Former Rocky Mount High School football player Travis Cobb has won the Pac-10 Special teams player of the week after his 100 yard kickoff return help Arizona upset Iowa in college football over the weekend.
The 100 yard returned tied the school record for the longest play in Arizona Wildcat history. Arizona was ahead 14-0 and Iowa scored to cut the lead in half when Travis took the ensueing kickoff to the house.
I had been going back and forth between games watching the finish to the Notre Dame-Michigan State game waiting for the Wake Forest game to come on at 11.15 Saturday night. I came back and the score was 21-7 after just being 14-0 a few minutes earlier.
Got a note from Charles Alston that my comment yesterday about the last time Northern Nash had made the football playoffs was November 10th 2005. They played Eastern Randolph on a Thursday night and Charles comment was one of the coldest nights for November football.
Eastern Randolph was quarterbacked by Scott Riddle who went on to Elon to Become Terrell Hudgins passing mate. This past Saturday Riddle broke several career passing records in the Southern Conference.
Most of you know that because of his N C State connection I am a Philip Rivers fan and I hold the Chargers in high esteem right along with the Carolina Panthers. Sunday Rivers threw for 344 yards as the Chargers killed the Jacksonville Jags. It was the 15th 300 yard game in Rivers career and tied him with one of the all time Charger greats John Hadl for the most 300 yard passing games.
Hadl played during the so called old AFC which was a pass happy league. Hadl played for the Chargers from 1962-1972 to get his 15th 300 yard games. Rivers in his 7th season reached his 15th in his 66th start.
After Sunday's performance Rivers is in striking distance of passing Steve Young as the all time quarterback Passing rating leader. Young during his NFL career posted 96.8 passer rating. After Sunday's game Rivers career passer rating stands at 96.38.
We all know it only takes one Sunday and stats change. Philip Rivers is the only NFL passer to have over a 100 rating the last two full seasons. This year he is third in passer rating at 107.
