The Tale Of Two Halfs

Once again Rocky Mount played inspired football against a superior team for one half leading 14-12. Last week they held on for victory, Today they succumb to the Cougars of SouthWest Edgecombe. 38-20.

The major stats in this game is this, SouthWest had nine possessions of the football. They lost three fumbles and score on every drive that they didn't fumble. Six drives, six touchdowns. Rocky Mount fumble the opening kickoff and later fumbled another kickoff and only had seven drives in the game. They scored three times.

The most critical stat of all was in the second half with three minutes to play in the game Rocky Mount ran five plays in the second half. One was intercepted, one tackled in the end zone for a safety and another a dive on the goal line trying to move the ball away from the goal line. The other two plays they gained eight yards.

Southwest just pounded on the Gryphons four yards a play and win. The Gryphons took their last drive down the field to score to get to twenty points. Their last drive was more plays than they had had the entire second half before that.

A healthy Northern Nash Knights play with their entire squad for the first time this season and pull out a major victory for the Knights clipping South Johnston 33-25. This makes Northern 3-2 on the season and they are looking like they want to be a player when it comes time to win the Big East.

The game of the night was in Roanoke Rapids and Tarboro made mence meat out the Yellow Jackets for a while leading 42-7. The Vikings had to hold on to win 42-35. Boy I can't wait to hear the details of that one.

Nash Central picks up their second win knocking off Bertie 21-6 during homecoming.

Hunt whips Beddingfield in a cross County showdown 27-20.

Southern Nash pours it on South Granville 44-7.

Thoughts and Comments:

Rocky Mount had a nice drive just before the half that they ended on the one as time expired. Wonder how that game would have unfolded if they lead 21-12 at the half. This is two weeks in a row that Rocky Mount has played two teams better than they are. They held their own for a while in both. You can see they are getting better.

If the Northern offense will continue to help the defense with some points like they did tonight Northern is going to be a tough team in conference play. The defense gave up twenty five against a pass happy offense.

In contrast Southern Nash has played a very easy schedule except for one game and they lost that. I just don't know whether we know how good the Firebirds are. I just have a feeling that Northern and Rocky Mount will be battle tested by conference time, I don't know whether Southern will.
