NFL Cranks Up This Week

It has been a long time since the "boys of the frozen Tundra" won the Super Bowl. back in early February.  A lock out dominated the off season.  All of that said the NFL is back and Green Bay host New Orleans Thursday night to start the season on time.  Last year I only (guessed) predicted six of the twelve teams to make the playoffs.Neither of my guesses made the Super Bowl.  Well it is time to try again.

NFC West: Seattle made it to the playoffs last year but I doubt they can even win seven games this year.  St Louis is getting better.  San Fran I don't know where to put them.  The team that will represent the west in the playoffs will be the Arizona Cardinals.  They will win at least nine if not more.

NFC North: Green Bay made it to the playoffs last year with a little help the last game of the season. The NFL have turned into a league of opportunity  You don't have to be the best just in the playoffs and then be the best. Detroit is the most improved team in football and will make a run at 8-8.  Where does that leave the Bears?  Probably third in the division and Minnesota will bring up the rear.

NFL South:  I just don't give Matt Ryan as much credit as most experts do in football.  Because I don't think he is as good as they experts are giving him I think Atlanta is heading for third in the South.  Tampa will probably finish second.  That leaves two teams in that division and you know just like I know the Panthers will celebrate this season if they win five games.  That leaves New Orleans in the playoffs as the division winner.

NFL East:  The Washington Redskins have improved enough this season that they will not finish last in the division.  We will leave that for Eli Manning and the New York Giants.  I don't see where Dallas has improved any at all and I wouldn't be surprised if the Redskins beat them out for second.  Despite all the changes made in Philly they will take the division but only with a record like 10-6.  There are folks already giving Philly the Super Bowl but I don't see it.

I really like the way Detroit played in the preseason but there is no Super Bowl ring given in August. I think by late January both New Orleans and Green Bay will fight it out for the NFC and who ever gets the home game will have the big edge.  I suspect it will be in Green Bay.

Tomorrow we will look at the AFC.

Bits And Pieces Of A Football Saturday

It is very hard to tell how good any high school team in this area is this week having been  in school  for  only two days  and a few teams played with only one practice while others had two days worth.

Saturday night Nash Central hosted Roanoke Rapids and for the first half played like they had never missed a practice leading 24-6.  The second half was more will this game ever end but in the end Nash Central takes out the Yellow Jackets 24-14.

Rocky Mount hits the road for the third time this year as they traveled to Hertford County and when the clock struck zero Rocky Mount had beaten HC 28-22.  Last visit to Ahoskie the Bears put 50 on the Gryphons but Saturday the Gryphons head home undefeated and looking forward to their first home game next Friday pending Hurricane Katia.

Carolina gets a nice win as they start a new quarterback and coach and a new play by play announcer.  Even though Angel did a good job for the Heels on the radio broadcast,  it just didn't sound like Carolina was playing today without Woody behind the mic.

There could not have been another player in the country that played Saturday under more pressure than Mike Glennon did at State.  He got better as the game went on as the Wolfpack joins the Heels in the win column.  I was cheering hard for Russell Wilson the other night but you know  Wisconsin out weighed UNLV by 50 pounds per man.  Wilson had to have a good game.  It was like Wisconsin was playing the high school all star team from North Dakota.

Wake  played great Thursday night until their quarterback got hurt.  They tangle with NC State next weekend.

Duke thinks they can get to a bowl game this year.  They just might if they play somebody besides Richmond.  The Spiders bite the Blue Devils for the third straight  time 23-21,

There is good news for East Carolina.  ECU shut out the South Carolina Gamecocks in the first quarter.  The bad news is Steve Spurrier then put in his first team quarterback in the second quarter and the Pirates give up 42 points in the second half 56 for the game.  Next week they host Virginia Tech a team that put 66 on App State Saturday.

I guess everyone has heard about the twin brothers who were at a hockey benefit with their father and part of the fund raiser was the  winning ticket would get a chance to shoot a puck from center ice into a six inch hole at the end of the rink.  When the tickets were drawn the brother that had won for the shot  was not inside the arena so his twin bother took his ticket and took the shot and made it and won $50,000.  The scheme work fine until the next day when the father realized that in order to teach his boys integrity he had to tell the authorities the truth.  No money but something to tell the grand children.
