Gryphons get The Job Done

It has become abundantly clear that Rocky Mount plans to pitch Benton Moss the first game of each week and the second will be in the hands of Sophomore Jeremy Johnson  Thus far in conference play Moss has been untouchable striking out 37 batters of the 42 outs recorded. Johnson pitched ok last Saturday but was the losing pitcher in the 14-7 loss to Hunt.

Tonight getting the second game start of the week Johnson allowed four hits and only allowed two runners on with walks or hit batters to reach base as he pitches four of the five innings played as Rocky Mount cruises to a 12-0 victory over Southern Nash.  Andy Morris pitched the fifth.

Rocky Mount scored four in the first on an rbi single by Matthew  Berry,  a ground out rbi for Thomas Berry and a two run homer by Taylor Clontz.  That point on it was a matter getting the game over without any injuries. The Gryphons only collected six hits in producing 12 runs.  Thomas Berry  and Benton Moss had back to back rbi singles in the second which ran the score to 7-0.

Rocky Mount score three times in the third without a hit  and added two in the last bat in the fourth also with out a hit.. Jeremy Johnson,Matt Berry,Thomas Berry, Benton Moss,Taylor Clontz and Sam Lilley collect the Gryphon six hits.

The Gryphons are 3-1 in conference play as they have two road games next week at Northern Tuesday and at Nash Central Thursday.  They play Saturday April 16th in the South Johnston Easter Tournament and will not have another home game until Tuesday April 26th against Fike.

Girls softball scared Southern Nash to death tonight for a while.  The Lady Firebirds led 11-9 going into the seventh but scored 13 runs to beat the Lady Gryphons 24-10.

The Carolina Hurricanes got some help tonight as the Atlanta Thrashers beat  the New York Rangers 3-0.  If Carolina wins both games that they have left on Saturday and Sunday the Hurricanes make the playoffs as the #8 seed regardless of what the Rangers do in their final game Saturday. Should the Rangers lose Saturday the Hurricanes can get in with either one out right win or two games going to overtime.  They hold the tie breaker with the Rangers.

Pro basketball the Bobcats lost last night and that eliminated them from the playoffs.
