Easter baseball Tournament Underway

The Gryphons of Rocky Mount High school were early risers this morning in order to be at South Johnston High for a 10.00am game.

The Gryphons were rocked in a 16-4 lost in the opening round of the South Johnston Easter Tournament by West Johnston. . I think Jeremy  Johnson started and was knocked out.  He took a  line drive off his leg and had to taken out in the first inning.   Matt Berry and Sam Lilley finished up the game.  Collin Watson was hurt on a play at the plate and this brought Andy Morris to catch the rest of the game and probably the tournament
If I remember correctly last year one of the Berry Twins got hurt during this tournament and had to DH for the remainder of the season.

The news is not any better in the second game today as the Gryphons lose by a score to 10-6.  Jeremy Johnson who came out of the first game after taking a line drive to his leg while pitching did play left field in the second game so that is one injury which we hope will not linger.  Collin Watson did not play in the second game.

I have no true information but I believe that Benton Moss will pitch Tuesday Morning when the Gryphons play in the 7/8 place game. Benton will be going after victory 29 which would make him the winningest pitcher in Gryphon history.  Sad to think that if he should win it would keep the Gryphons out of last place in the Tournament instead of a more important game.

All right North Carolina basketball fans, you can go ahead and start ordering you 2012 National championship gear for next year.  Harrison Barnes announced this morning that he will return for his sophomore season which means every one due to play next year will be back.  Carolina will be the preseason #1 in College Basketball.

Did I mention that N C State beat Carolina three times in baseball over the weekend?  The good news for those that either were at the games in Raleigh, watched on the internet or listened on the radio.  Hobbs Johnson got into his first ACC game on Sunday.  Carolina was trailing 10-0 at the time as Hobbs came in the game with a runner on first and the batter singled to left but was thrown out at second trying to stretch it into a double.  He struck out one batter in the inning he pitched.

This makes five appearances for  HJ and he has yet to give up a run in 3.1 innings of work and has six strikeouts.

Hobbs gives Mike Fox  reasons to use him more as he starts to show he can be depended on to get outs.  Let's see if this weekend if Hobb might see some action when the score is closer or the game means more.

DeShawn  Freeman Northern Nash Center/power forward made the all State High school basketball team.  He is only a sophomore so everyone in the league has to face him for two more years.

Sad News to Report:

A Northern Nash JV baseball player Spenser Davis was killed early Sunday morning when his car went off the road on Halifax Road and he over corrected.  The accident happened just beyond the intersection of Halifax Road and Hunter Hill Road up near where the pond is that has the fake Alligators.

We all have heavy hearts for the Davis Family and the Northern Nash High School Family during their time of need.  His visitation will be from 6:30-9 on Tuesday night at Wheeler and Woodlief Funeral Home.  We will all be praying.
