Thursday is our National Holiday for Veterans and if you are off you can spend the afternoon at the gym watching Girls basketball. Starting at 2.00pm balls will be bouncing for seven teams as they prepare for the 2010-2011 high school basketball season.
The boys will be holding a jamboree Saturday at it cranks up at 10.00 am and will go to at least dark thirty. Ten teams will be in the house as the boys practice against someone besides themselves for the first time. This is the first year in a long time Mike Gainey has had the football members that play basketball at practice missing only the week of the Northern Game.
The defending State Champ Gryphons have a pretty good team coming back but you know everyone will be gunning for you. Just ask the New Orleans Saints in the NFL.
Wednesday night is the third round of the NCHSAA state playoffs at the RM Sports Complex. Rocky Mount host (using football terms we might all understand the Western Alamance of Soccer) Jacksonville. We can all remember with pain that Western knocked the Gryphons out of the playoffs three times in four years. Two of those years we were probably the best team in the state.
Jacksonville is the king pin of high school soccer in the east. They have had their share on trouble in the finals but in order to play home Saturday Rocky Mount must pull off the up set and playing on Nash County soil we hope help even though it is not Nash Street.
I would hope the crowd Wednesday is a Hugh one as the Gryphons will need every ounce of support the fans can give them in order to win this game. Compared to the home bleachers for soccer there are bleachers there but I recommend bringing a folding chair and line the sidelines by Church street. When I say a Hugh one I hope one thousand are there. They need to be Gryphon fans Not Cardinals.
