Post 58 began conference play Tuesday night by making a trip to Ahoskie where in eights inning Rocky Mount won 19-1. This is the first of nine conference games and Post 58 evens their record on the year at 3-3 and now 1-0. Thursday they host Ahoskie Post 102 at Nash Central High School.
Sure does seem like cheating is running rampant in college athletic these days. I don't think it is any worse right now as any other time. There are too many people in this world that would rather take a short cut than do things the right way whether we are taking sports or in life in general.
There is always a sentiment that players should be paid which I think that is non-sense. Every athletic scholarship has some sort of stipend with it, even the Morehead, UNC highest award has a stipend included. To say that athletes are not paid enough I say this. What is enough? If players were paid $10,000 per year extra there would be somebody willing to give that athlete something else under the table.
If you did away with all athletic scholarships people would still pay the best players to come play for me. Our capitalistic society is a great system but like all systems it has it false. It tends to make everyone me first.
I do think that coaches have to be held more accountable than they are. Jim Tressel not only lied to the NCAA but a pattern of looking the other way was a way of life at Ohio State. The sad thing about looking the other way it not only happens in athletics but it happens all the time in every day life. We will never straighten our athletics until we straighten out ourselves.
We fancy ourselves as honest hard working people. Not much of either goes on in our country these days. Honest or hard working because we had rather look the other way. It takes too long to get what I want if I have to work for it.
One of these days our country will fall because we will have lost that whatever it takes to get the job done right attitude.
