HOLY COW SOFTBALL WINS!!!!!!!

There is something special about sports that despite losing in football 40-0 when you score a touchdown there is a celebration.  Tonight regardless of having lost 37 straight games dating all the way back to the opening round of the last New-6 tournament in 2009 the Lady Gryphons of Rocky Mount have won a softball game.  There is joy in Mudville as Casey has hit a home run.  The Lady Gryphons have won the State Championship(at least for tonight).Tara McDonald wins her first game as coach of the Lady Gryphons.

Last Wednesday Fike had beaten Rocky Mount 21-9.  I told you a couple of weeks ago that this team was on the verge of winning but that was while they were playing non-conference games.  Since conference play had started they have been beaten by ten runs or more in just about every conference game. One thing happened in the Fike game last week that  Coach McDonald tried Samantha Westphal  the second baseman on the mound and she did a decent job.  Last Thursday the Lady Gryphons scared Southern Nash to death before giving up 14 runs in the seventh to lose 24-10.

Tonight the Ladies get five great innings from Westphal who walked only two batters, when she left the game the Ladies led 6-0.  Fike scored four in the sixth but Rocky Mount responded with three more in the bottom of the sixth to lead 9-4.  Fike scored four in the top of the seventh while the Ladies could only get one out an a runner on first. Then it happened the play of the year for the Lady Gryphons.  A ground ball was hit to shortstop Brittany Battle who stepped on second and threw to first for a game ending, streak ending, tear flowing victory.  There is a good thing that tomorrow's game is at Northern Nash because the Mutt Wilson Field will be unplayable after all the tears shed would wash any  game out there tomorrow..

Rocky Mount 9   Fike 8

Clytesha Garner, Carmen Richardson,Precious White, Brittney Battle, Kushunn Seabreeze, Sakeya Battle, either got hits or scored the runs to help bring on victory.  Casey Phillips, Passion Brown and Sara Mosley were helpers on defense as the ladies had one of their best nights of the year on defense.

This team lead by Tara McDonald has more fun than any team I have ever seen and this includes last year.  Regardless of the score they just keep playing and cheering for each other.

Tonight they cried with each other after VICTORY
