The Enigmatic Stephen Curry

Way back in the days of the infant cable industry while living in Ahoskie on September first 1979 our cable system brought on the the Super Station WTBS and with it the Atlanta Braves.  That year they had a rookie named Dale Murphy that would as time passed be an all star and by the end of the 80's would be the only reason to watch those lowly Braves.  If they were behind 9-5 late in any game you might watch just to see if Murf might hit a home run in his last at bat of the game.

Also during the 80's there was this basketball player from Virginia Tech named Dell Curry who on one weekend on back to back nights beat Carolina and State with his shooting in what was called the North-South Doubleheaders.  Curry would become a staple of the Charlotte Hornets and even today he is part of the TV color.  The name Curry is now a name associated with the state of North Carolina.

His two sons have played college basketball in the Old North State.  One brought the name Davidson back to the front pages of the sports section.  Now Steph Curry is a super star of the super stars of the NBA.  No one in the history of the NBA have seen the type of shooter Curry is.  The three point line is like the foul line and mid court one step in  Is his three point line.

I have a hard time watching NBA basketball with all the pushing and shoving in what they now call basketball.  If they push Curry away from from the foul line he just shoots past the three point line.  If they push him away from the three point line he just flings up a forty footer.  Here is what is amazing from NBA stats.  Curry has the best shooting percentage in the NBA in the paint.

At six two he is unafraid of driving against the big guys.  He is by far the best player in the NBA.  His range is so unbelievable that the only player in the history of basketball  to compare him to is Wilt Chamberlin.  Wilt was so big no one could get to the basket.  Only Bill Russell could play even Steven with Wilt.

The biggest question about Steph Curry is how long can he keep producing this way.  At some point
His aim has to get off from forty feet just a little.  He has done nothing that we know of that tarnishes his name, the NBA or his home state.  I have no rooting interest in the Golden State Warriors other than when they are on I will watch the way I use to watch Dale Murphy, I'll watch Curry just go see him pop a 40 footer.

I find it hard to believe they will win 73 games which would break the all time wins record for one season.   They are now hitting the part of the season where it is a drag after a whole year of three and four games a week on the road.  They face teams every game that give them a supreme effort just to say they beat the Warriors.  Night in and night out during this point of the season it is hard to keep up the pace every night.

There has to be a game down the stretch when he misses a clutch shot.  MJ, Kobe all have had their time as the best player in the NBA.  Right now it is Stephen Curry the best long range shooter in the history of basketball.  He is from my home state.

Down and Out

It always seems that whatever sport the Big East is trying to win a state championship in all roads lead to I-85.  Football season Rocky Mount had to win East Regional in Mebane and Eastern Alamance.  How many times this century has Western Alamance stood in the way.  In 2008 the Gryphons won a baseball title having to beat Rowan County.  Tonight Southern Nash had to travel to Eastern Alamance and Nash Central girls hosted Northern Guilford.

The Lady Bulldogs were the high seed and earned a home game but the Northern Guilford could care less about their seeding.  This game was nip and tuck all the way in fact all the way and some  more as this one goes over time.  Tied 49 at the end of regulation the Lady Bulldogs could muster but two points in overtime and fall in the sectional finals 56-51.

Southern Nash would be the Big East team heading to Eastern Alamance in this third round game  with the knowledge that a victory would send the Firebirds to Fayetteville and the Eastern Regional.  Tonight the Firebirds are never in this game as Eastern Alamance heads to Fayetteville after they take down Southern 76-50.

The Big East Basketball season ends just in time as baseball starts Monday.

Just a follow up to the North Carolina Wesleyan defeat Friday night.  They lost to LaGrange who against the Battling Bishops made 15 of 34 threes and several came down the stretch when they couldn't miss.  This afternoon in the championship game of Conference USA South Convenant  who was the number two seed beat LaGrange in overtime 101-92.  LaGrange  trailed by the exact same score they trailed to the Bishops 54-39 at the half Friday night but it was with 17:35 in the second half.  Some how or other LaGrange managed to tie the game trailing by 11 under five minutes and by seven with a minute left.  They tied it at 81 and forced overtime.  They didn't shoot threes worth a flip making only 6 of 25.  Only if they had of done that last night.

Tale Of Two Halves

Tonight in the semi finals of the USA South Basketball Tournament in Everett Gym on the campus of North Carolina Wesleyan College the state of Georgia brought two teams  to Carolina  and took on two teams from the Tar Heel State and when the Gym lights dimmed Saturday the two teams from Georgia will play for the title.

The opening game Covenant took care of Greensboro College 91-84 and in the nightcap LaGrange over comes a 15 point halftime disadvantage and destroys the Battling Bishops dream of a regular season and tournament championships and an invitation to the D3 Big  Dance.

The Panthers came out of the box exploding three point baskets making six the first five minutes of the game and led by ten points.  Then the Battling Bishops picked up the the defense and for most of the remainder of the half the Bishops out rebounded, out ran and out shot the Panthers to lead at the half by 54-39 .

The Bishops had 11 fast break points in the first half but the Panther decided their only chance was a walk it up the court half court game and by doing that the Bishops offense stalled and had only 2 points off fast breaks in the second  half.

The Panthers tied the game at  71 all and at that point number 24 Drew Vanderbrook decided it was time to make five straight threes and during the last ten minutes the Bishops  never got a flow to cut the lead that reached 12 down the stretch.  The Bishops forced  to foul the Panthers were near perfect at the foul line.  Final LaGrange 99 Battling Bishops 87.

Justyn Olsen led the Panthers with 26 and three teammates had 19 each, Mark Wagner,Braxton Ford and Drew Vanderbrook.  The Bishops had five to hit double figures led by Adrian Moore 19, Isaiah Alston 18, Brandon Brown 14, D J Weaver 13 and Marcus Williams 12.

The question now for the 20-7 Bishops is there any way to Make  the NCAA D 3 Playoffs by not winning the automatic USA South Bid?Talking with Rikki Rich Sports Information Director at Wesleyan The so called D 3 Power ratings had LaGrange as the fourth seed in the South Region  and NCW 5th.

Here is what the Bishops don't need is for every other conference tournament being played to have upset winners and a low seeded team win their conference tournament and push ahead of the Bishops.  The biggest thing of all that the Bishops  don't need is for Covenant to beat LaGrange Saturday and win the USA South automatic big and LaGrange still ahead of the Bishops getting an invite.  Sure won't be three teams from the USA South in the Tournament.

On To The Semi's

The USA South Men's Basketball started today on the campus of North Carolina Wesleyan College.  The Top seed played the fourth game of the day the Battling  Bishops were suppose to play the 7pm game but the three preceding games managed to push the top seed Bishops to well after eight before they took the court.

The Battling Bishops did not disappoint the home folks.  The eighth seed Averitt Cougars gave the Bishops all they could handle up to the 14 minute mark in the second half.  Tied 40-40 the Bishops led by Sophomore Adrian Moore from Plymouth and former Gryphon Isaiah Alston the Bishops scored 21 straight points in about three minutes to open up a wide gap only to see Averitt chop the lead to eight before the final Bishop Push produced an 81-66 Bishop victory.

Since  Moore has be inserted into the starting lineup the Bishops have run off 11 wins in a row and need two more wins this weekend to get an invitation to the NCAA D 3 basketball playoffs.  Moore finished the night with 30 and Alston 20.  D J Weaver added 12 points and Brandon Brown aided with 11 rebounds.

The Bishops will face in the 7pm semi final action at Everett Gym LaGrange the four seed and a 77-73 win over Ferrum.  The 5pm game will have the 2/3 seeds facing off as  the three seed Greensboro had to get a tip in with 2.8 seconds to play to beat the 6th seed Piedmont 77-75. The 2/7 game featured 52 fouls and took three hours to complete as Convenant downed Wiliam a Peace 87-80.

The 5pm game Friday afternoon has Covenant and Greensboro and the night cap will have the Battling  Bishops and LaGrange.

The Firebirds of Southetn  Nash Have  advanced to the finals of the sectional and are one win from reaching the regionals next week in Fayetteville after a  59-44 victory over Eastern Wayne.  Saturday the Firebirds travel to Eastern Alamance to meet the top seed in the east.

The other Big East top seed Nash Central has advanced after a 77-58 win over Triton.  That was a high scoring game. Could the bracket be falling the Lady Bulldog way.  They get a home game Saturday after Northern Guilford upset Chapel Hill who was the higher seeded team and if Chapel Hill had of won would have hosted the Lady Bulldogs but now Northern Guilford 12 seed comes to Rocky Mount to face the Bulldogs.

The news was not so good for both Rocky Mount and Northern Nash.  Neither was favored in their road games.  Rockingham County beat Rocky Mount 50-43 while the once beaten Terry Sanford Buldogs beat Northern Nash 59-40.

John Thompson USA South Coach Of The Year.

The conference USA South basketball tournament starts Thursday at NC Wesleyan and every conference announces their all conference teams and the top team in the league coach John Thompson has been named the coach of the year.  The Battling Bishops  were 12-2 this season which ties for  the most conference wins the Battling Bishops have ever had tying the 1987/88 team.

Brandon Brown the Bishops forward from Fayetteville and Adrian Moore sophomore from Plymouth have made the all conference team.  D J Weaver the senior From Newport News Virginia has made the second team.  The senior center from Winston Salem Shannon Huff has made the Conference USA South All Sportsmanship team.

Thursday afternoon at 1pm the conference basketball tournament will get under way in Everett Gym on the Campus of NC Wesleyan.  1pm the sixth seed Piedmont will play third seed Greensboro. The second game at 3pm will be the seven seed William Peace going up against the second seed Covenant.  There will be no stoppage between afternoon and evening session and the 5pm game has the five seed Ferrum facing four seed LaGrange.  The final game of the night the host and top seed the Battling Bishops meet up with the last team in the tournament eight seed Averett who's two games this year with the Bishops were overtime and three point difference.

Still have four Nash County high schools playing basketball three girls and a single boys team.  Southern Nash  16-8 just may have caught a major break as they take on Eastern Wayne in the second round who sports a record of 7-20.  The game is at Southern starting at 7.

Marquise Wright leads the way for the Firebirds scoring at a 16.6 and 11.4 rebounds.  Damien Bryant  is second in scoring at 10.9. The Firebirds are averaging 57 points a game and the Firebirds need to score closer to that figure over the 37 they struggled to get in the opening round.

Nash Central 21-4 the top Big East girls team alive is at home in the second round when they host
Triton 18-7.  Robbi Allen 15.8 and Michaela Nelms lead the way for the Lady Bulldogs while Hayden Worney 14 points and Je'nae Harvey carry the load for the Hawks.  The Bulldogs score at 52 a game while Triton gets 55 per game.

You know if Rocky Mount Had not won the Big East Tournament then Northern Nash 20-5 would have been at least 14 seed and would avoid Terry Sanford 25-1at least to the sectional finals.   The Knights are better than their 16 seed so the Bulldogs of Terry Sanford had better be prepared for a fight from the Lady Knights.

TS  is led by Ona Udoh averaging 14 per game. No other player  hits double digits which would tell me a team averaging 52 per game have a complete team with a lot of supporting players..  The Lady Knights leading scorer is Jahlia Williams at 11 and Kayla Tucker 10.8.  The Knights don't have a go to player either so this will be a battle of Titans.  This should be a regional matchup instead of a second round game.

The red hot Rocky Mount 16-8 Lady Gryphons are hitting the road and will be traveling to Rockingham County 24-4.  The Gryphons score at 49 per game while Rockingham 58.  They have three players hitting double digits.  Madeline Hardy 15.3, Macy Boler 13.6 and Gabrielle Gordon 11.9 will be a trio hard to deal with.

Keyanna Spivey 15.8 and Michelle Gainey 10.9 will need to hit their averages  and get plenty of support for the Lady Gryphons to pull off any upset in this game.

Playoffs Underway

The Lady Gryphons of Rocky Mount were the first Big East team to take the court because Both Rocky Mount teams were playing a double header.  Most all single games in the playoffs start at seven except  for those schools fortunate to have both boys and girls playing home games which would mean both are high seeds.

The Lady Gryphons jumped all over the visitors from Lee County with defense and timely baskets and have advanced to the second round of the girls 3-A tonight in Rocky Mount winning 54-31.  They will travel to Rockingham  County a 70-57 victory over Morehead.

Talking about playing defense the  Lady Knights of Northern Nash gave up less points that what the LadyGryphons did.  Northern beat Swansboro 45-28 and advance to round two where they will face the top seed Terry Sanford who was a 79-42 win over Southern Wayne.

In a game much too close for a top seeded team the Lady  Bulldogs of Nash Central survive the visitors from West Brunswick winning 55-52.

The top boys team in the Big East Southern Nash hosted Western Alamance and the favored Firebirds had a struggle on their hands as neither team could muster enough offense to pull away from the other.  In the end the Big East  top seed advances Southern Nash 37-35.

The Knights of Northern Nash had their hands full on the road at Jacksonville.  Midway the fourth quarter the Knights lead 50-48 and upset is on everyone's mind.  The final couple of minutes Jacksonville pulls all the rights strings and beat the Knights 71-59.

The highest seeded team with the worse record Rocky Mount hosted Cedar Ridge and CR jumped on top of the Gryphons  from the opening tap and the Gryphons had to crawl back the entire game.  They got to the mountain top but could never tie or take the lead.  A run and gun games goes to Cedar Ridge 81-77.

The Bulldogs  of Nash Central have have two weeks that their season went from on the verge of a regular season title to a tie for the top spot and losers of any tie breaker.  Tonight their season ends in Lee County losing 69-50.

The Fike Golden  Demons traveled to Asheboro and the Golden Demons season is over after a 69-48 loss.

The only Big East girls team on the road got punished by Northern Guilford losing 71-42

Hunt on the road to Southern Durham  had no luck what so ever as Southern  Durham dispatches the Warriors 77-53.

Three girls team were home and all three advanced.  Nash Central, Northern Nash and Rocky Mount.  Two boys teams played at home and Southern Nash advances.  Rocky Mount's season is over.  Fike girls the only girls team on the road lost.  All four boys teams on the road all four lose.  Fike, Hunt, Nash Central and Northern Nash

The Pursuit Begins Tuesday Night

Six guys teams from the Big East and four gals teams hit the court Tuesday  in the first round of the state  3A basketball playoffs.  Only one school Rocky Mount have both of their teams at home and the Gryphon Girls begin play at 6pm against Lee County.  They will be followed by the Gryphon boys hosting Cedar Ridge.

The other Big East teams will all begin play at 7pm and for the Northern Nash girls they are home to Swansboro.  Nash Central girls host West Brunswick.  The last of the four Big East teams Fike will be traveling to Northern Guilford.  Southern Nash boys as Big Champs are home with guest from Western Alamance.  All four remaining Big East boys  teams are on the road.  Northern Nash visiting Jacksonville, Nash Central pounding the pavement to Southern Lee.  Both Wilson County schools Fike at Asheboro and Hunt at Southern Durham.

This Thursday the Conference USA South men's tournament will start in Everett Gym at North Carolina Wesleyan.  The games will be at 1-3-5 and 7 and the 7 pm game will feature the conference champions  Battling Bishops.  The women's tournament will also start Thursday but it will be without  the Lady Battling Bishops who found themselves in a three way tie for the last spot in the tournament  and they lose out on a bid finishing 9th.  The girls tournament is being played at Maryville.

Ever since the Carolina Duke game there has been tons of Carolina fans pressure on Roy Williams for not calling a time out and not getting much of a shot off  to try to win the game.  There are all types of coaches and I think Roy falls under the run and gun type.  Let's go as fast as possible and get off as many shots as possible.  The more shots the more chances for points.  Mike Gainey falls under this category in my opinion.  It has worked pretty good for both as Roy Williams has two national
championships and Mike Gainey has two state 3-A titles.

The next type of coach is the one that loves to run down the time clock and keep the game in the 50's and that kind of coach is coach Bennett at Virginia.  Most coaches regardless of their style because they like one way they have a hard time changing to conform to the talent they have.

There is of course one coach who because of injuries changed his entire plan mid season twice and the changes led his team to National titles.  We are of course talking about coach K winning the title in 2010 and 2015.  There are not that many coaches who know Several ways to win.  One of the biggest issues in college coaching is recruiting players that fit your coaching style.  Roy has run and gun players when forced to play half court by the other team play soft.  K beat Roy because K kept the game to where Carolina played soft when they should have been pounding the ball inside.  Teams play about 35 games a year one loss is not dropping any team out of the playoffs so people need not get suicidal over one game.  At least not until the playoffs and one loss sends you home.

Ten Of Twelve Big East Teams Begin Journey

All six Big East boys Basketball team are in the playoffs and the Four girls teams that hit 15 wins are all in.  There is one reason why there is no big winners in the boys and that is they are all average in size.  There is not a dominant team among them.  That being said getting any team this week into the Regional will be difficult for the Big East.  On the girls side they have a much better chance to get a team to Fayetteville but for any team it is never easy.

Northern Nash 19-5 Girls seeded 16th.  Sneaks in for a home game opening night.  They will have the 17th seed in house Swansboro 18-8 overall.  Swansboro is led by Miranda Glover scoring 13.6 and Jessica Edwards pulls down nine rebounds.  This is a sectional final quality opening game.

Seven Nash County teams are in three girls and four boys and the Girls Nash Central 20-4 hosting West Brunswick 9-14 should be the only game of the seven that a local team will be the the favorite.
The Lady Bulldogs are seeded 4th and the Trogans 29th.  A must win for the Bulldogs.

Rocky Mount 15-8 a state 14 seed host Lee Co 18-7 seeded 19th.  Aren't home games suppose to be easy in the first round.  Both Northern and Rocky Mount have their work cut out.  Lee County is lead by Shantel Bennett scoring 17.5 and Amoria Neal-Tysor 14.9.

The fourth member of the Big East girls Fike  is the only girls team on the road.  They are a 21 seed and they visit Northern Guilford a 12 seed.

If it was a tough draw for the girls let See what the guys have to face.

Rocky Mount 7-15  winners of seven of their nine  are a 16 seed will host Cedar Ridge 17-9.  They are lead but Peyton Pappas 23.6 and Jacob  Thomas 17.1 both are seniors.  Despite their
record Rocky Mount is playing as good as any Big East team but they have their hands full.

Northern Nash 13-11 travels to Jacksonville 22-5.  Of all the hard games that the Big  East has Northern  gets the toughest.  The Cardinals are led by Bobby  Grubbs and Tavien Cooley between they they score 29 per night.

Nash Central 12-12 right now the most  struggling team of the lot get no mercy from the seedings either facing Southern Lee 19-7.  The Bulldogs  have fallen to a 21 seed will be at Southern Lee a 12 seed.

Southern Nash the Big East top team 15-8 host Western Alamance 11-13.  Yes there is one game the Big East boys will be favored .  The Firebirds have the highest seed 8th  and a home game against a team with a losing record and in these playoffs the Big East doesn't get many of those.

Busy Day In High School Sports

THe boys Big East Conference basketball championship was contested between two team tie for first in the Firebirds and Gryphons and a sluggish first quarter saw the Gryphons lead. 10-8. The second quarter the pace was better and by halftime the Gryphons led by one at 23-22.  The Firebirds got rolling in the third and Rocky Mount  found scoring to be a challenge and the Firebirds led 41-33 after three.

Rocky Mount challenged in the fourth but when the clock hit 00 Southern Nash  prevailed 56-50.  To say it has been a  few years since Southern Nash has celebrated as a champion most of the students at Southern Nash  weren't even born 1998.   Southern awaits the high school seedings and who will be coming to Firebird gym in the first round of the playoffs.

There are many that will ask the question why do they still have high school tournament basketball.  The answer is of course is the conference makes money and  the best reason is every team gets a second chance.  Tonight in Wilson's Fike  high school the fourth seeded team the Rocky Mount Lady Gryphons have completed a sweep knocking off the top two teams Nash Central Wednesday and tonight Northern Nash 45-34.  The victory jets the Lady Gryphons to second seed when the basketball seeding for the state tournament come out tomorrow which will guarantee the Lady Gryphons at least one home game.

Nash Central the conference regular season champs still claims first by rule and Northern Nash will fall to a third seed.  More than likely a road game for the Lady Knights instead of a home game if they had of held on to the second seed.  Fike who was third during the regular season falls to fourth.  The Gryphon victory insures the Big East will send four teams to the state playoffs with at least 15 victories.

Results from last week's East regional wrestling Rocky Mount High sent four wrestlers to the state finals which started Thursday night.  Southern Nash qualified one wrestler and all five started with one match Thursday night.

The Gryphons four wrestlers were Wilson Smith the two time state champion wrestling at 126.  Rashawn Lawrence competing at 106.  Alex Henderson on the mat at 160 and Sedrak Sheppard 170.  Southern Nash has Kendrick Watson competing in the heavy weight division at 285.

The top four wrestlers from each weight class make up 16 who wrestle four matches as long as they win.  A loss and you fall to the consolation.  In other words if you lose your first match then you fall to consolation and if you don't lose in you next three matches you can finish 9th.  If you lose your second match then you are trying for fifth, your third match you are fighting for 3rd and of course if you are undefeated after 3 matches you are going after a state championship in you weight class.

Alex Henderson lost his match Thursday night 10-2 and lost by pin today to be eliminated. Sedrak Sheppard won  on Thursday 13-6.  He lost his quarter final match 13-6 and fighting for 5th lost in the consolation round by pin.   Rashun Lawrence lost his Thursday match 11-0 but wrestled twice today and won 9-2 and 5-1. Kendrick Watson lost in overtime Thursday 4-2 and wrestling twice today still has a shot at 9th winning by two pins.  Both Lawrence and Watson have one match on Saturday morning.

Now for the results for the two time defending state champ Wilson Smith.  He won his match Thursday night 15-0. His quarter final match he won by pin.  The semi finals he won 3-1.  He has one more match to win to be a three time state champion.

Gryphon Run Continues

The unlikely run of a team that has almost twice the losses than wins on the season the Rocky Mount Gryphons continued tonight in Wilson in the semi finals of the Big East tournament when they met their arch rival Northern Nash.

Northern rejuvenated after breaking their eight game conference losing streak Tuesday night in the opening round of the Big East tournament knocking off Nash Central one of the three teams tied for first.  It is just as possible for the team that finished last in the league to run the table in the Big East Tournament as the team with all the losses.

So two teams with so much to gain played the first game of the night and Rocky Mount had a steady lead throughout the first three quarters leading most of the time around eight points.  Northern made a last stand push down the stretch cutting the lead to one under a minute to go.  The Gryphons made enough free throws to hold off Northern 55-53.

Northern now waits to see where they will be seeded but more than likely they will open the playoffs next week at a conference champion.  Rocky Mount winning only their 7th game all year can still win the Big East number one spot Friday night. They already know by winning tonight they can be seeded as at least the number two from Big East which should provide a home game next week.

Three teams tied for first and Southern Nash won the draw to be seeded in the one  spot for the tournament.  In order to get the conference top seed in next week's state tournament Southern sat out until the second game tonight and they face the host team Fike.

The game went much the way the first  game of the night did as The Firebirds started slow but during the second and third quarters had a comfortable cushion.  The Golden Demons did not go quietly into the night and Made a run in the fourth.  Much like the first game Southern Nash survives and will pay for title 51-46.

Rocky Mount lost twice to Southern Nash by 16 during the Christmas Tournament and lost by 16 in the first cycle visit to Southern.  Just 10 days again Rocky Mount won by 8 at Gryphonland.  What's on the Line Friday night the top seed in next week's. state tournament.

The girls game starts at 6pm when Northern Nash and Rocky Mount play for the title. It doesn't
Happen often but four teams from Nash County will travel to Wilson County  to decide Big East tournament titles.

Last night's victory by NC Wesleyan over Averett gave the Battling Bishops the regular season title and the number one seed in the USA South tournament next week.  Whether it's the girls or boys the regular season champs host the Tournament. Starting next Thursday the top eight teams will report to Rocky Mount where starting at 1pm Thursday afternoon the 3/6 seed teams will clash.  The 3 PM game will feature the 2-7 teams.  The five o'Clock game will be the 4/5 teams.

The host Battling Bishops will play the number eight seed in the nightcap at seven PM.  Every team in the league has one game left this Saturday and the only team that know whether they are as far as seeding is the top team North Carolina Wesleyan.  Two through eight will not be known until the end of play Saturday.

Big East Upset

Every sport that has a bye there is always the question is it good to have extra time to rest or are you better off playing getting into some momentum?  Tonight in Wilson Rocky Mount Girls 13-8 the fourth seed in the Big East coming off a very explosive offensive night last night against Hunt continue as hot tonight jumping out to a double digit lead before the top girls Nash Central 20-3 knew what hit them.

Down 23-9 at the end of one the Lady Bulldogs play a much better second quarter but still found themselves down 38-26 at the half. They got closer in the third trimming the Lady Gryphon lead to 47-39.  This season when Rocky Mount scores they have been hard to beat.  Those games when they have lost  they struggled on offense.  Not tonight as Rocky Mount will play for the Big East girls tournament title Friday night at 6pm after a 66-54 win over the top seed Nash Central.

The second game of the night the host team Fike taking on the number two team in the Big East Northern Nash.  Fike at home jumped to a 13-9 lead at the end of the first quarter.  If there is one thing you need to be prepared for any time you play a Grover Battle  team is you have to be up for the pounding that Northern applies when they play.  If you are not a physical team the constant forcing the ball inside when Northern on offense and when you have it they try to keep you away from the basket.

The second quarter Northern  was beginning to show their physicality and it wore on Fike.  Northern lead surged to a 24-18 half lead and then a third quarter blitz out scoring Fike 22-9 to lead at the end of three by 46-27.  Now in control all Northern had to do is run the clock out as they scored 11 to Fike's 10 to win 57-37.

What's new in Big  East girls basketball?  Northern and Rocky Mount play for the Tournament title Firday night at 6pm.  Already this season they have met three times with Northern winning both conference games and the Lady Gryphons winning in the Christmas Tournament.

Tonight NC Wesleyan traveled to Danville Virginia to meet Averett who lost in Rocky Mount in overtime to the Bishops with only one thing on their mind.  A victory and they would win the regular season USA South and would the host the conference tournament starting Thursday February 25th-27th.

The winner gets the automatic conference bid to the NCAA D III tournament.  The Battling  Bishops with a mission to win jumped all over Averett from the get go and their biggest lead in the first half was 27-13.  They led 46-38 at the half. The lead swelled to 55-40 just under 16 minutes to go and for the next 15 minutes the lead bobbled between 11-14 points.

Adrian Moore from Plymouth was solid all night long hitting threes and driving to the basket.  He scored 25 and fouled out with 1:15 to play with the Bishops ahead 81-70.  Then it started Averett  made three threes from the grand stands.  A couple of missed free throws and with 2.8 seconds to go is 83-82 Bishops.  D J Weaver sinks two freebies and a mid court shot hits the rim and The Battling Bishops win the USA South Regular season winning at Averett 85-82.

DJ Weaver hits for 21 points, Brandon Brown 12, Devontae Williams 10 and giving vital minutes off the bench Isaiah Alston gets 9.  The Bishops finish up their regular season Saturday at Methodist. Regardless of the outcome the Bishops will host the USASouth tournament on Feb 25th starting at 1pm when  the 3/6 seeds will open the tournament.

There is no doubt it is hard winning any tournament on somebody else's court so the Bishops have the inside track having the tournament on their home court.

Basketball Buffett

You had a chance Tueday night to indulge in high school basketball as the opening day of the Big East Basketball Tournament got under way at Fike High in Wilson.  The opening game of the day at 4pm featured the fourth seed Rocky Mount Girls 12-8 going up against the fifth seed Hunt 4-19.

On line projections already say Rocky Mount will play in the state tournament next week but heading into today about the only way Hunt makes it is win the tournament.  There was never any doubt about this one as Rocky Mount cruises to the semi's where they will meet the top seed Nash Central at 6pm Wednesday after they rollover over Hunt 69-38.  More than likely the basketball season is over for Hunt who now has a record of 4-20.

Just last Tuesday Nash Central had a one game lead and all they needed to do was win just one game to capture the Big East boys regular season.  Both their games were on the road  so the task was not easy.  Losing both the Bulldogs fell into a three way tie and to make the week even worse they lost the seedings  drawing and drew third putting them into action Tuesday instead of getting a bye until Thursday.

Now a number three seed and 12-11 the Bulldogs took on the Knights of Northern Nash 12-10 the sixth seed and working on a eight game conference losing streak.  What better way to get back lost momentum right.  Not so fast my friend, Northern Nash has advanced to the Thursday boys semi finals after they take down Nash Central 64-51.  Northern will now meet Rocky Mount Thursday night at 6pm in the first boys semi final.

The third game of the night focused on girls basketball featuring the host Fike Golden Demons 18-6  who drew the sixth seed the Southern Nash Lady Birds 0-21.  Don't think anyone thought this would be a game and it wasn't 74-39  as Southern Nash finishes their second consecutive winless season and a streak now standing at 46.

Hard to believe that Feb 17th 2014 Southern Nash girls the fifth seed played Nash Central the fourth an overtime game and Lady Bird's Destiny Burgess poured in 38 points.  24 came in the 4th quarter and overtime.  That was the first game in this streak now at 46.  Their last win was Feb 8th 2014 and oddly enough it was their second win in a row.

The final game of the night featured the two teams that went 5-5 during the conference play and they tied as the 4th seed.  Hunt 10-13 and Fike 10-14 records not what anyone in Wilson County expected from either team.

Hunt led from the opening tap but the closer the end of the fourth quarter came Fike played inspired ball on the home court and by the finish beats Hunt 51-47.  Fike heads to a Thursday night  match with Southern Nash the top seed in the Big East tournament Thursday night at 7:30.

Wednesday night is the girls semi final night with the four seed Rocky Mount testing the top seed Nash Central at 6pm and the night cap will be the two seed Northern Nash meeting the home Team Fike at 7:30.

Final Thoughts on Super Bowl

Peyton Manning says he needs time to decide whether he is going to retire after the emotion of the game has subsided.  Here are my thoughts long after the game has ended.

During the Rocky Mount -South Point state championship game I don't know anyone who would have said when it was all over that it was a great game and if the Gryphons had lost we all could say they gave their best effort.  Didn't get any feel at any time the Panthers offense could score when needed.

Effort sometimes is based on what the other team allows you to do.  The Denver D was by far better than the Panthers offense.

Six false starts can be attributed to worry about the rush coming from the Denver front seven.

Seven sacks,  Even when not rushed  Cam felt pressure and he rushed throws.

Four turnovers resulting in 17 points.

Could not have asked the Panther defense to do more they needed help from the offense.

If Peyton Manning doesn't retire he is foolish.  By the third quarter he didn't have enough muster on the ball to complete a pass.  Had several open receivers that the ball was so slow getting there the Panthers knocked the ball down.  Should have intercepted a couple of them.

I thought the Panthers stuck to the play action pass too long.  The way the rush was coming should have been in shotgun ready to throw.

The Broncos got off the bus ready to play.  The Panthers didn't

Cam's habit of throwing off his back foot and not stepping into throws caused him to be 18-41 and the 18 he completed most took great efforts by receivers to catch.

I think Jonathan Stewart got hurt on the opening drive and even though he played was not effective running the ball.  That hurt the Panthers. No other runner was effective either.

I have to ask what is the purpose of replay.  It gives the NFL  the ability to make the right call.  I understand there are many replays you just can't tell so the call on the field stands.  Cotchery's catch was a catch. No if and or buts about it.

Cam's fumble when the score went to 10-0 why was there not a penalty on a hit to the head.  The first contact on the play was a hand to the side of the head.  That has been called all year protecting quarterbacks but not on this play.

If the Cotchery catch stands there is no touchdown by the D and the score is 10-9 Panthers when the Panthers have the ball with three minutes to go.  This is a completely different game.

Poor Clock Management by the Panthers just before the half.

Cam Newton got humbled by the Denver D.  He showed he still has a long way to go to move up in on elite status both on the field and when the game was over.  His two and a half minute post game interview session with a hood covering  much of his face.  Take defeat like a man.  Answer every question until the NFL says interview over.  If you have no problem basking in the glory he needs to take the heat in defeat.

He lost my respect by not going after his own fumble on the drive when the score is 16-10.  He thought about protecting himself instead of doing what had to be done to win the game.

Looks like the only Manning in the stadium that didn't enjoy the win was Eli.  Big Brother has two Super Bowls wins now just like Eli.

Could It Be

Monday starts the Big East basketball tournament and this year with three teams tying at the top neither of the three seem capable of winning a state championship much less winning this week's tournament.  Is it possible the best team in the league is the team with the worst record.  The Rocky Mount Gryphons.

Yes their season has been disrupted by this important item of business called a state championship in football.  Many seasons in the pass basketball games were postponed until the season was over which  effected the girls season who didn't have to wait for the girls on the football team.  Now that basketball season starts the second week in November and this football season didn't end until the second weekend  of December half of the basketball season was already over.

Conference play started and the period of adjustment where the Gryphons had to figure out why these football player need to take my place.  Once the Gryphons reached 0-3  and 0-13 that happy meeting ground was reached.

Since that first victory the Gryphons are 6-1, Nash Central 5-2, Southern Nash 4-3.  They are of course the top three teams.  Fike and Hunt 3-4 and Northern  is 0-7.  Could it be that this 6-14 team  is the best team  in the league.  They have no double digit scorer their leading scorer is Kyle Barnhill scoring at 9.1 points.  They have four others scoring over six.  Enanual Spruill 8.6, Sherrid Greene 7-7, Latrell Daniels 7.6 and Artavious Richardson 6.6.

They are right now the hottest team and playoff sports comes down to the hot one wins.  This afternoon the three way draw was held and Southern Nash gets the top seed.  Joining them sitting out with the bye is Rocky Mount.  Nash Central is the unlucky one and has to play three times to win the conference tournament which will be held at Fike.  School is already out Monday because of President's Day so Big East will play four games Tuesday. To make up ground.

4pm will begin with Rocky Mount Girls 4th seed will play 5th Hunt.  The boys will take the court at 5:30 with the 3 seed Nash Central tangling with Northern Nash.  The 7pm is a girls contest as host Fike girls the 3rd seed meets winless 6th seed  Nash.  The long night ends with a packed gym for Fike and Hunt boys seeded four and five.

The Highschoolot.com 3-a projections show all six boys teams will make the tournament and whoever finishes as the top seed from the Big East will be seeded 8th.

Day Late But A Tie

Starting the week Nash Central boys had a one game lead with two games to go. By  the end of Wednesday night there was a possibility of a four way tie at the top spot.  All the Bulldogs needed to ruin all possible ties was win at Southern Nash.

Southern Nash and Nash Central locked into a championship battle and when regulation time ended no one had the lead.  The Bulldogs 6-4 did all they could to take the title outright but final the Firebirds 6-4 66 the Bulldogs 65.  If it ends in a two way tie Nash Central gets the tie breaker having beaten Southern in the Christmas tournament.

Fike needed  a win and they just might be part of a four way tie.  All they needed to do was beat the defending eastern state champs.  Hunt 4-5 could not only spoil a Fike tie at the top but they would  both be tied .  Hunt gets their wish as they knock Fike out 51-47 and they both stand 5-5.

Now the question is it going to be a three way or two way tie.  The Bulldogs and Firebirds had to wait more than two hours since they started in late after noon and the Knights and Gryphons never got going until around 8pm.

Starting later than the other conferences games Rocky Mount 5-4 knew from the early results they could be part of a three way tie for first or a three way tie for 3rd.  They were in the home of their heated rival Knights of Northern Nash who has lost all confidence during this stretch of the last three weeks.

A victory for the Gryphons would culminate one of the greatest finishes in any Gryphon basketball season considering they started 0-13 and started 0-3 in conference and in almost every game they lost by double digits.  Since that first victory the Gryphons have the best record in the league at 5-1.

If you saw the Gryphons at Christmas and see them now you would have to say. "Who are these guys?"  Tonight at Northern Rocky Mount uses a 12 point halftime lead and staves off a Northern rally to win a share of the Big East regular season and join Nash Central and Southern Nash at the top.  66-54

The girls had very little drama as expected Nash Central routed The Lady  Firebirds but not as bad as some Firebird losses 56-30

Northern Nash had no trouble with Rocky Mount 55-40.

Fike clinched the only question in the girls action beating Hunt 63-39 to take third place.

This afternoon NC W women laid a whipping on Mary Baldwin 99-60.  They play their final home game at 2pm Sunday against Meredith.

On the road the red hot men's team of NC Wesleyan won their 8th game in a row over Ferrum  63-58.  This victory clinch a tie for first as they still have two games to go.  One victory not only clinches the top spot in the conference tournament  but the Battling Bishops would host the USA South basketball tournament Feb 25-27.  Home gym advantage would be a big step in making  the NCAA D III tournament.

Lady Bulldogs' 4x400 State Indoor Champs

Friday the State Indoor Track and Field Championships were held and the Lady Bulldogs of Nash Central 4x 400 Meter Relay team is a state champion today.  The team of T'Keyah Macklin, Caresha Leonard, Anaiya  Harris and Teona Hill  crossed the finish line ahead of the field.

Miya Spivey finished 8th in the girls high jump putting a point on the scoreboard for the Bulldogs.

The 4x800 relay  team finished 7th For the Bulldogs.  This team had members Carisha Leonard, Anaiya Harris, Cassidy Lyle and Teona Hill.

Teona Hill finished 4th in the 300 Meter Dash scoring more Bulldog points.

The Rocky Mount girls teams had two members scoring points in the 55 meter dash.  Finishing  4th Laneeja Sheppard and Teyanna Dessaure 7th.

The Lady  Gryphons finished 3rd in the relay 4x200.  Nyanna Edwards, Jasmine Davis, Brittany Brickford and Laneeja Sheppard

The Northern  Nash  boys Relay team finished 7th scoring 2 points in the 4x200. The team consist of Tyrek Mils, Donovan Whitehead, Elijah Spencer and Mahleke Mills.

Coleman Cherry for the Knights finished 6th in the 1600 meter run.

Southern Nash's lone points came in the1600 meter run when Nadir Thompson  finished 5th scoring 4 points.

Nash Central girls finished 8th with 27 points.  Rocky Mount scored 20 points pulling down 10th spot.  The boys Southern Nash with 4 points were 38th and Northern Nash 5 points tied for 30th.

Big East Basketball will finish it's regular season today as all three games left will be made up. Hunt will travel to Fike with the girls game starting at 1pm.  Nash Central will drive to Southern Nash with the girls action beginning at 4:30.  The last game of the day will be a trip by Rocky Mount to Northern with a 6pm girls start.

The 3-A Regional wrestling championship was delayed from Friday to start Saturday and it will finish on Sunday.  Special permission had to be obtained by the  NCHSAA Board of Durectors to allow action on Sunday.   Most of the eastern state was about the only schools who were out of school because of the snow threat on Friday and the western regional started on Friday.

Thursday in Raleigh was the State 3-A swimming and diving Championship.  The best indivual effort by any local swimmer was the second place finish by Nash Central's Jennifer Jackson who finished second in the 50 yard free style.  She earned 17 points for her Bulldog team.

Rocky Mount girls team wise had the best day of any local team collecting 56 points which was good enough to finish 12th. Rocky Mount got points in the women's 200 Medley Relay when Kayla Miller,Jillian Lavely, Megan Moss and Aimee Dalsimer finished eighth collecting 22 points

Kayla Miller finished 8th in the Women 50 yard free style collecting 11 points. Teammate Jillian Lavely finished 14 earning 3 points.  The Women's 100 freestyle Kayla Miller was there earning points again with a 7th place adding 12 points to the Gryphon Total.

The Gryphon Relay team finished 13th in the Women's 200 yard free style and either it another 8 points.  The team consisted of Aimee Dalsimer, Megan Moss, Jillian Lavely and Kayla Miller

Nash Central girls are the 16th best swim team in the state having a total of 33 points. helping the 17 earned by Jackson was the Bulldog 200 yard Medley  Relay getting a single  point by finishing 26th with the team of  Mia Gibson, Jennifer Jackson, Kaley Sharpe and  Sarah Hicks

The Bulldog Relay team scored 2 points in the 200 yard free style relay with the team of Sarah Hicks,Kaley Sharpe, Mia Gibson and Jennifer Jackson.

Jennifer Jackson had a responsibility in every point earned by the Bulldogs when she finished 7th in the 100 yard Breast  Stroke giving the Bulldogs another 13 points.

The Big East boys only had  two teams with points Fike 83 good for 11th and Hunt 29 points finishing 24th.

Jumbled Mess

Big East boys basketball heads to the final night of the regular season and just about any thing is possible.  Well, maybe not everything.  Even though they can not have a losing season Northern Nash is the sixth seed.  A victory Friday night at home over Rocky Mount can not get them out of the hole.  At 2-7 12-9 the Knights are doomed for last.

Rocky Mount the team that lost  their first 13 games this season have rebounded winning five of six conference games to stand 5-4.  Should they beat Northern it is possible that Rocky Mount could tie for first with Nash Central and Southern Nash.  To complicate the world if Fike 5-4 10-13 knocks off  Hunt there will be a four way tie at 6-4.  All of these what ifs haven't  said one word about Hunt 4-5 9-13 who if  they beat Fike could rise  to 5-5

All this confusion could be erased with one simple  fact if Nash Central 6-3 12-10 goes to Southern Nash 5-4 12-8 and wins.  That would put the Bulldogs at 7-3 and the outright regular season champ
If Southern Loses they would drop to 5-5.  If Northern beats the Gryphons the Gryphons fall to 5-5.

So we have started out with the possibility of a 4-way tie for first if Southern Wins, Rocky Mount wins and Fike wins.  If Nash Central wins the title and Southrrn loses, Rocky Mount loses, and Fike loses and Hunt wins there is a 4-way tie for second.

Confused I think everybody is?  What else could possibly confuse us even more ?  Remember last year weather caused state wide panic when conference tournaments,  district play and even the Regional schedule had to be adjusted because of weather.  You do know what the forecast is calling for about 11am.  Already Wilson County has cancelled school Friday.  No Hunt/ Fike game before Monday and I guess you heard about Monday Right?

Let's talk girls they can't be this complicated.  No Nash Central 8-1 19-3 travel to Southern Nash 0-9 0-20.  The  biggest question in this game is, can Southern score 20 in this game.

Rocky Mount 5-4 12-7 visits Northern Nash7-2 17-4.  Rocky Mount could finish third with a win and Northern has second win or lose.

Fike 5-4 17-6 can still get third but Hunt 2-7 4-16 is stuck in fifth.  Life it can be so simple.

Oh wait, by the time I can even finish this Nash County has cancelled so there is no basketball until at least Monday and we will have to see what Monday  brings.  If is as cold this weekend what falls Friday will still be here Monday and of course we are suppose to have more them.

Hearing that some schools have postponed games until Saturday.  If the temperature is  as low as forecasted Friday night/Saturday morning and if there is anything white falling on Friday where is it going on Saturday regional wrestling is in jeopardy.  A repeat of last year could be in the works.

Gryphons Exact Double Revenge

Just last Friday night Fike came to Rocky Mount and swept the Gryphons on their home court.  The games were suppose to be at Fike but a wet floor caused the games to be switched to Rocky Mount.  Tonight the return trip.  Fike and Rocky Mount boys both still have an outside shot at tying for first.  Somehow or other last Friday Fike thought they were home and tonight Rocky Mount sweeps Fike on Fikes home floor.  The girls win 35-26 while the boys win 48-36.

Friday night all the boys games in Big East basketball has ramifications about who is going to finish first.  Nash Central is 6-3 playing 5-4 Southern Nash.  Fike 5-4 plays arch rival Hunt 4-5 and Rocky Mount 5-4 travels to Northern Nash 2-7.  There is a possibility that a four way tie is possible but in order for that to happen Southern Nash must beat Nash Central.

Fike girls lost their sixth game of the year to the Lady  Gryphons and both are tied in conference at 5-4.  Fike has the edge playing Hunt with only two conference wins while Rocky Mount travels to Northern Nash.

Tonight at North Carolina Wesleyan the men's basketball team finished their home portion of this basketball season and they beat Methodist University 72-59.  They are now 9-2 in conference play and the way the conference rules read the top seed regular season team gets to host the conference tournament.

D J Weaver finished his regular season at home scoring 32 points.  Brandon Brown added 11.  The 9-2 record right now leads the USAS but the Battling Bishops finish on the road with three road games over the next ten days.  All they need to follow is win all three and they will host the tournament Feb 25-27th.  Tall task but the way they are playing it can be done.

The girls lost the first game tonight to Methodist 65-48.

Methodist had two local players coming home as Alexia Hines  a freshman for the Monarchs who played last year for Northern Nash scored four points in the first half but was injured late in the second quarter and never returned to the game.  Tabious Hilliard the senior point guard from Rocky Mount high scored three points.

Boy's Title Up For Grabs

I always try to post by 6am every morning.  When ever there is live action like last night's Big East action I try to go on line as soon as I gather what information I can find.  I have a different excuse for being a little late this morning.

Last night I spent at Rex Hospital as my daughter Amy had her first baby with husband Micah Ward. A 24 hour labor that started Tuesday morning at her home at 4:30 am ended at 4:31 this morning when Matthew John Ward made his first public appearance all eight pounds and twelve ounces.  He is twenty one and a  half inches long.  I have just arrived home from Raleigh and had to gather the info because last night I didn't have ball on my mind.

Told you yesterday that the Nash Central boys road to the Big East championship had a tough one at Hunt. It was as Hunt wins their fourth conference game to go to 4-5 while the Bulldogs drop to 6-3 after a 54-51 Hunt Victory

Tonight Rocky Mount Travels to Fike to make up a weather game from a couple Of weeks back.  This one is at Fike after they switched last Friday night and Fike clipped the Gryphons.  The winner of this game Friday will have a shot  at a three way tie for first.

They got in this position after Rocky Mount beat Southern Nash   52-44.  Rocky Mount's record goes to 4-4 while Southern drops to 5-4.  Fike 4-4  got into this position beating Northern Nash 2-7 60-52 last night . The winner of Fike / RM will be tied for first with Southern Nash and Nash Central if Southern wins that match up Friday night  with Nash Central and the Fike Rocky Mount winners wins their Friday game also.

Nash Central girls can wrapped up first place in the Big East beating after clipping Hunt 59-43.  Nash Centrsl is now 8-1 and finish up the season with winless Southern Nash. Hunt goes to 2-7.

Rocky Mount held on winning at home over the Lady Firbirds 44-12. Rocky Mount is up to 4-4 while the Lady Firebirds lose another one and stank 0-9

The big girls game for the night went  Northern Nash's way as on their home floor the edge Fike 53-51.  Northern goes to 7-2 and must beat Rocky Mount and hope Nash Central loses to Southern.

Tonight is the final home basketball game for NC Wesleyan basketball team. There will be a doubleheader starting at 5:30.  They play Methodest.  Tabious Hilliard the point guard on the Rocky MountnState championship team in 2010 will be here playing for Methodist

The Final Lap

Down the stretch they come and this is shaping up to be a great year for Nash Central basketball both on the male and female side.  Both squads have a game lead with two games to go.  They play Hunt and Southern Nash this week.  It is obvious that the boys have the tougher road to finish first.

Boys :  Nash Central 6-2 12-9 @ Hunt 3-5 8-13:  This is the easiest of the Bulldogs two games this week but it is on the road.  Hunt is dangerous at home and a Bulldog lost makes for a winner take all Friday night with Southern Nash.

Southern Nash 5-3 12-7 @ Rocky Mount 3-4 3-14:  This is a must win game for Southern Nash.  The only way Friday can be for the regular season title in Big East if the Firebirds lose at Rocky Mount is for Nash Central lose at Hunt.  If both Nash Central and Southern lose Both Fike and Rocky Mount still have a shot at some part of first.  They square off Wednesday at Fike so there would be possible
That the Wednesday Fike/ Rocky Mount winner wins Friday and Southern Beats Nash Central Friday there will be a three way tie.

Fike 3-4 9-12 @ Northern Nash 2-6 12-8:  Fike needs three wins this week and anything is possible.  A couple of wins this week to get the Knights primed for the playoffs.  It is conceivable that Northern Nash could have best overall record for the year in the conference and not make the playoffs.

The girls angle:

Nash Central has Hunt and Southern Nash combined 1-13  this week.  There should be no reason to lose either.  Aiding the Bulldogs is Fike and Northern Nash collide Tuesday so one will lose a chance to tie.  The other reason it should be clear sailing for the Lady Bulldogs is they don't play either team that could tie them.

Fike 5-2 17-4 @ Northern Nash 6-2 16-4:  The loser of this one is out of the regular season championship race.  The loser will have lost only five games all season.  The Big East girls are loaded and maybe one or more make the Regionsls.

Nash Central 7-1 18-3 @ Hunt 1-6 3-16:  The  worse thing that could happen to to Nash Central is sleep through this week and mess with their momentum for the playoffs.

Southern Nash 0-8 0-18 @ Rocky Mount 3-4 10-7.  This is last chance for Southern Nash  to win a game this year.  If they go 0 for the week they will be winless for more than two years now.

All Bronco Defense

The Carolina Panthers started the 50th Super Bowl as if  they were the team that had never had any players play in the Super Bowl while the Broncos defense played as if they were the team slighted.  Manning led the Bronc's down the field on their first drive but had to settle for a field goal and Denver had a 3-0 lead right off the bat.

If you ever have thought of how refereeing can change the momentum of any game.  Jericho Cotchery makes a spectacular catch and I never saw on any replay the ball ever touched the ground.  Remember something new for the Super Bowl NFL headquarters were making the reviews and their first one they miss.  Two plays later Cam is sacked on the four and Denver scores.  The ball should have been across the Panther 40 on the catch by Cotchery.  10-0 Denver.

The Panthers fumbled twice  but the second the D held getting a turnover themselves.  They allowed A 61 yard punt return when they thought a fair catch had been called but the defense held to a field goal.  One 73 yard drive was all the offense could muster on a Stewart touchdown.  Poor clock management at the end of the half.  Just maybe the worse half of football all year by the Panthers but only down 13-7.  The Denver offense has done nothing since the opening drive.  The Panthers can't say much either as Cam's passes have been high on every throw.

The third quarter the Panther offense dominates the football but a field goal hitting the cross bar and another drive ends  on a Cam high throw.  The third quarter the Panthers doing everything they can to lose.  Denver gets the only points. 16-7 Denver.

The Carolina D did everything they could to win and yet the Denver D was better all night.  The final straw for the Panthers was Cam's last fumble when he chose to not dive after the ball.  Still with a chance to win if he recovers the game is still not over.  By giving up it was.

Give the Denver D all the credit in this one.  The pressure on Cam all night he threw high on every pass.  The Panthers four turnovers and a missed field goal, six false starts and seven sacks.  The was a stomping and thank goodness the Panthers defense came to play or it would have been worse.  The Panther D held Denver to 1-14 on third downs.  They played their hearts out but Denver D was better 24-10.

The Panthers simply were not the best team.

Euphoria Rules

Tarboro High's Todd Gurley  has won the NFL offensive Rookie of the year.  Gurley who never set foot on an NFL playing field until the third quarter of the third game after recovering from a knee injury while at the University of Georgia rushed for 1106 yards third in the NFL.  He averaged 4.8 yards per carry and scored 10 touchdowns.

There is nothing in life that compares to being the best.  You win the award as the top salesman or best truck driver.  The sports world is nothing more magical than winning a state title, national championship and in the world of professional sports the Stanley Cup or the Super Bowl.

Just December the entire city of Rocky Mount had that feeling of Euphoria as the Rocky Mount Gryphons won the State football title. There is just something about when you have proven you are the best that everyone stands up straighter, smiles more and just has that total satisfaction.  Like 2010 when our area was in economic depression the basketball team gave us time to forget our problems and stick out our chest with winning a title.

We are blessed in this area to be part of Tobacco Road and every time one of our state teams wins a national championship we get those same feelings we had while winning state titles but now it is the best in the United States.

North Carolina has three professional major league sports teams the Hurricanes in Raleigh, the Hornets in Charlotte and the Panthers in Charlotte.  We are little or young state when it comes to professional sports as we have only had the big leagues here in North Carolina since 1988.

Can anyone forget the run made by the Hurricanes in 2006 when every playoff series went down to the wire.  Two months the pressure built as they kept winning series after series until they won the Stanley Cup.  North Carolina went mad for the Hurricanes even though there were many didn't know a thing about hockey or how it was suppose to be played.

Back in 2004 the last real run by the Panthers into serious playoff football the entire state went ballistic when Steve Smith caught the bomb to upset St Louis and shocking Philadelphia to go to the Super Bowl.  The entire state was wild but we were the underdogs and our worry was not to get embarrassed by the big bad Patriots.  Less than two minutes to go there were thoughts throughout the world that those Panthers just might win that Super Bowl.

Tonight our Panthers stand with one hand on the mountain top and all they need to do  is pull themselves rest of the way up and stand on the mountain top.  This trip they are the favorites.  A new role for a state that has only one major trophy the Stanley Cup out of 67 professional season since basketball, football and hockey  came to NC.

If the Panthers play Panther football and don't have turnovers.  They have been basking in the glory for a week now and for teams normally underdogs all those pats on the back could lead to contentment.  Panther D against Bronco's D the edge has to go to Denver.  Offense against offense the Big edge is the Panthers.  Special teams they are a wash.  I see no way that Peyton and company will move the ball consistently against the Panthers and I suspect will put the Denver D in some bad field positions difficulties.

My advise to the Panthers hold on to the ball and you will win.  If that happens the entire Carolinas can declare a national holiday Monday as there will be nobody wanting to do any work on Monday but talk football about those World Champions.    Go Panthers!!!!!!!!!!

All Lady Bulldogs

It is no surprise that the battle for first place in the Big East girls basketball went to the home team tonight the Lady Bulldogs but for most of the game it seemed as it would be a laugher.  The Bulldogs led by ten at the quarter pole, eight at the half and eighteen at the end of the third.  The Lady Knights are a proud program and for more than half of the fourth quarter they had the home folks antsie in their seats as they cut the lead by more than two thirds.  Sometimes what it takes to make up a big deficient runs out of gas and the Lady Bulldogs take hold of sole pocession of the Big East with a 53-45 win over the Lady Knights of Northern Nash. The Knights drop to a tie for second with Fike at 5-2.

Tonight the Lady Gryphons 3-3 hosted Fike and with the regular season ending next Friday  night this was the Gryphons chance to start moving from fourth place.  Including tonight and three games next week three of the next four games are against teams ahead of Rocky Mount.  Fike enters 4-2 and one game out of first but a lost and any possible thought of still finishing in first would be fading.  Tonight Fike hopes of still taking the Big East crown as they come to Rocky Mount and win a shoot out behind a career night from Dajah Horne with 41 as  the Golden Demons win.72-64.  The fate of the Gryphons falls now to protecting fourth next week.

The Hunt Lady Warriors survived the battle with The Lady Birds of Southern Nash for last place in the Big  East as Hunt wins 50-26.  It is the third most points scored by the a Lady  Birds all season.  Their high mark on the season is 30 and once they scored 29.  Despite the offensive output they still lost by 24.

First place was playing last in boys basketball  as the Bulldogs  5-2 hosted Northern Nash 2-5.  Much of the night the Knights looked as if an upset was possible but down the stretch the Nash Central Bulldogs made the plays and they up their conference record to 6-2 after a 60-53 win over Northern Nash.

The Fike boys made it a sweep  for the Golden Demons on a night they expected to be playing at home but a leaking gym floor sent the Golden  Demons north to Rocky Mount.  Fike maintained a five to eight point lead most of the way and when the final buzzer sounded Rocky Mount's three game win streak is over 63-55.  The two teams who were tied at 3-3 now have Fike 4-3 and Rocky Mount 3-4.  They meet again next Wednesday night at Fike.

Southern Nash stayed within striking distance in the Big East race knocking off Hunt  59-51.  The Firebirds are 5-3 while Hunts  drops 3-5.

I know it is hard to believe but Saturday Morning at 11am baseball season begins at North Carolina Wesleyan.  It's early I know but all spring sports will be finished by mid April in Division 3.  Two players from Nash County are on the roster.  Dillon Moore and Garrison Vick.

Meaningful Games Today

The Rocky Mount Fike game scheduled for tonight at Fike has been switched to Rocky Mount due to the recent heavy rains has wet the Fike gym floor.  Luckily these two play again next week and that game is moved to Fike.

There may not be a bigger basketball game in girls basketball in North Carolina than the one that will be going on just off Old Carriage Road at Nash Central.  The always strong Lady Knights of Northern Nash 6-1 and 16-3 overall invade Nash Central  6-1 17-3.  It is not definite but the winner will likely win the regular season but there is still a week to go.

Missing some all star players this season Northern Nash is still at the top of the possible top teams in the state.  Nash Central has risen to the top this year with new talent and I bet it will be standing room only for this one.

Rocky Mount  3-3 10-6 at Fike 4-2 16-4.  The league has three teams with at least 16 wins and at this point with two losses Fike can't afford another loss.  Rocky Mount actually could tie Fike in the standings if they pull off the upset. Rocky Mount has Fike twice and Northern left on the schedule so they can do a lost of damage to the top tier teams or fall towards the bottom.

Southern Nash 0-7 0-18 at Hunt 1-6 3-16.  If Hunt loses this game they would fall into a tie for last.  Boy have they fell off the map this year.

The boys action will concentrate on the middle for teams tonight.  Two of the three games have the number 2-3-4-5 teams playing each other.  Depending on the outcome 5th could move to second and second fall to fifth.  the way this league is first has no gimme with last.

Northern Nash 2-5 12-7 @ Nash Central 5-2 11-9.  This is the third game of the week for Nash Central.  They had better not take for granted the Knights who still own the best overall record in the conference.  A Northern Victory they could be only one game out of second if the cards fall right for them.

Rocky Mount 3-3 3-13 @ Fike  3-3 8-12.  It is possible that Rocky Mount could be alone in second with a win.  Early season injuries are over and the football players finally  finding a groove makes Rocky Mount dangerous.  The other side of that coin is Fike and Rocky mount still have two meeting before the season ends.  The standings could really shift.

Southern Nash 4-3 11-7 @ Hunt 3-4 8-12.  Depending on the outcome for this one they could be tied or Southern near top and Hunt near the bottom.  Just seems as all these teams in the Big East are rather close in size and ability and any little annoyance to them during any game  can result in a loss.

Last night the University of Virginia made their second trip to the Triangle within a week and for the first time in her career J'Kyra Brown got her first Division one start at Duke.  Playing her career high 30 minutes and hitting three threes and a layup Brown hit 4 of 11 shots for 11 point.  Duke wins how ever 62-47.

The Rise Of Cam Newton

Five years ago the Carolina Panthers drafted Cam Newton the often troubled quarter back Who had just led his college team Auburn University to the football national championship.  His athletic ability was not questioned.  His baggage was his question.  One year on the field at the University of Florida backing up future Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebo.

The first game his sophomore season a broken ankle led to a red shirt season.  Then a stolen personal computer of a Florida student that was in Cam Newton's room until the police knocking on his door found The computer thrown out his dorm window now on the ground.

Off to Binn Junior College where Newton would Win the National Juco championship become a Juco All American and now being heavily recruited for his final two years of college.  Newton chose Auburn but Mississippi State alleges that Newton's Father was asking between 120,000 to 180,000 dollars for Cam to play for them.  His only year at Auburn the Tigers win the National  Championship.

The Carolina Panthers with the worse record in 2010 have the number one pick.  The question do you
Pick the best player or do you pass on him because of his past.  The ultra conservative Panthers picked the best player Cam Newton.

His rookie season is named rookie of the year.  He passed for over 4,000 yards and rushed for 700..  Three times he has played in the Pro Bowl and this year he is the NFL Player of the Year.  They say about many players that they have IT.   Is there any doubt that Cam Newton whether it his ability as an athlete or his leadership qualities Cam Newton has it.

Newton is suppose to be the proto type West Coast Offense quarterback.  His five years the Panther offense has evolved into the Cam Newton proto type offense.  He still throws too much off his back foot and when he does throw an interception like his only one in the NFC championship was an  over throw.  His power despite his only flawed he  can overcome .  His speed can out run any linebacker and when needed he can run over any defensive player on the field.

Other than snatching down Packer Banners or throwing away the 12th Man Seattle flags when was the last time you heard Cam Newton do any thing that would get him in trouble.  He has become the leader that no one in the league envisioned he could be.  He leads the high fives  to fans along the first row and now every touchdown the cameras follow his run to the first row where eager young fans wait for the Cam's Touchdown football.

The Panther have won  the NFL South division for three straight years and 2016 Cam Newton may be leading the Panthers to their first Super  Bowl ever.  If it happens the Panthers will pass almost half the NFL teams that have never won it.

There  are those who still say Cam is not good for the game with his antics.  Monday when the numbers come out I think you will find Cam will be leading the Panthers first Super Bowl win Ever and it will be the most watch ever.  Cam either you love him or hate him and you will see that they will watch him.  Panthers 27-7 Go Panthers!!!!!!

Lady Bulldogs Win Game Of The Night

Wednesday Night Make Up:  Nash Central girls take the lead in Big East basketball beating Southern Nash 51-9.  The Lady Birds have score just 20 points the last two nights against the conference leader in Northern Nash and Nash  Central. The Lady  Bulldogs are 6-1 and Northern 5-1.

They started the night tied for the Big East lead at 4-2.  Southern Nash and Nash Central played a game worthy of the outright lead.  Nash Central lead most of the first half but the Firebirds cranked it up from the outside in the second. But the home team prevails.  Nash Central 65-62 and they have the Big  East lead heading to Friday night action.

Tonight in the Dog Pound two of the three teams tied for first in the girls side of the ledger of Big East basketball play a game worthy of a championship.   Fike sporting a 16-3 record and Nash Central 15-3 tied with Northern Nash for the top spot but the loser will fall to third.

Nash Central had control early but Fike would not go down easily.  Fike found it hard to lead as every time they came close Nash Central would edge out only for Fike to tie the game.  Down the stretch Nash Central scores the last five points to beat the Lady Golden Demons 62-57.  Nash Central 5-1 finds themselves tied with Northern Nash 5-1  who laid a whipping on winless Southern Nash 50-11.

Rocky Mount Lady Gryphons jump out to a very comfortable 32-10 lead of Hunt but a rally by the Lady Warriors cut the lead to ten at the half 34-24.  No need to worry as Rocky Mount out scored Hunt  38-18 in the second half and win 74-42.  The Lady  Gryphons were led by Keyanna Spivey who had a career high 37 points.  She almost out scored Hunt by herself.  Rocky Mount has fourth place at 3-3 after Hunt falls to 1-5.

They came into tonight's game with rather mediocre records but both Fike  8-11 and Nash Central 9-9  found themselves tied at the top of the heap in Big East boys basketball  along with Southern Nash.  The final score will be no indication how good this game was as Nash Central defends the home turf beating Fike 67-57.  The Bulldogs are tied with Southern Nash at 4-2.

Southern Nash has a share of first place after defeating Northern Nash 67-58.  The win runs the Firebirds record to 11-6 which is now the best overall record of any Big East team.  The bottom has fallen out for Northern Nash as they drop to 2-5 in conference and 12-7 on the season.

Who in the world can believe this Rocky Mount Gryphon team after a 44-37 win over Hunt has reached the five hundred mark in conference play.  Losing their first 13 games of the season the Gryphons find themselves only one game out of first with threes games to go.  Hunt drops to 3-4.

Tonight was the first and second round of the Wrestling duels.  Fike 32-3 and Rocky Mount 22-19 were the only Big East teams to make the state tournament.  Rocky Mount traveled to Swansboro and  if victory comes then there is another match but Rocky Mount falls 37-33.  Next week will begin the singles portion of wrestling now that for Rocky Mount the team competition is over.  The results were even worse  for Fike As they lose at Cleveland 72-30.  The Big East is out of the state duel championships.

Three Way Ties At Top

Two weeks to go and the boys Big East race has a three way tie for first.  Oddly enough the three teams tied have all had one game missed and will have to play three games in one of the two remaining in order to complete the regular season.  Fike, Nash Central and Southern Nash all stand at   3-2 while Hunt stands even at 3-3.  Rocky Mount is 2-3 and Northern Nash trails at 2-4.

Fike 3-2 8-11 travels to Nash Central 3-2 9-9.  Two teams tied at the top and the loser falls almost to the bottom.

Northern Nash 2-4 12-6 at Southern Nash 3-2 10-6.  A victory by Southern and there will be a two way tie for first.  A victory by Northern and somebody else will be in last.

Hunt 3-3 8-11 at Rocky Mount 2-3 2-13.  Hunt is just a half game back and a victory they can stay just a half game back.  If Rocky Mount wins they will have won three in a row and just seven days ago they were just hoping for a win.

The girls like the boys have three teams tied at the top all standing at 4-1.  The boys only have two teams with  overall winning records while those three tied at the top in the girls race have a combined 45-9 record.

Two of those one loss teams collide Fike 4-1 16-3 at Nash Central 4-1 15-3.  This is a heavy weight bout.  The loser falls to third.

Northern Nash 4-1 14-3 at Southern Nash 0-5 0-16.  This will be the last easy one for Northern. Their last three games will be against the three other winning teams in Big East.

Hunt 1-4 3-14 at Rocky Mount 2-3 9-6.  Last gasp for both these teams.  Both still could finish as high as second but not with a loss.

Bishops Swipe Two Wins Over Weekend

The Battling Bishops of North Carolina Wesleyan were home for single games on both Saturday and Sunday.  They won both Saturday beat Piedmont 77-69 and on Sunday took down William Peace 73-68.

Saturday three players carried the load as Brandon Brown tossed in 22 and pulled down 9 rebounds and received  help from Adrian Moore with 19 points and D J Weaver aided with 16.

Sunday Adrian Moore capped off a fine weekend by leading the Battling Bishops scoring 20 points.  Shannon Huff added 16 and the only other double digit scorer was Devontae Williams with 10. Brandon Brown had double digit rebounds pulling down 10 boards.

The two wins give the Battling Bishops six wins  in conference play with only two losses.  That is good for a tie for second in Conference USAA.  Huntingdon  is in first without a conference loss to date.

The girls played two games over the weekend but both were on the road.  Saturday the Lady Bishops knocked off Mary Baldwin 89-56 while on Sunday they stopped in Raleigh where they were knocked down by William Peace 57- 69.

The victory on Saturday produced three double digits scorers.  Jermaiyah Baker led the way with 19. Dijah Davis produced 12 and Nash Central's Timyra Staton added 10.  Only two Lady Bishops wrangled double digits Sunday during their lost at William Peace with Kechae Parker  dropping 17 and Nadiya Hollley 13.

The Lady Bishops are 8-11 overall and 5-5 in Conference USAS.

The football championships this past December were the last events that former assistant commissioner of The NCHSAA Rick Strunk participated in..  Rick's main job on any championship day was make sure all media credentials were in order.  His retirement has  brought on former Capitol Broadcasting Sports reporter James Alverson to replace Strunk.  If you heard any of the high school football games of the week on 99.9 The  Fan, James is the play by play man.  Good luck James.
