Monday is always media day for the regional basketball in Greenville and Wes Bradshaw is going to represent us and get us our press passes for the week long regional to be held in Greenville. You will see interviews on the locals TV stations like 7 and 9 during the week which they will actually get on Monday.
Rocky Mount after the reseeding plays 25-2 North Guilford. I doesn’t really matter to me who they play because in order to advance any further the Gryphons will have to play better than they did Friday and I thought they played great. There is an old farmers saying that from here on out who ever they play they are in the tall cotton.
Tip time is 7.00pm Thursday
Heart break for the fighting Bishops of NC Wesleyan who had won the regular season championship and as the #1 seed played Christopher Newport today in the conference finals at Newport’s home court and lost. 67-63. The loss knocks the Fighting Bishops out of the NCAA Div III basketball tournament.
Nash County sent 11 wrestlers to the state championship in Greensboro on Friday. Southern Nash sent Buddy Jones who wrestled at 125 pounds, Steven Morgan at 135. Nash Central two wrestlers and they were Josh Taylor at 105 and Jacob Robinson at 135. Rocky Mount was represented by Chandler Phillips in the 135 pound class and Janicento Williamsonat 171. Big East conference champion Northern Nash had the most wrestlers with five. Tavis Richardson 145 pounds, Kris Horton 160, Bryant Sweet 171, Danzel Perry at 189 and Joe Young wrestled at 215.
I have had a hard time getting on the NCHSAA website to the wrestling brackets but the only locaL wrestler to make it to the quarter finals was Northern’s Joe Young. I am sure it is all over by now but it has be very frustrating when you click on the brackets and nothing appears for five minutes. I am sure with all the people trying to get on the site plus thee NCHSAA updating it ever so often it has been for every one.
Brian Goodwin hit his first college home run Saturday in Carolina’s first loss of the season. N C State beat Cal(Irvine )Yesterday the #3 team in the country and beat James Madison today. ECU got ninth inning heroics to beat South Carolina Saturday 4-3 after losing the opener yesterday. While I was at the playoff basketball game Friday night wife Pat went out with a friend Debbie to Mario’s and Billy Godwin was there e having dinner.
Finally , I have never been a Danica Patrick fan. She has never shown me to be much of a driver when she was in Indy Car racing. Saturday during the race at Las Vegas in the Saturday division of NASCAR Patrick crashed and promptly got out of the car and blamed the other guy. It is clear to me that Patrick is a pretty face that can sell spark plugs but she needs to go to Kenly on a Saturday night and learn to drive in the push and shove division before she gets killed or kill someone else.

Gryphons Sprint To Regionals
THE NCHSAA HAS RESEEDED THE EAST REGIONAL AND THE GRYPHONS PLAY NORTH GUILFORD AT 7.00PM THURSDAY NIGHT AT MINGES AT WILLIAMS ARENA AT ECU
I mentioned when talking about Wednesday's victory over West Craven that one of the Assistant coaches had said walking off the court the the Gryphons were too quick and long. Well, Friday night that was apparent again as the Gryphons were able to come up with rebounds on the third attempt while C B Aycock would still be finishing their second jump at the rebound.
A major improvement in this years team is their ball handling and again tonight the play of Darius McKnight,Kenyatta Bullock and William Young lead the Gryphons. The turnover match up wound up 15 a piece in the game but with two minutes to go in the third quarter the Gryphons had committed only five. By that point in the game the Gryphons had control.
Darius McKnight lead the way for the Gryphons being one of five double digit scorers with 15 points and also showed that rebounding quickness with eleven rebounds. Detrail Jenkins was also a double double man with eleven points and twelve rebounds. The Gryphons win going away despite Tashawn Mabry sitting more than he wanted to with foul trouble but in limited play Tashawn gets seventeen points points and nine rebounds. William Young and Terrell Hilliard were double digit scorers from off the bench with eleven and ten points.
Mike Gainey earns his third trip to Greenville and the regional for the third time in nine years. The Gryphons will be matched up against South Central who beat Fike 77-57 and are sporting a 27-1 record. The other regional semi final will send two Mid Piedmont conference teams against each other as NE Guilford beat Southern Lee 60-50 and Northern Guilford edged Westover 59-58.
The 3-A regional is Thursday night and who plays in the early game or late game is not yet announced but with two teams from the same conference matched up in one game I can't see that game being the feature 8.30 game Thursday night. South Central being a local Greenville team and Rocky Mount from just down the road I would suspect you are going to have to be there before the first game starts if you want a seat in the 8,000 seat Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum.
According to the NCHSAA website the matchups may be reseeded today and Rocky Mount very well may get one of the Guilford county schools in the Thursday game.
The lone Big East girls team finished their season last night losing to South Central 66-35. The Girls regional at Rose High school will feature two conference matchups. South Central and Havelock from the Coastal and Westover and Union Pines from the Cape Fear Valley tangle.

Regional Up For Grabs
Tonight is the sectional finals in 3-A basketball as Mike Gainey will try to get his Gryphon team to the regional for the 3rd time in his coaching career. No final is easy and tonight will be no different as C B Aycock will bring a 24-3 record to town. Wednesday nights win was #20 for the Gryphons this season and they have also lost three times. This for sure is the last home game of the season for after tonight there is only the Eastern Regional and the State championships left
If you want to see what the baseball team has, they have a home practice game today at 4.00pm. Returning the top two pitchers from last year Hobbs Johnson who has signed to play with Carolina in 2011 and rising Junior Benton Moss who has verbally committed to Carolina high hopes abound on the Gryphon diamond.
The Rocky Mount Junior Legion team last summer finished 3rd in the state tournament. There is hope that the holes created with the graduation of the big three of Brian Goodwin, Ben Fish and Dillon Cockrell can be made without much drop off in the offense. We will see. Brand new coach Kent Cox will have big shoes to fill in replacing Pat Smith who brought a baseball state title to Rocky Mount in 08.
Wes Bradshaw gave me a heads up on this and Tuesday when I got home from work I saw it on TV myself. Former Northern Nash basketball player Michael Deloatch and now a senior guard for Norfolk State Spartans made the ESPN plays of the day. In fact it was #3. Deloatch stole a pass near his foul line and streaked to the goal where when he reached the other foul line bounced the ball hard off the floor to make it fly up in the air where he picked it off for a slam dunk. It could have easily been the play of the day.
You know in the last ten years Nash County has become a hot bed for baseball and we now have many college players from this area. Former Northern catcher Bryan Braswell who is the starting behind the plate for Campbell got two hits and drove in two runs in helping the Fighting Camels of Buies Creek take the Wolfpack to extra innings on Tuesday. There are so many players from this area playing college baseball it is hard to keep up with all of them.
I don't know whether you saw this on WRAL-TV last night but the CIAA basketball tournament is underway in Charlotte. Ken Smith of Channel five did a sports report on Chowan College from Murfreesboro who having Joined the CIAA this year is taking part in their first tournament. They have come a long way since 1994 when they first started playing division 3 basketball over being a junior college. My last year as play by play voice of Chowan was 1993 their last year playing as a junior college.
I actually did one game for Chowan in 1994 when they came to Methodest college in Fayetteville. Pat had been transferred by Carolina Telephone back then and we were living there. Bob Burke coach at Chowan brought the radio equipment on the vans with the team and I did the game. Afterwards loaded the equipment back on the van for the trip back while I stayed in Fayetteville.

Sectional Finals Friday Night Includes Gryphon Boys
Now let's be honest with each other for a moment. The night Rocky Mount scorched Northern Nash at home to complete the first round of the Big East play Rocky Mount was playing at a level that you had to say,"man they just might be good enough to win the state". Since then have come eight games and tonight is the first time since that Northern Nash game that the Gryphons have come any where close to the Northern game level.
Being the best team doesn't guarantee you any thing just look at our football in 08. Luck has a hand and tonight for the second time in the playoffs the Gryphons played a #4 seed at home. Darius McKnight got the Gryphons off to a early lead with a barrage of threes in fact three in the first quarter and the Gryphons never looked back downing West Craven 94-65.
RMHS had three players with at least 18 as Detrail Jenkins had 13 rebounds to go with his scoring. Tashawn Mabrey had 20 and McKnight poured in 24. As I was walking out of the gym one of the assistant coaches for the Eagles was over heard saying they were too quick and long for us.
This sets up the sectional final Friday night at home for the Gryphons as they will play C B Aycock who tonight beat D H Conley 71-51. Earlier this week Aycock dispose of Nash Central by 20 after the Bulldogs had just beaten the Gryphons last Wednesday. Friday night's game if this was football would be a Thanksgiving Friday game and if you have ever heard me say this before Only the real teams are left now. Aycock will come to town sporting a 24-3 record.
The only other Big East team still alive coming into tonight will also play Friday as Fike traveled to Hertford County and came home with a 75-66 victory. Fike will travel South Central who now stands at 26-1.
The Lady Gryphons went all the way to Brunswick County and failed to survive the playoffs as they lose tonight to West Brunswick 52-47. Fikes girls played Hertford County and when Friday night comes they will be playing as they beat the Lady Bears 54 to 35. Their draw next is Havelock who beat Hunt 68-50 to end the Warrior season.
Let's talk NFL for just a moment. Today is the first day of the NFL combines in Indianapolis. Among those players that will be there looking to impress NFL scouts will be Stephan Virgil who on this blog was named Rocky Mount's #1 football player for the decade and Virginia Tech Hokie. All of the experts who you might hear talking about the NFL draft position are labeling Stephan as the 11th best defensive back in the draft which would put him near the 4th round. This combine could move him up or down depending on his performance.
Missing from the combine is Terrell Hudgins the all time leading pass receiver in College football history. Despite his college record his best 40 yard runs are on in the 4.6 range and that was not good enough to get invited with other receivers. Not is all lost for the Former Gryphon. More than ten scouts have committed to come to Elon's Pro day. Those experts we were talking about a minute ago are saying Terrell is going somewhere near the 7th round.

A Parents View
I made a promise to myself when my children were born that I would not be in the booth calling games on the radio if they were playing in that game. I also chose not to coach any sport that they played in because I wanted to watch them and being a coach you watch everyone. I just felt as a parent I wanted to be able to watch them from the parent’s point of view over a broadcaster or coach’s view.
I found that when video cameras became the thing that I hated them. I found myself trying to make sure the camera was focused or I had the camera pointed in the right direction instead of enjoying the event as it happened. I had to go back and watch the video to enjoy it. You kind of miss out on it from behind the camera while it is going on live.
Time has passed and only once did I go against my promise. Stephanie’s last year in little league back when we lived in Ahoskie the team had no coach and I took the job. As it turned out none of my children played in a sport where I would have done one of their games from behind the microphone.
My grandfather Doughtie once he hit eighty years old at his birthday parties would always make a little speech and would always finish up by saying I may not be here next year and tear up. He made it to seventeen more parties and teared up at the end of each one.
The older I get the more I get just like him. Monday night, Morgan the last of the Doughtie clan (Stephanie, Brooks, Amy) sang the National Anthem before the start of the Gryphon girl’s basketball playoff game.
Some of you know that Morgan has some health issues right now that are a concern for our family. The doctors say that they are not life threatening. Her health problems can be embarrassing for her but she is a trooper, has missed very little school. She is trying to get to five feet tall which means she is slow a foot which does not lend itself to being athletic. Instead of playing sports she has been team managers in several sports so far in her year an a half of high school life.
I know now why I decided almost thirty years ago not to be behind the mic in any of their games. I wanted to be able to enjoy the moment and not worry about when the next commercial needs to play.
I have in the past had a moment or two that you are so happy for those on the field of play that a choked up moment occurs. It passes quickly and you continue on with the broadcast.
As I stood with my hand over my heart and listened to her sing, I know I could never have described it from behind a mic. She was there doing her best. She may not run fast but from a father’s perspective she ran the opening kickoff back for a touchdown. If great grandfather Roy had of been there he would have probably had a tear. I know I did.
A proud one!

Playoffs Start: Gryphons Home Wednesday
They didn't play all that well tonight but Rocky Mount gutted out a 64-54 victory over Jacksonville and in doing so the Gryphons caught a big break when the a major upset happened to the team who should have been our next opponent. West Brunswick was beaten by the #4 seed from the Coastal conference West Craven 63-50 and in doing so West Craven must come to Rocky Mount Wednesday night.
Jacksonville came out of the box and doubled teamed Tashawn Mabry by putting a man who fronted him and one player who stayed between him and the goal. Mabrey struggled the entire game to get open and even though he scored 23 he had to work for everyone.
The Gryphons trailed early 16-4 before the defense started taking a toll on the Cardinals. Rocky Mount took their first lead at 23-22 and even when they got a working margin Jacksonville stayed with in reach the entire game until the end.
Mabry collect 23 points and Darius McKnight was the only other double digit scorer. Thank goodness for the defense tonight as the Gryphons survive for another day.
West Carteret brought their girls team to Rocky Mount and right off the bat the quick defense of the Lady Gryphons was more than West Carteret could handle. Alexis Farmer who has been nursing a bad ankle returned to action and lead the way for the Lady Gryphons with 16 followed by Danita Whitaker and Tia Hudgins with 11 each.
Even though the Lady Gryphons looked much better on the court than their male counterparts they were not as lucky in the draw for the second round as they will travel Thursday to West Brunsick who beat Washington tonight 68-60. Thursday match up will be #1 seed going up against #1 seed with the Waccamaw conference having the better seeding draw getting the home game.
Boys playoff action around the Big East Nash Central lost at C B Aycock 73-53 while Hunt also bit the dust losing at Triton 67-45. Fike won at home beating Eastern Wayne 63-50. So the two home teams from our conference won while the two road teams lost.
In girls play Fike won at home over C B Aycock 47-32. Nash Central on the road lost 74-44 and also on the road pulling off a big surprise Hunt traveling to Triton won 64-32 over the #1 seed from the Eastern Carolina. Hunt reward is a trip Thursday to Havelock.
Yesterday I told you about South Brunswick who hosted a first round game with a 1-18 record in girls action they lost 48-32 which probably wasn't all that bad a score, but there was another girls game in which Currituck a #2 seed from the Northeastern Coastal hosted Havelock and Havelock won the game 71-15. Currituck was 1-17 and got a first round home game.
There is a new sports reporter on the beat for the "Rocky Mount Telegram" tonight. Eric Cammilota who's first day on the job was covering Gryphon Basketball. Eric a Boston University graduate got every thing he needed to know about our area tonight as I sat beside him and gave him all the facts. Welcome to the area Eric!

One And Done Time
Tonight begins the High school basketball playoffs and either you win and move on or put up the equipment until next year. Rocky Mount begins their playoff journey at home as the girls host West Carteret and the boys Jacksonville.
Tonight Morgan Doughtie sings the National Anthem around 6.00pm just before the girls game. This time of year I am at WHIG-TV at 6.00 doing the Relay For Life show but will be late tonight in order to watch Morgan. I'll be back to the game as soon as TV is over.
I am not a fan of split conferences. Some teams are 3-A while some are 4-A all playing in the same league. Hunt who is the #3 seed from our conference. Should they win tonight and West Brunswick wins as a #2 seed from the Waccamaw conference then Hunt second round game would be at West Brunswick. West Brunswick is 1-18 on the year an get a home game tonight in the first round. West Brunswick is the second best 3-A in a mostly 4-A league. To say the least there are holes in the seeding system in high school sports.
The two biggest division one baseball players from our area last year have finished their first weekend of college baseball. Rocky Mount's Brian Goodwin started all three games in right field for Carolina. His first college hit was a triple and drove in two runs. For the weekend Brian had three RBI's and on another at bat advance a runner into scoring position that eventually scored.
Tyler Joyner of Northern Nash took the mound for ECU yesterday in the top of the second inning with ECU already down 5-1 and runners on second and third. He pitched 1.1 innings of relief and gave up three runs on three hits. This was a real hot spot to bring in a freshman pitching against the #2 team in the country in Virginia. This just shows you what Billy Godwin thinks of TJ. He had enough confidence in him to bring him in to pitch his first college baseball game at the most important time for ECU all weekend. The Pirates lost 14-11.
The Charlotte Bobcats as we speak are now 27-27 on the season. Last week they lost to the New Jersey Nets the worse team in pro basketball, then Friday night they beat LaBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers the best team in basketball. Just shows you what and average team can do, be the great one night and sorry the next.
Just a note I will blog after tonight's playoff games so Tuesday's blog will come by 11.00pm tonight.

Basketball Playoffs Set
There is a big difference between basketball and football when it comes to going the the North Carolina High School Athletic Association website when the brackets are released. The main reason is football is seeded by the NCHSAA on the Saturday of the announcement where basketball is totally based on you conference seeding. Unless there is a #4 seed winning a conference tournament just about all seedings are known even before the conferences hold their tournaments.
Tonight when I went on line I had no problem what so ever of getting the playoff brackets. The last several years there has been so many people trying to get the seeding for football that the computers at the NCHSAA have locked up causing chaos for any one wanting to see the brackets.
The #1 seed Rocky Mount of the Big East will play at home Monday against Jacksonville. Big East #2 Fike is at home hosting Southern Wayne. Hunt the Big East boys #3 hits the road playing at South Central. The last representative from the Big East Nash Central is also traveling to C B Aycock.
The girls bracket has Big East #1 The Lady Gryphons home Monday night hosting West Carteret. Since several of the girls basketball players also were on the Volleyball team West Carteret was the team as a #4 seed that knocked the Lady Gryphon Volleyball team out of the playoffs in the second round this past fall. The Big East #2 Fike is home against C B Aycock. Hunt as the #3 will travel down I-95 to Dunn and play Triton. Finally #4 seed Nash Central will take on South Central in Winterville.
I just did catch the end of the Brain game today on Channel Five . Looks like the Rocky Mount team easily advance in the Brain Game playoffs.
Carolina loses again in basketball. State finally made a shot towards the end of a game and Wake Forest looked like they wanted to be any where but Raleigh.
ECU who has the toughest baseball schedule of anybody in the county the first week of the season got revenge with Virginia today. Freshman John Wooten the son of former Gryphon great Sonny Wooten hit a home run in leading the Pirates. Northern Nash remembers Wooten from the Eastern Regionals last season.
I promised to talk about our local guys playing for Wesleyan today. Charlie Long has seven Nash County players, Northern has three players Daniel Moore who is roaming the outfield, Tyler Clark is starting as a freshman behind the plate where he has a good view of his dad's name on the outfield wall in left. Andrew Webb is getting action at second base and as a relief pitcher.
Southern Nash's Brian Allen is playing third. Gryphon Chad Womble has pitched out of the bull pen so far and Eric Mull gives Faith christian a player playing college ball.

It's Fike's Big East Tournament
Those in attendance Friday night saw why both the Nash Central girls and boys made the tournament championship finals. Terry Cash's Lady Bulldogs lead for much of the game only to succumb late in the third quarter to the Lady Golden Demons. Once Fike got the lead they had all they could do to hold on to the lead and victory as Fike girls beat The Lady Bulldogs 56-51.
In the night cap Nash central stayed in the game with strong board play from Brandon Thomas and Terrell Copeland. Trailing by nine at one point Dominque Holloway found the range in the fourth quarter but the Bulldogs could never quite catch up and fall to Fike 64-60.
Nash Central despite their good tournament only will finish as a #4 seed from the Big East and start the playoffs at C B Aycock. The Bulldog girls think they will start at either Eastern Wayne or Southern Wayne. They will know for sure when the brackets are released Saturday afternoon.
The Monday night double header for Rocky Mount will find West Craven taking on the Lady Gryphons and Jacksonville providing the boys their first round match.
Friday was the opening of the college baseball season and former Gryphon Brian Goodwin started in right field for Mike Fox at UNC. Carolina won 6-5 in ten innings and Goodwin was 0-4 but did have and RBI. He also caught two fly balls in right. Regardless of how Brian's career goes from here on he will always be able to say that he started his first game as a freshman at Carolina and Fox had him hitting fifth in the lineup.
Rumors are hot that freshman Tyler Joyner at ECU will be the starting pitcher for the Pirates on Tuesday. The former Knight of Northern Nash is part of the Babe Ruth dynasty that Nash county had going when Joyner, Goodwin and Ben Fish and many others went to the Babe Ruth World Series twice as 13 and 14 year olds.
Speaking of Ben Fish, Campbell open their baseball season Friday but looks like Ben may find the pine a lot this year as former Knight Bryan Braswell a senior for Campbell is the starting catcher and he opened the season going four for five and had four rbi's.
If you watched Nash County's American legion team last summer you saw former Nash Central Bulldog Xavier Macklin hit a home run about every other game. Friday North Carolina A&T opened their baseball season, you know the X man knocked one out for the Aggies. Also former Bulldog Alex Pearce got a rbi in action at UNC Pembroke this week.
Former Gryphon Jim Leggett after sitting out last season after his shoulder injury his senior season for the Gryphons is pitching for Pitt CC this spring. He is joined by Northern Nash Knights Zack Woodley and Mike Williams.
Boy all of this baseball and we have not said one word about all the locals playing for Wesleyan. We will do that next time we talk baseball which could be everyday between now and end of July.
Boy I'm tire as when I got home from Joining Wes Bradshaw in covering the games of the Big East Tournament basketball for the "Stretchlon Sports Show" I have been surfing the net looking at all these scores from our guys.

Not Again
I don't know whether it is because it was being played at Hunt high school or it was their opponent Nash Central. The Big East basketball tournament continued to be a horror story for the Rocky Mount Gryphons last night as the Nash Central girls knocked off the #1 seeded Lady Gryphons 53-52. This completes a couple of nights of horror for Rocky Mount high school as both the boys and girls team the regular season champions fall in the semi's against Nash Central.
Tonight Wes Bradshaw and myself will be on site at Hunt to cover both championship games which can be seen later on WHIG-TV and "The Stretchlon Sports Show".
Today is regional wrestling day for ten grapplers at Rocky Mount High. The site is South Central High school. Last week was team week where each wrestler's score was added to his team score to advance the team. This weekends regional is if you win your match you advance.
Wrestling is a sport where you are face to face with an opponent Those there to watch will be focused directly on you. There is no taking a play off because if you do you will lose in an instant. If your match goes the distance it is six minutes of complete strain. The successful wrestlers will have six to eight matches in order to qualify for the State championships.
I am having a hard time getting into the Winter Olympics this year. Last night they had men's figure skating on. I hate to say this but men dancing on ice just doesn't do it for men. Now if they had a barrell for them to jump over that would be different.
Today at 11.00am Tiger speaks. I could care less about what he says. just two years ago there was no doubt that he would past Jack Nicklaus and win more than 18 major golf tournaments. Tiger's knee injury and now a eight iron to his skull has taken almost two years of Tiger"s prime golf life away from him. It is no longer a for sure thing that Tiger will pass Nicklaus's 18 majors.

Gryphons And The Big East Tournament: Short
The #1 seeded Gryphons of Rocky Mount High School vision of a regular season and tournament sweep in basketball lasted until they took the court last night at Hunt. Nash Central tired of losing three times this season to the Gryphons would not become a four time loser as the Bulldogs upset Rocky Mount 73-67.
The Bulldogs will play for the conference tournament championship at 7.30 Friday night at Hunt High. The Gryphon girls put their #1 seed on the line tonight as they meet Nash Centrals girls in the 6.00pm game tonight.
I found out for sure yesterday from Mike Gainey that sectional play for the boys and girls begins Monday night at home. Get there early because Morgan Doughtie sings the National Anthem right about 6.00pm.
Morgan is spending the spring as manager/scorekeeper for softball and practice is well under way for spring sports. It is hard to practice with a winter coat on whether it soccer or baseball.
Duke down by 12 at the half at Miami last night charged back to win. I think Duke's biggest problem is their team speed is slow. During the NCAA they will run into some one quick and they will also probably not shoot well on three pointers and exit NCAA's.
N C State lead by nine with ten minutes to go only to make one three pointer with a minute to go and missed 14 other shots. Only two of those 14 missed shots were inside.
Tiger Woods will speak on Friday. I truly believe Tiger doesn't have to apologize to me. Yes he at some point must face the world but the only people he needs to apologize to is his wife and family.
I figure Tiger will tell us he is truly sorry for his actions and mistakes. You know a mistake is something you do one time and didn't mean to do it. Like a bank robber who has robbed twenty banks, cheating on your wife is a habit and the mistake is getting caught. I am sure he is truly sorry for getting caught.

Big East Tournament Begins
The Big East tournament begins tonight at least from the Rocky Mount perspective. It is of course the semi finals before the Gryphons step into action and they have drawn cross town rival Nash Central who won by ten Monday over Sourthern Nash. The Gryphon have already beaten the Bulldogs three times this year and there is an old saying about being able to beat a team three times in a season. I wonder what the saying is about beating a team four times. Regardless, the Gryphons had better be ready to play.
The Lady Gryphons know who they draw on Thursday as the Nash Central girls handled Northern Nash last night in the opening round of girls action. The girls are faced with the same problem as the boys in sweeping Nash Central three times during the regular season. I would suspect that the Lady Gryphons understand about the need to be ready to play after losing at Northern Friday night in a game that they did not need to win to be conference regular season champs.
I hear through the grapevine that there is a good chance that both the boys and girls will open sectional play next Monday night at home in a double header. Both as #1 seeds. Who they would play is up in the air but as soon as we know more we will pass it along.
Our world today we live in is a cut cost world. Can you imagine what the heating bill is at any high school and it surely does make sense to play both teams on the same night and get a larger crowd to both than the boys play a single game Monday and the girls play a single game on Tuesday.
Those of you Carolina fans that were hoping for a season ending rally and a bid to the NCAA can just about forget the NIT after last night. Carolina has looked awful asgainst everybody but N C State.
I don't know how to judge the basketball world we live in. I thought Wake Forest was the best team in the ACC and they blew a 11 point lead in the last ten minutes at Virginia Tech Last night.
I am not one of these fans that will not pull for your team if you are the last team on earth. When the playoffs are on going I will pull for any ACC team to win to make the conference look good and of course any Big Four team. Growing up I use to shoot free throws just like Larry Miller who use to put one foot at the foul line and the other about six inches behind the line.
Former Carolina player George Karl yesterday found out that he has throat cancer. A couple of years ago he had Prostate cancer. In making his announcement yesterday that he was going to step aside from coaching the Denver Nuggetts until he had finished his treatments, you could hear in his voice the trauma that people go through any time the word cancer enters their life. I'll be praying for George Karl to win his battle and hope you do too. You can also join the battle and sign up for a Relay for Life team if you haven't already. This years Relay is April 23rd and 24th at the Rocky Mount Athletic Complex. To join a team go to Nash County's Relay for Life website. Just goggle Nash County relay and it will pop up.

Year Round School
Wake County is going through a mess right now with the controversy over year round schools. If you have ever had a child in it, you probably like it. Like most government projects it is very hard to make a good decision on it when most people have more than one child. Then that means you have a child in traditional and one in year round and totally chaos ensues.
We found in our house when Morgan went to year round at Winstead Elementary you could hardly tell any difference in time in and out of school. They had three weeks out in March and September and all of June. We enjoyed our year round experience.
Looking at high school sports year round would be perfect for athletics. Normally the year starts the week after Fourth of July. Fall sports could start practice and begin their games the first week in August. Football state championships would be over by about Thanksgiving just in time for basketball to begin playing on December first.
Football and basketball step all over each other now especially if you have a football team that survives the playoff to the third, fourth or finals. Does anybody remember the day when the first football game didn't occur until September or basketball until December first?
Times change for it use to be that schools didn't open until September to let the farmers have the workers to pick cotton or finish tobacco. Today farmers have macchinery that picks twelve rows at a time so laborers are not needed during school times.
I think year round is coming whether you are for it or not. The only way to find out for sure whether it works or not is all students within the system to go year round. You can't have first through fourth grade on year round and every one else doing traditional. That is of course the way our government works so it seems the right way to them.

Second Season Begins
The Big East Basketball tournament gets underway tonight and Rocky Mount will be in scout mode. The Gryphons as the top seed sits tonight waiting for the semi finals on Wednesday. Mike Gainey's game of interest will be Nash Central and Southern Nash as the winner gets the Gryphons Wednesday.
Pam Gainey's girls basketball team sits during Tuesdays first round for the girls tournament. She will intently be focusing on Nash Central and Northern Nash as the Lady Gryphons draw the winner Thursday night.
If all goes as planned this week the Stretchlon Sports Show will cover both final games Friday night. I will do play by play of the girls game and Wes Bradshaw will colorize the game while when the boys play we will switch.
Spring sports can officially hit the practice field this week. Just about all high school teams play their first games March first. College baseball begins Friday. ECU will find out right off the bat what they have this year playing Virginia this weekend in Greenville and next weekend South Carolina. Both Virginia and South carolina are preseason top twenty teams. Either weekend will be outstanding to watch if you can stand the frostbite.
Pot holes are every where. Yesterday the Daytonia 500 stopped twice to repair a pot hole between turns one and two. it took about two hours for just one. How long will it take to repair the pot holes in front of McDonalds on Sunset Avenue? There is about fifty yards of pot holes one after the other.
108,000 people went to Dallas to watch the NBA all star game. About 70,000 of them had to watch it on the big screen to see it. Kobe and LeBron get all the attention in the NBA but Dwayne Wade is a darn good player.

One And Done Time
If you are not first or second in your conference standings heading into every conference high school basketball tournament this week then you season is on the line. One more loss and your season is over.
This week is not one of those weeks for either Rocky Mount team as the boys and girls are #1 seeds. They will head into the sectionals regardless of what happens this week. They would like however to get on a roll that they can carry into sectional play. There is nothing like adding another trophy to the showcase.
Boys play begins Monday at Hunt and the girls start Tuesday. RM boys don't see action until Wednesday and the Girls wait for their semi's Thursday.
The Winter Olympics are under way and I have not watched any of it as of yet. I still would like to know why basketball is played in the Summer Olympics instead of the winter.
The Carolina Hurricanes head into the Olympic break one of the hottest teams in hockey. The last time I mentioned them they were 11 points out of the playoffs with 27 games to play. There are now 20 games left and they have shrunk the points back to only nine. It is very hard in hockey to gain ground when every team that gets a game into overtime wins a point.
The Bobcats are sixth in the NBA East. If this continues it will be their first playoffs ever. But the NBA regular season still has to mid April to end the regular season.
If you are a Carolina fan there is at least one team that you are better than. That's N C State. I think the Pack has packed it in for this season and played miserable yesterday in Chapel Hill. Finally towards the end Carolina pulled away.
In sports every week there is a new conclusion who is the best and Duke is near the top, but if there is one team in the ACC capable of making the final four to me it looks like Wake Forest. The Deacs have some ball players.

NO Help Needed
Unlike the girls basketball team, going into tonight's action against Northern Nash Rocky Mount knew if they won, they won the conference. If they lost they could lose the top seeding in next week's conference tournament as well as a #1 seeding in the sectionals.
There was no more motivation needed as Rocky Mount pour it to Northern Nash from the git go in downing the Knights 90-63. Doing so the Gryphons wrap up the conference regular season crown and a bye until Wednesday in the Big East tournament to be played at Hunt.
Tashawn Mabrey and Darius McKnight combined for 57 points 32 and 25 to lead the way for the Gryphons. Rocky Mount finishes the regular season 18-2.
I told Morgan Friday afternoon that the girls might lose tonight due in part to a improving Northern girls team but also that with Fike losing twice this week and the conference crown being hand delivered to the Lady Gryphons on a silver platter their motivation might not be there tonight.
Between an ever improving Knights squad loaded with freshmen who now have beaten Fike and Rocky Mount both at the time both were either tied or in first place or no mojo the Knights beat the Lady Gryphons 36-35. The Lady Gryphons still hold the conference crown and the #1 seed and a bye in the Big East tournament until Thursday at Hunt. The Lady Gryphons finish the regular season at 16-4.
Carolina got more bad news today for it's floundering basketball team. Ed Davis broke his wrist Wednesday against Duke and is out at least six week and the way this season is going for Carolina the season might be over by then.
Carolina and State have over the history of the ACC finished first or second many times, but in ACC basketball history neither has ever finished 7th and 8th in the old ACC or 11 and 12th in the expanded ACC.
As I sit in front of this computer on a Saturday morning just after midnight both Carolina and State have a combined four wins between them. They play each other again today in Chapel Hill. Snow is falling and who knows how much we might get before it is over but you can believe if no one shows up to watch the game (for lack of interest) we can blame it on the snow anyway.
Has anyone thought much about this. Carolina has been on a down hill spiral ever since Roy Williams threw that Presbyterian fan out of the Dean Dome.
Dear Roy: Next time you play a religious school be nice YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN.
Champions
The second day in a row the Lady Gryphon basketball team awoke to find out that Fike has lost the night before. In doing so this time after the Lady Gryphons had won over Hunt Wednesday night the Fike lost give Pam Gainey and the Lady Gryphons the first ever Big East 3-A basketball title.
So what do you do to celebrate. The girls basketball team traveled to Durham Thursday night to be in attendance at the N C State-Duke womens basketball game held at Cameron Indoor Stadium. Duke won 70-39.
The boys can clinch first place tonight but they must beat arch rival Northern Nash at Northern to do it. The big East basketball tournament begins Monday at Hunt and we know for sure the Lady Gryphons will not play until Thursday. To keep from playing Monday a boys victory would put them in the Wednesday Semi's.
I hate to have to say this but Rocky Mount High School got a state champion over last weekend and here it is six days later and just now talking about it.
Hannah McMillan a senior at RMHS won the North Carolina Jr. Miss Scholarship competition which was held last weekend in Greensboro. This is a big deal and there has hardly been any mention of this from any body.
The Jr. Miss main focus is academic excellence, phyical fitness, interview, talent and and self expression.
I use to be in the Ahoskie JC's back in the 80's and we sponsored the Jr Miss there. I for several years worked with the judges and was there during the interview process.
I remember one year a girl who I thought had a real shot at winning was marked down in the interview because on her Jr Miss application UNC was not one of the school she wanted to attend. You might say ,Oh the judge pulled for the Tar Heels but no. This young lady was a finalist for the Morehead Scholarship. Her answer was not very convincing as to why she didn't want to go to UNC but was going through the interviews for the scholarship.
McMillan will now compete for the National Jr. Miss in June in Mobile Alabama. Good going Hannah. I am sorry it took so long to mention it.
Tonight basketball at Northern to finish the regular season in basketball. Thursday Northern Nash hosted the 3rd round of the 3-A wrestling duels. Northern survived as the only Big East team to get out of the first round but lost to Havelock one of the best wrestling teams in the state at any level.

People Watched, Or Did They
The numbers were released earlier this week that the Super Bowl was the most watch television show ever. More than 106 million people watched.
The Neilson Company who does the ratings has 5,000 people across the nation who have black boxes much like what pilots have in cockpits of aircraft. Those black boxes record those 5,000 peoples viewing habits. If you watch any one channel for more than ten minutes in any hour you are deemed to have watched that show.
The Super Bowl numbers broke the record which had been held by the final episode of M*A*S*H in 1983 which had 105 million watchers. If I remember correctly the final M*A*S*H was a one hour final show. The Super Bowl is basically a four hour event.
I personally did not watch the Super bowl from start to finish. I did change channels four or five times and every time I came back to the game I watch at least ten minutes before I turned away. So if I was a person who Neilson had a black box in my house then I watched the Super Bowl at least four times. I would show up on the graphs as four people watching the game.
It took four hours to get 106 million to watch the Super Bowl while back in 1983 105 million watched M*A*S*H in one hour. You know I can make these numbers look any way I want to.
The #1 watched show of all time is still the when Elvis appeared on the Ed Sullivan show back in 1957. 60 million people watch at a time there were only 74 million TV's in this country. That works out 81% of all TV’s at the time watched Elvis gyrate. The second most watch show percentage wise is Lucy Goes to the Hospital in 1953 when 71% of all TV’s watch as little Ricky was born.
Of course back in those days there was only three choices on the TV. So while Elvis had 81% watching, Milton Berle has a bad night on the other channel. By the way did you know that Ed Sullivan had Elvis on because two months earlier Milton Berle had Elvis sing and on that night he killed Ed Sullivan in the ratings? Oh yeah, It is only a myth that Ed Sullivan only showed Elvis from the waist up. All you have to do is go to You Tube and watch an old replay of it.
There are more the 300 million people who live in the good old USA today. Back in the fifties we had around 180 million. We have 327 million tv's in this country or about one for every person. So in my computerized brain doing the new math I was taught back in the 60's only 33% of all tv's were tuned to the Super Bowl.
You would think with all the hype made of the game and all the conversation made about the commercials you would think everyone in America would have at least watched for ten minutes. Only one out of three even watched ten minutes. Maybe the Super Bowl is not as important as we think in the life of every day America.

Senior Night
Rocky Mount High school played their last regular season Basketball game at home Wednesday night and both varsity teams took care of business.
The Lady Gryphons awoke this morning to hear that neighbors Northern Nash had upset the Fike girls last night and by doing so gave the Lady Gryphons a game lead in the standings heading into the night with Hunt.
Buoyed by the good news from Northern Rocky Mount came out of the gate much quicker than last night and put 21 points on the board in the first quarter and lead by eight. Half time the lead had grown to 13 and the second half was even Steven as the Gryphons Ladies win 59-46.
Danita Whitaker continues to dominate inside for the Lady Gryphons as she lead the way with 18 points followed by Tia Hudgins with 12 and Marquita Hines with ten. The Lady Gryphons can clinch another regular season title Friday night but the #1 seed in the upcoming Big East Tournament is not guaranteed unless they win Friday at Northern.
Between the games all of the winter sports seniors were honored and when it got down to basketball the Gryphons took control early and lead 19-9 at the end of the first quarter. Rocky Mount opened the second quarter scoring the first twelve points and pretty much tucked the game away.
Tashawn Mabry had 20 point at the half which was more than Hunt's total of 17. The second half belonged to Darius McKnight and William Young as the two guards controlled the ball and McKnight hit four three pointer in the half.
Mabry lead the way with 22 followed by Darius Mcknight with 18 and Young threw in 17.
The Gryphons can win their first Big East basketball title with a win at Northern on Friday night.
Tuesday the wrestling team traveled to C B Aycock in the team first round playoffs and were beaten in the first round. Next week individual wrestlers will try to advance in the state playoffs hoping for individual state titles.
Tomorrow I will discuss the TV ratings for the Super Bowl.

Gryphons Rebound
The Rocky Mount boys and girls basketball teams rebounded to night after both being clipped by Fike last Friday night. The start of the last week of the regular season the Gryphons hosted cross county rival Southern Nash and neither Gryphon team was very hospitable. The girls stay tied for first with a 52-36 win while the boys won by twenty 79-59.
The Lady Gryphons were lead in the second half by a very aggressive Danita Whitaker as she scored 12 of her 16 points in the second half and got ten rebounds most came after halftime. Tia Hudgins and Latoya Applewhite hit double digits with 11 and 10 each.
Southern Nash out rebounded the Lady Gryphons 36-29 but the difference in the game was the turnover difference. The Gryphons only committed 14 but the Gryphon defense caused 32.
The boys action saw the Gryphons trying to hold on to their one game conference lead and if one thing stood out to me was that Southern has about three players that can play with any body. Their problem is Rocky Mount has ten who can play with anybody and the Gryphons slowly pulled away for the 20 point win.
As usual Tashawn Mabry lead the way with 24, followed by William Young who tossed in four three pointers in collecting 16 points. Detrail Jenkins was the only other Gryphon to hit double figures.
The missed game last week due to the snow will be made up Wednesday night as Hunt comes to Rocky Mount. Wayne Wallace who does double duty as NC Wesleyan and Rocky Mount on the PA will be at Wesleyan Wednesday night so I will be behind the PA mic for Senior night.
Saw this today on Nick Phillips Blog concerning Gryphon Wrestler Chandler Phillips. Chandler who won the conference crown last Saturday at Northern Nash in the 140 pound weight class won his fourth conference championship as a Gryphon wrestler.
I don't know how many times that has ever been done at Rocky Mount or any where for that matter but winning four straight conference titles is close to winning the lottery, it is not done every day.
His freshman year, Chandler won the conference championship as a 112 pounder. Growing each year as a sophomore he won as a 125 pounder and as a junior won the 135 division. Going into the Tuesday night's first round of the playoff Chandler Phillips was 30-2 this year wrestling for the Gryphons.
With these kind of numbers Chandler has to be considered one of the greatest Gryphon wrestlers of all time.

Who Dat
The New Orleans Saints have won the Super Bowl. They won not with great defense or a ride up and down the field offense. They won because they wanted it more.
The Colts won the first quarter but the last three were owned by the Saints. It was not because they were better but because they risked every thing when the Colts chose to be conservative.
Down 10-3 just before the half Shaun Peyton and the Saints went for a touchdown on a fourth and one at the one. They failed but the conservative Colts tried to run out the half and gave the Saints a field goal on the last play.
The Saints tried an on side kick to begin the third quarter and scored a touchdown before the Colts touched the ball. Instead of up 10-3 at the half the Colts trailed 13-10 midway in the third quarter.
The Saints best defense was keeping the ball away from the Colts and it worked.
The Saints winning the Super Bowl is like the Red Sox winning the World Series in 2004. The lovable losers are finally winners.
What can you say about North Carolina and North Carolina State in ACC basketball this year. I had thought that Georgia Tech might be the best in the ACC, but after watching their collapse aganst N C State Saturday I think this is the worse ACC league in all my years of watchin it. I had been to many games before but along about 1962 is when I was old enough to understand that I loved watching ACC Basketball.
If this is the worse league ever what can be said for the Tar Heels and Wolfpack the worse two team in in the worse league. Not much!
The final week of the high school basketball season is upon us. The Gryphon boys lead the league by one game but three big games to play this week. The girls are in a flatfooted tie with Fike heading down the stretch. The conference tournament is next week at Hunt.

It's Time For The Super Bowl
Everyone is in a lather over the anticipation of today's Super Bowl. The first time ever two teams will meet that both started out the season 13-0. If you look in the past, overall the Super Bowl has been big disappointments. They hardly ever come down to the last minute like last year.
Indianapolis is lead by Peyton Manning and if you believe every thing over the last two weeks he is next to God on a football field. Dree Brees since his departure from San Diego has been the best quarterback in football according to the numbers. The Colts are living off of Manning will pull us through while the Saints are selling the we want to do it for those in New Orleans and the hurricane in 2004.
Both teams numbers are inflated by playing mediocre schedules. The sixteen teams the Saints have played averaged only 5.2 wins the entire season. The Colts a whopping 5.8. Both have feasted off the pitiful.
The only playoff team that New Orleans beat the entire regular season was New England, while the Colts beat Arizona, New England and Baltimore.
They say that defenses win championships. New Orleans gave up at least twenty points twelve times. The colts were better allowing twenty only five times.
The news media would make you think that Peyton Manning had never lost a game in his life but heading into today's Super Bowl he is only 9-8 in playoff games. Drew Brees is 3-4.
All indications are this will be the highest scoring game in Super Bowl history. A high scoring game will only be exciting if it is 38-35. 45-20 will not be exciting.
I have no dog in this fight and I don't have a hatred for either team so when the game is over I will not cry if one loses over the other. Everyone wants this game to be a 51-45 game but I think conservatism will take over rather quickly.
I think the Colts have the better defense and will some how make the game a Colt win.
I'll take the Colts 31-20.

Stale Gryphons Pounded By Fike
The worst thing about being out of school for three days this week meant that basketball went eight days without playing. Tonight a rusty Gryphon boys team can't keep up with Fike as they whip the Gryphons 86-63.
Despite the loss the Gryphons still have a game lead over both Hunt and Fike as the final week of the regular season is yet to unfold next week. The Gryphons are now 6-1 in conference play and lose for only the second time all year and fall to 15-2.
It was a closer game for the Lady Gryphons but at the end of overtime the Lady Golden Demons had taken down the Lady Gryphons by a 62-58 score. By winning both teams have one loss in conference and on the season the Lady Gryphons are 14-3 overall.
Next week is a three game week for the Gryphon teams with home game Tuesday and Wednesday. Southern Nash tries the Gryphons on for size Tuesday followed by Hunt Wednesday. The regular season ends next Friday night at Northern.
The Jim Clack Foundation is having a kickoff Sunday afternoon at the Gateway center in Rocky Mount. The newly formed organization is having their first public outing as the are looking for people to come check out the foundation have some free food and see what the Jim Clack Foundation is all about.
Jim Clack a former Rocky Mount High Blackbird of the sixties was a two time state football champion on the 62 and 63 Blackbird teams. Played his college ball at Wake Forest and spent eleven years in pro football including being on two Pittsburgh Steelers Super Bowl Championship teams.
Clack was the center in the infamous Miracle at the Meadowlands in 1978 when the Giants were running out the clock when on the last play the quarterback Joe Pisarcik fumbled the snap and Herman Edwards of the Philadelphia Eagles picked the ball up and scored as time ran out.
Once Clack retired from football he moved back to Rocky Mount where he lived several years. Earlier this decade Clack fought cancer and from his experience he had hopes of starting a Foundation to help others in their fight. Before that dream could come true Clack died in 2006. Many of his local friends have follow through on Clacks dream by starting the Jim Clack Foundation.
It all starts Sunday at 4.00pm and you can stay as long as you like right up to the end of the Super Bowl.

Bad weather?
The temperature right now is keeping buses on time this morning and once again faith in the weather forecast that we will be dumped on today in the form of rain. If this becomes a missed forecast and school gets out early basketball will be in jeopardy and the dilemma of where and when this game gets moved to.
If the weather cooperates the Gryphons play at Fike tonight. The girls game is a battle for first place since Fike has but one loss. When you are going to play 40% of your conference schedule in eight days every game is important because losses are harder to get over without practice time to correct problems.
Coach K was worried about last nights game with Georgia Tech and asked the students to be unreal with the atmosphere in Cameron Indoor. I couldn't tell any difference in the students last night because they are always unreal. If you have never had the pleasure to be at a Duke game it is worth it to go. I wish I knew how they entire student body is so choreographed with their chants. You must have to take a class in order to be allowed to go sit in the student section at Duke. The students are always a factor at a Duke game.
Carolina loses another one last night but as a Wolfpack fan everyone needs to take it out on Carolina this year. If the Tar heels find someone who thinks they are a point guard they have the inside people to dominant next year. I have said this many times Big people can't score unless someone gets them the ball. Carolina has scoring guards who think they are point guards, a bad combination.
This Sunday is Super Bowl and I think this game is more a toss up than the experts are telling everyone. I'm holding off on my pick until Sunday and we see what the final injury report shows.
Sunday also marks the 37th year in a row that the ACC has had a basketball game as part of the Super Bowl ten hours of pregame hype. Can you Remember the very first Sunday game?
David Thompson tipped a missed shot in at the buzzer at Maryland in 1973 and the Wolfpack beat the Terps 85-84 as State was on their way to an undefeated season.

What A Difference A Year Makes
Last year at this time Gryphon football players were signing the dotted lines to college scholarships. Only seven local players inked contracts to college yesterday and none were Gryphons.
Monster offensive lineman Tacoby Cofield of the State Champion Tarboro Vikings lead the way signing on with Duke. Six Southern Nash players reaped the rewards of the Firebirds making it all the way to the eastern Finals.
Finally school is back in and after being out three days and last night Morgan's Face Book page was swirling on whether there was school today or any delays. I think the school system decisions to be out three days was exactly what was necessary. The only place that I have seen that stated school was back today was on the Nash Rocky Mount website. We got a call late yesterday from the telephone notification system which I think is a great idea but the only thing they stated was a meeting schedule for Thursday night had been cancelled. Not one mention whether as to say school was on or not.
Next week will be a three game final week of the regular season for Big East basketball. Friday night the Gryphons travel to Fike for this week's regular game.
Next week the Gryphons play home Tuesday to Southern Nash, Wednesday Hunt is at our place making up the game missed this past Tuesday. Friday will bring on a trip to Northern Nash to put a capper on the regular season.
The boys have a two game lead and the girls are one ahead and these next four games in eight days could turn the whole season around if either Gryphon team loses momentum from the lack of practice during the snow days.
I have to finish up on this note this morning. Did you see Virginia last night use those electronic dog collar devices on the N C State guards. I may have been the only person to notice them but Virginia had dog collars attached to each State player. You know what I'm talking about the invisible fence that when your dog gets to close to leaving your yard an electric shock pulsates in the dog neck making the dog stay away from the street.
Virginia used those devices on any N C State player who came near the three point line last night and made them back up staying away and not crossing the three point line. It must have been inserted in the ball too because State very seldom even passed the ball across the three point line.
State has two of the greatest guards in the history of the Wolfpack sitting on the bench coaching but N C State has the worse guard play of any team in the league.

Schools Out One More Day
If I don't have a ball game to go to on any day after work, you can bet I am watching The Young and the Restless at 4.00pm every day that I can. Just a little past four the info came across the screen that Nash Rocky Mount was a no go again on Wednesday. A few minutes later the telephone call came from RMHS that school was out for one more day but additional information about when the three makeup days will be made up.
You can bet school will be back to normal on Thursday ( maybe a two hour delay) when ever they announce the makeup days even before the latest weather closings are over. The school system relies heavily on the weather forecast and they were right over night last night. It did not freeze as I got in my truck this morning I could hear the dripping off my roof.
This weather this week has pushed basketball into a squeeze. One game is missing right now and when do you make it up? Last Friday's game was pushed up when the weather forecast called for the snow that school is out for now. Once the announcement is made today on Go or no go for school Thursday. Unlike last week's game being pushed up school was in session.
Both the boys and girls are having great years in basketball and I would hate to see them play Thursday without any practice this week. My guess would be Saturday would be the earliest that the Hunt game would be made up or next week will be a three game week. Friday night's game at Fike will go on as scheduled that is of course assuming school will be back to normal then.
I want to change gears completely right now. You may have heard all the controversy going on right now involving Tim Tebow and the commercial that will run in Sunday's Super Bowl involving Tebow's mother talking about abortions. If you believe in anything in the Bible then you know the Bible is against abortions.
Every game that Tim Tebow has ever played he has had a bible verse in his eye shading. I have never thought that Tebow had much potential in the NFL as a quarterback. After last week's Senior Bowl performance he will be lucky to get drafted by any body in the NFL.
I consider myself a Christian and like Tebow am against abortions. The other side is coming out of the wood work to claim that the ad should not run. But, I don't see the other side spending the 3 million dollars to defend their message.
When Tebow graduates college he will have no guarantee that he will have a job. I wish my faith was as strong as Tebow's to make a stand for what I think is right regardless of the consequences.
Who knows the next Billy Graham might be Tim Tebow.

Weather Messing with High school Sports
It is hard to decide when to make up a make up game when you don't know when you are going back to school. Tonight's home game with Hunt in basketball is off until at least both Wilson and Nash County schools get back into school. My guess is Thursday night but don't hold me to that.
I don't know how I missed this but former Rocky Mount High player Stephan Virgil played in the East West Allstar Game January 23rd. The Virginia Tech senior will now wait on the NFL draft in April.
Last night I was on WHIG-TV as the Nash County Relay For Life began their annual preview show which will run until the week after this year's relay which is on the weekend of April 23rd and 24th. Last night's show featured a non relay event the Jim Clack Foundation.
This weekend the Former Blackbird's foundation which has just recently been founded will have their inaugural event. It is being called The Jim Clack Foundation's Super Sunday Kickin Cancer football Party. It will be held at the Gateway Center starting at 4.00pm and will last until after the Super Bowl game is over.
The Foundation's goal it to help raise funds to train mentors to help with a cancer Patience's comfort, compassion and answers to anyone with Cancer. The event is free and everyone is invited to come by and stay a while. Clack's two Super Bowl Rings will be on display at the event. The Foundation's headquarters will be here in Rocky Mount.
Julius Pepper's agent is claiming that the former Southern Nash Firebird will be on the open market this year, as to this point the Carolina Panthers have not made an offer for Peppers to return next year to Charlotte. Peppers made more than a million dollars per game last year playing for the Panthers. Good luck to him trying to get more from any NFL team the year before a labor dispute.
It is February and the RPI ratings in college basketball are now beginning to mean something about whether your team makes the NCAA tournament or not. Duke is the only ACC team in top 20 and they are fifth in the RPI. Wake is 23, followed by Georgia Tech at 25. Clemsom is 37,Maryland 50, Virginia Tech 70, North carolina 76, Miami 86, Virginia 90, Boston College 93 and rounding out the ACC in RPI ratings N C State at 107.
This is for you ECU fans that claim I don't pay enough attention to the Pirates. They are 207 in the RPI. You Carolina fans that think the Tar heels have it tough. UCLA the winningest team as far as NCAA titles are 10-11 this year and are 126 in the RPI.

Stretch Run In Basketball
There are two weeks to go in the regular season of high school basketball. I watched most of the replay of the Gryphon-Knight's game on WHIG-TV Sunday night. Any time that I have been to a game and seen it, whenever I watch the replay I like watching off the ball at who is doing what. Rocky Mount is a really good basketball team.
The weather may be the biggest obstacle that the Gryphons face this week. They have momentum and are playing really well and can't afford to get out is sync by not playing for several days.
Tashawn Mabry has been invited to play in the All Star Classic basketball game which will be played in Myrtle Beach the weekend after the State basketball championships. The All Stars from North Carolina play the All Stars from South Carolina.
Speaking of all Star games, but I have a really hard time getting into the Pro Bowl. I like it being played the week before the Super Bowl and half time with Peyton Manning and Drew Brees talking about their match up in the Super Bowl was the best part.
Carolina lost their third home game in conference Sunday night to Virginia. The last time they were this bad they fired the coach. I feel for you Heels fans as I know you are not as use to being mediocre as State fans have become accustomed to.
I don't care how good of inside game you have if the guards can't get the ball inside the big guys can't score. State and Carolina both have poor point guards and they would be just as bad if each team traded guards.
I know this question is tilted in Carolina's favor a lot, but when was the last time Carolina and State neither one made the NCAA tournament. I don't think it has happened since the NCAA went away from just one team going to the NCAA tournament. I'm trying to use the old noggin here but maybe 1973?
Be safe if you have to get on the highways Monday Morning!
