A weekend To Ponder

Unless there is a upset a long the way Southwest Edgecombe and Tarboro should be headed back toward another showdown in the Eastern Plains 2-A and both should be high seeds in the 2-A playoffs again.

Northern Nash looks as if they are ready to return to the playoffs a place they have not been since 2002?

Regardless of who you pull for State, Carolina, Wake, ECU and I will throw Duke into this lump statement but you cannot call Duke your average college football program over the past thirty years.

When you are average that pretty much means against any other average team you have a chance to win. In most cases you lose to the teams favored to beat you and you beat teams that you are favored over, in most cases.

Whenever a team is better than expected and say wins seven games in a row, it is hard for an average program to live with it's success. It is kind of like winning the lottery. There are not many people who in ten years after winning the lottery aren't broke even more than before they got rich.

The facts are this that the Big five football schools in North Carolina are average. 7-4 is a great year. N C State is off to a 3-0 start and for the Big five the only one to this point that has a possibility of having a great year. Each of them at some point have had great starts but they fall a lot of times to teams they shouldn't lose to. Then that great season is back to average.

N C State is at that level where the next three weeks may shoot them up in the polls. they have Georgia Tech. Then Virginia Tech in Raleigh before a bus ride to Greenville. They could lose all three or win all three.

If there is one thing I like about Tom O'Brien is being a Naval Academy graduate he is willing to stick to the plan. Last year when the secondary looked like JV's players he kept his freshmen red shirted instead of losing a half year of eligibility. This year he is reaping his patience.

Since State is considered an average program they will probably lose at lease one of those next three if not more. If they could win all three the Pack for the first time since the conference went ot the division play actually just might play in Charlotte the first weekend in December.

But, because they are average there is six more games after these next three to keep them at average. I am sure ECU right now at 2-1 thinks they can win their conference and they can. If State goes to Greenville 5-0 Terry Holland had better get those bleachers fixed because the crowd will be un real for that one.
