Where's The Defense?

Those of you old enough to remember that Wendy's commercial "Where's the Beef" when the grandmother at a fast food burger joint had all bun and no burger

We must ask the same question this morning for our North Carolina college football teams. Where's the defense?

Those of you that couldn't make it to 2.00am this morning Wake Forest who was 2-0 going to Stanford last night gave up 68 points in losing to the Stanford Cardinal 68-24. This comes on the heels of letting Duke score 48 last week end. Just these past two weeks the Demon Deacons are giving up 56 per game.

If Wake Forest could score 54 on Duke last week then Duke giving up only 62 yesterday at home against the number one team in the country is not all that bad. If you watched any of that game you know Alabama could have scored 80 if they wanted it. I didn't hang around til the end last night but I understand Stanford had the second team in by mid third quarter against Wake Forest.

Then there is ECU. They g ave up 49 opening day, 27 last week and gave up 49 again yesterday to Virginia Tech. ECU is giving up 42 points per game. People in Greenville are thrilled with the Texas Tech offense which has been brought to town but let me tell you the Texas Tech defense didn't win many big games in the last ten years. Yes they did beat Texas that one game but.

Offense bring excitement but defense wins games. During the Philip Rivers era in Raleigh he left college football at that time the number two all time passer in college football history. They scored 44 of Florida State and 38 on Ohio State but didn't win either. Because of those losses and other defensive lapses didn't even get mention for the Heisman Trophy.

After three weeks of college football the ACC has one undefeated team left N C State. Maryland and Wake joined the one loss crowd yesterday. The last ten years N C State has played their worse game of the year at Georgia Tech and that's where they head next weekend. After the way they have played defense the last four years or so who would have ever thought the Wolfpack defense would be solid.

I know this that if somebody doesn't start stopping somebody the ACC will not have enough teams to fill out their bowls list. There will not be many that win six games.
