene Central 38-28.

Fike gets a test from Kinston but they remain unbeaten 21-12 over Kinston.

Beddingfield put 20 on the board against Pinecrest but they had a hard time holding down Pinecrest as they score 45.

Things to ponder:  Northern having a hard time moving the ball.  The Bulldogs move it even less.  Rocky Mount is 3-0 but there opponents so far are 3-6.  Next week we will know about Rocky Mount.  They are 1-2 but don 't sleep on Hunt.  Southern needs some defense.  SWE is not blowing away people they probably should.  Tarboro will be ok come November.

Week Two College Football

Off to a decent start in college football picks as I started out getting all nine correct.  Week two has a couple of really good  matchups.

ECU travels to Columbia to take on Carolina the southern branch.  Hard to tell whether the Cocks are good or not after the licking they got last week.  Same for the a Pirates are they as good as last weeks winning score. SC 35 Pirates 27

Stevenson at NC W.  Fighting Bishops fought hard last season at Stevenson and I think being home just might do the trick.  NCW 23 Stevenson 17

ODU is fairly new to D1 football but they are fully loaded with scholarship players.  Pack will win second game of the season in another high scoring game N C ST 41 ODU 27

The ACC game of the week has Pitt traveling to BC.  Pitt should handle the Eagles.  Pitt 35 BC 21

Georgia Tech who didn't impress last week travels to New Orleans to take on Tulane a double overtime loser to Tulsa last week.  Georgia Tech will sneak this one out 27-24.

South Carolina State at Clemson. Bad week to visit Clemson the week after Todd Gurley  destroyed the Tigers.  Clemson 45 SCST 16

Richmond at Virginia.  I don't think UVA did that bad against UCLA considering they were down 21-0 and  the UCLA defense had done all the scoring. UVA 31 Richmond 17

Wake Forest had no offense against Louisiana Monroe.  Can they score on Gardner Webb.  The answer is enough 24-17.

Murray State at Louisville.  Louisville is in a short week and that may make this a closer game.  Louisville 45 Murray St 31

Duke heads to Troy where this could be interesting game. The interesting part will be if Duke puts 50 on the board again. Troy was blitzed by Alabama last week.  That's Birmingham not the real Alabama. Duke 44 Troy 17.

Florida A and M at Miami. The only question in this game is whether the A and M band Performs at the half.  Hurricanes 56 A and M 24.

The Citadel at Florida St.  I wonder whether Vegas put a spread on this game.  FSU 56  Cit 7.

UNC host San Diego St and the Aztecs can score.  This will be a high scoring affair.  Heels 42 SDST 31.

Virginia Tech at Ohio  St.  Here is another chance for the ACC to beat a profile school to help the image of the ACC.  This could be a close game since the Buckeyes lost their starting QB.  It will not help enough. Ohio St 27 VAT 22.

Week Three Predictions

I thought last week's eight games were tough as I went 5-3 which gives me a 12-4 start to the season. After some of the game results last week many questions exist as we pick the games of week three.

Tarboro at Northern Nash:  Missed both of the picks involving these two last week.  Between them they gave up 90 points. And scored between them only 27.  Sure seems both defenses need to stop somebody this week.  I have no idea how to gauge both of these teams right now so here is a coin flip. Heads Northern 20 Tarboro 14.

SouthWest Edgecombe at Greene Central. Cougars should handle this one, 26-12.

Hertford County at Rocky Mount.  Rocky Mount has shown to be a big play team so far and big plays  relate to speed.  By the way so far the defense has allowed just seven points.  Gryphons 36 Hertford County 14.

Rose at Nash Central :  Said last week wouldn't  pick the Bulldogs until they showed some form of improvement.  Even if they were playing well wouldn't pick them this week.  Rose 49 Nash Central 7.

Beddingfield at Pinecrest: Here is another game that' a pickem game.  I bet this one is close but I'll go with the home team Pinecrest 21-16.

Hunt Visits New Hanover:  This  will probably be another good game but Hunt makes long ride home on the short end of the score.  New Hanover 26 Hunt 20.

Fike at Kinston:  Fike will get a test but they will prevail 35-20.

Southern Nash at Bunn:  Here we go with another game  that is hard to gauge where these teams are right now.  Another close one but the Firebirds will sneak out with this one.  26-20.

North Edgecombe who gave SWE all they wanted last week will travel to Princton to take on one of the best backs in the country.  Here we go again.  Can't quite pull the trigger for the Warriors.   Princton 26-14.

Louisburg at Rocky Mount Prep:  The next step in the progression of football at Rocky Mount Prep is they now need to beat someone that is a better team than them.  Won 't be this week Louisburg 26 Prep 18.

Rocky Mount Academy host Hobgood :  One bad thing about playing on Thursday night is every coach that you play will scout you if they still play on Friday.  I would suspect 29-0 was a vanilla  score after getting early lead RMA had no reason to show everyone their arsenal. RMA  44 Hobgood 28.

NFL Season Opens Thursday

High school football is heading toward week three, college week two and starting Thursday the  NFL begins another season.  Each Wednesday this year I will make picks from the NFL wek's games.

The first game of the season sends Green Bay to the Super Bowl Champs  Seahawks.  I think the Seahawks will have a Super Bowl hangover during the season but not in the opener. Hawks squeeze the Packer 26-24

New Orleans will open in Atlanta.  I suspect New Orleans will return to the top spot in the NFC South and in order to win your  division you need to win division games.  Saints 31 Atlanta 20

This might be the two fighting for the AFC North.  This will be close but Ravens roost in victory.  Baltimore 23 Cincinnati 17.

Buffalo at Chicago.  Bears will contend in NFC Central.  Bears 26 Buffalo 17

Washington at Houston.  This one could go either way.  I have a feeling before long Skins will change quarterbacks.  Houston 26 Washington 20

Tennessee will open at Kansas City.  KC after winning nine in a row to start last year have faltered.  Titans win 20-17.

AFC East game sends New England to Miami and I can't see the Dolphins winning this one. Pats 31 Fish 23.

Oakland at the Jets will be and almost must game for the Jets. Can 't to afford to lose to Raider Nation.  Jets 17 Oakland 6.

Jacksonville will travel to Philadelphia and I suspect a mismatch.  Eagle 35  Jax16

Cleveland travels to Pittsburgh in a black and blue game.  Steelers need a good start and doubt whether The  Browns are that good.  Pitt 24 Cleveland 16

Minnesota at Saint Louis.  New quarterback for the Rams due to injuries.  Vikes win the the Dome.  23-21.

San Francisco  is at Dallas.  Seems at this point 49's are struggling.  Dallas needs to beat somebody good.  I don't think Dallas is that good but the 49's are lost at the moment.  Dallas 26 San Fran 17

Carolina at Tampa Bay.  Cam is not right, I hope this doesn't turn out like Washington last year when Cam never is healthy.  Tampa 23 Carolina 20

Oh boy, one of the games of the day will be Indy at Denver.  I see high scoring win for Denver 31-27.

New York Giants at Detroit.  Both these teams need this one but the Giants have Eli.  Lions 27 GMen 20.

San Diego at Arizona.  This might really be a great game but it doesn't start until 10:30 Monday.  Rivers and company will out score the Cards.  Chargers 34 Zona 28.

First Two Week Trends

The Rocky Mount  Gryphons have been impressive the first two weeks of the high school football season scoring  85 points.  They have scored on defense, special teams and even  a touchdown or two from their offense.  The closer we get to conference play the less teams will kick the ball to Rashawn Harris on punts.  If the late Charles Alston was still around Harris has to be close to the all time record on punt return touchdowns from last year and the early season this year.

The defense has allowed just seven points and the defense seems to be quick and to this point quicker than the first two games.  One more week until a trip to Rose an a meeting with SouthWest Edgecombe who will run right straight at them possibly taking away the quickness factor.

Northern Nash's defense had a hard time with the Northeastern speed.   The best way to off set quickness is occupy the ball on offense and score early and hope to wear out  the opposing defense in the fourth  quarter.  Up next for the Knights will be another fast team where to this point has had trouble holding onto the ball.  Northern has played Tarboro as well as any other non conference foe in recent years.  They will need to keep the Vikings out of the end zone.

Southern Nash so far has shown to be average on offense and average on defense.  That is not a good combination if this trend holds for the whole season.  I think if you ask any coach regardless of wins and losses is seeing players improve as the season progresses.  There is still four more non conference games to go before the playoff push begins.

The streak stands at 15 at Nash Central.  Their defense has been half way decent but the offense has had halves so far this season that they were non existent and it puts way too much pressure for the defense. The Hertford County non conference game may be their chance to break the streak in a couple of weeks.

North Edgecombe was very competitive against SWE  and that might lead them to be in that final game against Tarboro at seasons end with a chance for a conference crown or a high seed in the state playoffs.

We have gotten so use to expecting Tarboro to run all over everyone that it seems unnatural for them to act as mere mortals.  If they don 't do anything else this week is they need to be able to make the exchange between the center and quarterback.  Once they can do that then they can  focus on others parts of their game.

Rocky Mount Academy in two short years under BW  Holt has risen from the patsy to the hunted.  They have risen to the Level where Tarboro has been where they will be expected to win every game.   That is a new problem for the Eagles as they now have to learn to be ready to play regardless of the quality of the foe.

NC Wesleyan Opens Saturday Night

NC Wesleyan College will open their 2014 football season Saturday night when they play the first night game ever as they host Stevenson University.  Coach Jeff Filkovski hopes to improve on last years 2-8 record  and hopes to have better results than last years 19-9 lost at Stevenson in Baltimore County Maryland.  The 7pm kickoff will be at Rocky Mount Sports Complex.

While we are speaking of Wesleyan this falls under the category of it is never too late.  John Bracket who has been at points in his life at Wesleyan has been the women's basketball and softball coach at the same time.  Bracket will be part of the 2014 NC Wesleyan Hall Of a Fame. Bracket is in the top forty of all time softball wins in D3 history. He also served for 20 years as the women's basketball coach.

Just last night I got to watch the replay of the Georgia-Clemson football game in which Tarboro 's Todd Gurley scored four touchdowns and rushed for 198 yards.  Didn't 't realize that Gurley 's kickoff return was 105 yards but the NCAA doesn't 't recognize anything beyond 100 yards.  Now as a junior Gurley will more than likely turn pro next season if Todd can stay healthy something  he could not do last year he has gotten off to the type of start that every Heisman voters will be watching every game he plays.  It would not hurt if Georgia could win enough games to make the football playoffs.

One good thing about the Labor Day holiday is the PGA tour finishes on Monday.

Tony Stewart returned to Nascar racing this weekend after sitting out three weeks since he was involved in an accident which resulted in the on track death of a local New York State  driver.  Didn't last long as Stewart crashed after a flat tire.  Sure do miss Nascar not running at Darlington on Labor day.
