Dream Ends For Northern Girls
Every coach knows his teams weaknesses. Grover Battle has been saying that the playoff run his girls team had made was a blessing because they are so young. Next year was suppose to be our year. Tonight everyone cheering for the Lady Knights of Northern Nash found out that this was not their year.
South Central was too tall, too fast and too experienced for the young Knights as they will now head to the State Championship with their boys team who were also East regional winners today.
Northern lost four games on this season three at the hands of their arch rival Rocky Mount and now once to the Falcons of South Central. Rocky Mount lost three times to South Central and once to Northern for their four losses. In a very small way South Central had to to come through Nash County in order to make it to the State championship game in Reynolds Coliseum in Raleigh Next Saturday.
Grover and all the girls can be proud of what they did for us all this season. Northern season ends one step short of Raleigh.
South Central 47-Northern Nash 24
I received soon very good news about former Gryphon baseball player Dillon Cockrell. Dillon now a sophomore at UNC is on a club baseball team at Carolina and last week won the South Mid Atlantic player of the week honors . In two games he went 6 for 8 and even pitched some for the Carolina Club team.
Carolina's club team plays a regular schedule just like the varsity and even have a regional championship for the winner. Way to go Dillon!!!!
We all get so wrapped up in sports that we lose our perspective on life where sports should place in our world. Sometimes defeat brings us back to earth and the ultimate calming of our souls is death. This past week a Michigan basketball player made the winning shot to give his team an undefeated season only to fall dead minutes later during the team celebration.
We all want to win every game but in every game there is a loser. Most of the time the winning team was the better team and someone had to lose. I don't think there is anyone anywhere if they knew the future and could know ahead of time that was about to happen would want to win if it meant a life will be lost. I will be praying for this young man and his family and friends during their lost. I will also pray that we keep sports in perspective.
