Big East Basketball Scramble

Last night I was at Northern Nash as part of our taping the basketball games as Tarboro visited Northern Nash.  The Northern Girls had little trouble in downing the Lady Vikings 72-27.  So far this season I have seen all of the Rocky Mount schools in the Big East and there is no reason at this point to think Northern Nash cannot make it back to the Regional as they did last year.  They have practically the entire team back from last years team that lost only three times.  Just looking at them  you would say that they are not quick but they are bangers.  When they go to the boards or when you try to drive the lane they don't mine contact. Physical play  helps off set their  lack of speed.

Rocky Mount like Northern will be right there when it counts  as they have the best player in the league and they have like Northern a smothering full court defense.  What Rocky Mount doesn't have is depth.  That will be a strong suit for Northern.  Rocky Mount could really use an outside bomber besides J'Kyra Brown  who can keep the defense from sagging in and forcing Rocky Mount to shoot outside.  We will get an early look at who is the best between those two Monday night as they collide in the opening round of the Nash County Christmas Tournament.  I could be the first and if they both survived to get to the Regional of five games against each other.

Sitting back and taking it easy is Nash Central as they are letting everyone think totally about Northern and Rocky Mount.  I can tell you right now that Nash Central will not be easy regardless of where the game is played at this year.  The past two or three years Nash Central  has not had very good teams but that is not the case this year.   If either RM or NN have injuries Nash Central could easily push past one of the big guns.  Rocky Mount is the one team that can not stand it to have one of their main players go down for any time with an injury.  Northern is ten players deep and could survive a main gog getting hurt.

If everyone stays healthy  the Big East girls could wind up sending two teams to the Regional.  It almost happened last year and everyone in the top tier is better than they were last year.
