VolleyBall Wins

It was senior day at Rocky Mount High School and three varsity players played their last regular season game in the gym today. It is always hard to say good bye to seniors as Lauren Campbell, Tamisha Walker and Kushunn Seabreeze walked with their families to the net. Today was especially difficult for Kushunn Seabreeze when it was announce that her father who died about a month ago was not there to walk with her. Tears flowed on the Gryphon side of the net.

Today Northern Nash and Rocky Mount came together for the Susan G Koman Breast Cancer Foundation. The two team raised around $1,730.00 during the day but they were there to play volleyball. Maybe it was the emotions but Northern Jumped to and early lead and stay ahead the entire first game to beat Rocky Mount 25-23. The Gryphons put their emotions aside and won the next three games to finish the regular season 10-0 in the Big East for the second year in a row. No Rocky Mount senior has ever tasted defeat in a conference regular season match.

The season is not over for volleyball as they will make a trip Saturday to Winterville and play in the South Central Susan G Koman cancer event. They will be short handed as only nine players will make the trip as most of the juniors will be taking SAT's on Saturday.

Soccer having to make up a game missed from last week because of the rain won three times this week in conference play beating Northern, Southern and Nash Central to up their record to 13-2 and 4-1 in conference play. There is two weeks to go in Conference play and Monday is the showdown with Hunt who beat the Gryphons 2-1 in Rocky Mount the first time so the Gryphons are playing for a chance to tie for first.

Cross County running in Wilson on Wednesday ran second in both the boys and girls races. Will Bass of Nash Central who is head and shoulders the best runner in the conference was the boys winner.

Nash Central jv's beat Rocky Mount 18-14 which sets up the varsity game for Friday night.

Rocky Mount @Nash Central. Both teams need wins to qualify for the playoffs. Each at 2-4 start conference play at Nash Central. Rocky Mount's small size has help with quickness in the first half of every game only to get beaten down by the end of the game. I suspect this game will follow that trend. RM will hold on to pull out a victory Rocky Mount 21 Nash Central 19.

The much improved Knights of Northern Nash travel to Hunt to open conference play. Hunt expected to be a contender but I am not sure they thought Northern would be. Northern will let everyone know that the Knights are back. Northern 26 Hunt 14

Preseason favorite Southern Nash is a home to Fike in their conference opener. Southern wins 36 -14 over Fike.

Conference play starts and in the six weeks of non conference play I was 20-6 on my picks.

Paint It Pink Game Is Today

Today is Senior day in Tennis and Volleyball as they play their last home games during the regular season. Tennis meets rival Northern Nash at Sunset Park while back at the gym Volley ball collides with Northern.

Today the gym will decorated PINK as much as possible as Northern and Rocky Mount collide in the last regular season game of the year. Rocky Mount is already secure in the #1 spot in the playoffs and in next weeks tournament but Northern is still trying to make it to the playoffs.

It was less than a month ago when the idea started circulating to do this game for the Susan G Komen Breast Cancer Foundation and it has ready taken off with both Tabitha Wilcox and Northern Coach Patricia Haggerty leading the charge for their team.

Sponsors were gathered and 150 tee shirts were printed and both sides sold out of their allotments. The Dental Care Center, Old Dominion Freight Lines, Jamie Mitchell Auto Sales, Griffin Food Stores and RTS Screen Printing help pay for the tee shirts.

Parent have bought bake good and drinks and Chick-Fil-A sandwiches will be sold during the event with all proceed going to the Susan G Komen breast cancer Foundation. Rocky Mount High School is donating one dollar from every ticket sold to give to the foundation.

The JV's start playing at 4.30 and the varsity start 30 minutes after they finish. If you have never been to a volleyball game today is the day that you need to make it your first game. Rocky Mount's 19 game regular season conference win streak is on the line. Northern is still trying to qualify for the playoffs and if for no other reason both sides are supporting the Susan G Komen Breast Cancer Foundation today. Oh Yeah Northern and Rocky Mount are playing each other in volleyball.

Come out and help support a great cause.
