Hunt Strikes Again

Friday the Warriors of Hunt took down the Gryphon football team for the first time in eight years. Saturday the Hunt soccer team beat Gryphon soccer for the second time this season.

Even though there are two regular season games left the Hunt-RM soccer match was the game for the title. If Rocky Mount wanted any part of first place they needed this one.

Hunt struck early but Justin Marsigli responded for the Gryphons to tie the score at the twenty three minute mark. Hunt scored twice before the half to take command 3-1. Hunt added a goal early but once again Justin Marsigli added a penalty kick to cut the lead to 4-2 with twenty nine minutes to play.

Most of the day Hunt applied the pressure and when the Gryphons got chances the Hunt defense denied the Gryphons scoring opportunities Only once in the last twenty nine minutes did the Gryphons get pas t the Hunt defense to get a clear shot and that one ricocheted of the side post.

This is only the second lost of the second for the Gryphon soccer team and clinches first seed for Hunt.

Girls volley ball plays Hunt's girls for the conference tournament championship Tuesday night at Southern. Lady Gryphons beat Hunt twice during the regular season but the last time at home took five games. Lady Gryphons try to sweep the regular season and tournament, first serve is 6.00pm Tuesday night.

Volley ball opens up their playoffs Thursday night at home with White Oak with a 6.00pm first serve.

Girls tennis has a home playoff match a first round match Tuesday. I believe this is the team playoffs this week. Next week the individuals have another playoffs so two playoffs kind of go along together.

Finally today I need to respond back to Anthony and make sure he has his facts right. Anthony I was there in 2000-2002. In fact 2000 was the first time I volunteered my services to the program. 2002 I was the play by play voice for radio. So I have been there in the lean times.

I have a forty year legacy with the Gryphons. Even when they were the Blackbirds. I have had the pleasure of playing sports actively for forty seven years. I was a little league catcher, a junior high school wide receiver in football, and a scoring forward in basketball.

I was a Tri-Athelete in high school where I played football, baseball, and basketball. I also played division II basketball in college. I have had the opportunity to coach a the AAU level and experience the pleasure of seeing the lives of kids change through sports.

I have won city league championships, and a State Baseball Championship. I have watched countless games over many, many years. I attended a coaching seminar in 1974. There I first met Dean Smith, who was one of five speakers that day.

He is was a great coach and wonderful person. The one thing that resonated with me that he said was this.."If you want to become a coach make sure you are accountable for your mistakes, and acknowledge that to your players that builds trust and respect".

I am not a big time sports announcer, sports writer, or super wise know it all. I am, and will always be a student of the game. Coaches move from team to team driven only by career goals, but high school athletes are only driven by their love of the game.

That's why I feel so deeply about the kids, not just winning or losing. My high school coach once made a half time speech when we were on a seven game winning streak. We were getting blistered 28 to 0. He barked "Even if you lose....play like you want to win!!"

I love high school sports, and I love the Gryphons. That is why I feel as strongly as I do about the current season. You often reflect into the past about your sports ties with great passion. I respect that, and I have never commented on that.

I feel that these kids deserve better from this coach. Like it or not that's the way I feel and many other Gryphons fans feel the same way too.
