I listen to the Saturday game on radio and the Tar Heel announcers we going over why North Carolina was going to make the NCAA regardless of finishing ninth or not. North Carolina today is in the RPI ranks 21. Boston College 45 and N C State 49. Just three weeks ago State was in the 90's so it is no longer a given Carolina will get in. Can nine teams from the ACC get in?, probably not.
The three guaranteed games for State will be against Clemson, Georgia Tech and Virginia Tech. Carolina needs State to lose all three. State and Carolina are both 36-20. Should State win all three they could pass Carolina in the RPI. If they lose all three then Carolina may be back in the picture.
Boston College has Virginia, Miami and Florida State, just like State if they win all three they could pass the Tar Heels. If they get beat three times it helps Carolina. Even though I bleed Wolfpack red I want Carolina in the NCAA because I pull for all the local schools except when they play State. Having made the College World Series four straight years I would like for them to at least lose in a regional over not getting a chance at all to get back.
They are not playing and there is a possibility that teams that do play this weekend in conference tournaments could pass Carolina just because the way the RPI works you get credit for playing highly ranked teams win or lose. If you win you get added credit.
Adding to Carolina's list of things we don't want to happen is a team whether it's State, Boston College or any bubble team win their conference tournaments. I hate to be the bearer of bad news for the Tar Heels but just three or four years ago Georgia Tech did not make the NCAA tournament and had an RPI of 23.
There is an old saying "You made your bed and now must lie in it".
Carolina must lay and wait.
