NBA Lockout- Does Anybody Care?

If an agreement by the NBA and the Players Association is not reached by midnight tonight the NBA plans on locking out the players just as the NFL did four months ago.  Every side has a version of the story and the NBA owners are claiming that 22 of the 30 teams are losing money.  If that is true don't look for an NBA season next year.

If I am in business and can save money by not opening the front door then I am going to stay closed.  The Players are not going  to give in easily and I could see no basketball before Christmas.  The NFL on the other hand there is money being made.  It is just how much of the pie do I get.

Got my bill for the upcoming NFL season from Direct TV yesterday.  Last year I paid $180.00 to be able to look at every NFL game.  It was great but this year is is up to $300 and guess what.  I cancel!  No NFL Sunday Ticket for me this year.

Post 58 has been off since Sunday night  waiting for the playoffs which start at home Sunday night.  They have tried to find a Legion team that wanted to scrimmage but thus far no luck.  Two years ago when Pitt County hosted the State Tournament only one other team from the East made the Tournament because the host team is one of the teams playing.  That year it took four rounds and round four was against Cary.

Last year Post 58 steamed rolled through the first three rounds which qualified them for the state tournament.  This year I see CP Post 58 making it to round two where this year that round will be tougher to get by.  Once again this year it only takes three rounds to get to Morehead City but the road there will be a tougher one.  If you recall in 2009 Post 58 had to score three runs in the bottom of the ninth to get by Wilson in game five in round three and then struggled with Cary to make it to Greenville.  I see our playoff hopes this year  more like 2009 than like last year.

Roosters Repeat

The University of South Carolina won their second straight game last night to win the College World Series over Florida.  Ray Tanner the former Wolfpack coach who has been at South Carolina now for 15 years or so has elevated his status on the college coaching ranks to  a stratospheric level.

This make the former ACC member twice  championships in baseball since they left the ACC and the ACC still without a title since the mid 50's.  I think like in NASCAR if you run up front enough you will win one every now and then.

Here we are near the end of June and all of a sudden both the NFL owners and players are serious in their talks to end the near 100 day lockout.  It is down  till if they don't get an agreement soon then what is to become of all the free agents.  Before a team can formulate  their upcoming 2011 team  they need to negotiate with all the free agents and find out where they are all going.  I would bet by 4th of July the NFL is back in Business.

It is after all a dog eat world and everyone goes after what they can get but it is now late and both sides are on the verge of losing big if they don't sign soon.  When both sides lose that's when talks get serious to stop the bleeding.  When one side has an advantage over the other is when all the stalling goes on.  Everybody's pockets are dropping money now so it is going to end soon.

I haven't had the pleasure to visit the new Rocky Mount High School which is looking more and more every day like a high school.  I am hearing the football press box is no where near the size of the one  at the Athletic Complex.  I would hope it would not be.  All the talk of saving dollars the press box at the complex is one of the best high school press boxes in the state especially with the side porches having a covering for  video and the coaches.  Hard to tell the public we need to reduce teachers but it is ok to build the best press box in state to upgrade the one we already have.

All sports being on campus is worth  something.

The Area one East Senior American Legion playoffs schedule is set and Rocky Mount draws New Bern in the opening round starting Sunday.  We  are in the same bracket with Edenton/Wayne County winner which would be a second round matchup should Post 58 take care of New Bern.  The third round would be Pitt Co/Wilson bracket winner.

The winner of the East area automatically qualifies for the State Tournament in Morehead City which starts July 21st.  The East winner is matched up with the Area one West champion in the fourth round but both will have already qualified for State Tournament.

Mid Summer Jumble

South Carolina and Florida began the two out of three to figure out who is the champion of College Baseball and pitching dominates the first game.  South Carolina wins in extra innings 2-1.  Isn't it funny but you have South Carolina who has now set a record winning 15 straight College World Series games is playing with loads of confidence now that they have won the title last year.

Kind of reminds me of Duke trying to win the basketball title for so long and never quite making it and then in 91' winning their first.  It is kind of like figuring out what it takes and once you reach that point it is easier the next time.

Finally some good news for North Carolina football.  Quinton Coples the player who had his picture slattered all over the country attending a NFL draft party in Washington DC back in April has given the NCAA proof that he paid for everything in order to attend the party and has been cleared of any possible violations of NCAA rules and is eligible to play for the Tar Heels this fall.
The Rocky Mount Telegram is starting in their Tuesday Sports section the players of the year in the spring high school sports scene.  Today girls track and by July 4th it will finish with baseball.  I wonder who will win that?

Under the category of did you see this!  Bart de Zwart rode 300 miles on a stand up paddle board from the Big Island in Hawaii to the Island of Kamai.  That is actually being out to sea standing up on a paddle board.  It took five days.  My question is WHY do such a thing?  I believe he could have picked something easier for his fiften minutes of fame.

All of the local Little league All Star teams, Babe Ruth, Junior legion  and Senior Legion teams are all preparing to start the playoffs for most after 4th of July.  Senior Legion begins Sunday night at Nash Central High School.

The New Woody Is All Heels

I have never met Jones Angell but have heard him many times either as the host of the Tar Heel Sports Network or if you listen to any games of Carolina Baseball you have heard him many times there.  I think from what I have heard from him and my reaction to his voice on the radio they have made a good pick and have kept it in the Tar Heel House so to speak.

Angell 32 has work with the Tar Heel Network for tens years so he is through and through Tar Heel Blue.  Yes all you Tar Heel fans he  will never replace Woody until the Tar heels pull a game out and it is his call that you will remember for ever.

It was that way when Wally Ausley left the Wolfpack because  I still get chill bumps when a hear a replay of "The glass slipper fits, the Wolfpack are the National Champions. Gary Hahn will never be a Wally Ausley and Jones Angell will never be Woody. You know if Angell stays as the voice of the Tar Heels for forty years like Woody Durham did there will not be many people living then that will remember Woody. Forty years will be 2051.

Speaking of the Glass slipper.  The player who made the dunk to win the NCAA basketball title for the Wolfpack  in 1983 Lorenzo Charles was kill in a bus wreck in Raleigh on Monday.  It is just a reminder how fleeting fame can be.

Heard Russell Wilson on the radio today talking about his decision to play his final year of football at University of Wisconsin.  He said during the interview that he knew in order to become better at any thing whether it was baseball or football he had to dedicate time to one or the other.  I think that is what Tom O'Brien has been telling him for two years.

O'Brien face with a quarterback in Mike Glennon who has been the faithful corporate worker for three years did all the practicing while Wilson  played baseball the last two seasons.  If O'Brien could not promise Glennon playing time this year after being the spring quarterback for the past three, Glennon was going to transfer to play football for two years some where next year .If that happen the WolfPack did not have a quarterback with any experience lined up in 2012 after Wilson departed in 2011.  That was unacceptable to O'Brien and he has talked that way for the last two years.

You know this would never have happened if Wilson had of stuck with football until his career was over.

Legion Regular Season Is Over

Coleman Pitt Post 58 from Rocky Mount won the out right #1 seed in the Northern Conference of Area One Eastern Division last Wednesday and since then have played three games that  had no purpose in improving their playoff position. They have the home field advantage during the first few rounds of the playoff.

Tonight CP58 finishes off by sweeping  through the Northern Conference undefeated as  58 takes down Wilson Post 13 for the third time this season and cap off a 9-0  Northern Conference campaign.  They win in Wilson .  The victory give Post 58 a 15-5 record after they started 2-3.  I am not sure how much advantage this team has in home field as they finish 9-1 on the year on the road while managing just a 6-4 home season.

CP58 scored once in the first on a Jordan Taylor rbi.  The third CP 58 brought home five runs  on a single driving home two by Jeremy Sloop.  Kyle Pratt and Khalil Macklin also knocked in a run a piece. Matt Berry got an rbi in the 6th to extend Post 58 lead 7-4.  The eighth was the clincher as Khalil Macklin had a bases loaded triple  for three ribbies and Macklin scored the 4th run of the inning on a wild pitch.

Cam Webb started on the mound and got help in the third from Dillon Moore who slammed the door on Post 13 keeping them at bay until 58 could get breathing room. Finally giving up two runs  in the eighth inning Moore gave way to Matthew Berry who shuts the door  on Post 13.

Matt Berry put a topper on his five hit night lacing a double  in the ninth that drove in two more and Post 58 had score 13 for the night.  Three games this season against Post 13 CP58 has scored12-13 and 17 runs.  Final from Wilson Post 58- 13  Post 13- 6

Berry finished of  the bottom of the ninth by giving up single and then retiring three straight.Matthew had five hits and four rbi.  Three other players had two hits Jordan Taylor with a rbi, Khalil Macklin  with four and Jeremy Sloop with two rbi.  Spiers Miller had a single, and Kyle Pratt had one of the 13 hits Post 58 managed.  The trio of Cam Webb, Dillon Moore and Matt Berry held Post 13 to 6 runs on 8 hits.  Post 58 did commit three errors which factored into the six runs allowed.

Playoffs start next Sunday night July 3rd at Nash Central High School and we think Post 58 starts out their first two out of three series with New Bern.  The Southern Conference does not finish up their regular season until Monday night.

Coaches Are Very Special People

You find them in pee wee ball right on up to high school, or college and even in the Pros. Coaches are the people who get credit when their teams win and what a bum we got as coach when they lose.  Coaching goes way beyond winning and losing.

Most kids that play sports as they go through high school are with their teams and coaches maybe  more than their families. Coaches are teachers first of the the sport they are involved in but the most important job of a coach is to make that player a better human being.  That is part of coaching that is over looked  because of the value put on winning and losing.

During my travels from location to location doing ball games either on radio or TV or just as a fan I have just about run across every coach in the area at one time or another.  I have opinions about everyone of them as I watch them coach and how they deal with their players.

You may have seen in the Telegram Saturday that Joe Morrow had resigned at Faith Christian School as baseball coach after 15 years.  Joe has a regular job where he makes his living but after work you could find him either in the gym coaching basketball or baseball at Faith.

It doesn't matter whether you are in a classroom teaching all day or out in the work place coaching takes more than a couple of hours after school.  Those coaches that make big money from their coaching success give the coaching profession a bad name because 95% of all coaches at any level  are there because the thrill of teaching someone to improve is all they ever need from coaching.

I have found through the years that Joe Morrow fit that description that he was thrilled of being a teacher whether it was a baseball game or teaching a youngster the values of life.  He was made for Faith Christian. An honorable man when didn't need big pay  to do what he has done for 15 years.  Faith Christian has a hugh hole to fill with Joe's decision that his family needs more of his time.

I know of no  more noble decision any one can make that first keep God first and second your family.  Everything else in life is well down the list.  Joe's decision to retire  because of family continues the values that I have found in him when ever our paths have crossed.

Faith Christian has lost a valuable asset but all of us have lost a leader that has inspire many lives.  We all know that Joe will not disappear off the face of the map  but I bet he will still be at most any Faith game.  He will no longer be home late from a game that they didn't get back from until late at night or be gone all day on Saturdays to games.

Thank you Joe for all you have given to our youth in developing them at good citizens.  Thank you for being my friend.
