Big East Flexes Muscle

Rocky Mount girls clobbered Hunt in the second half but the first half belonged to Hunt as they shot to a 33-28 halftime lead. The Lady Gryphons held Hunt to only ten points in the second half and cruise to 68-43 victory over conference foe Hunt.

J'Kyra Brown was cold from the outside but consistently went to the basket and lead the way for the Gryphons with 25 points.  Tia Hudgins added 19 and 13 rebounds.  Alexus Cooper 14 and Carmen Richardson 10 were the double figure scorers for Rocky Mount.  Up next the team that knocked them out of the playoffs last year and beat the Ladies three times on their way to the State Championship South Central a 68-61 winner today. Rocky Mount did win at South Central on December 12th 44-42 so you can look for a close one on Wednesday.

The Rocky Mount boys jumped on Eastern Wayne 8-0 before the Warriors had their first shot and 18-0 before they tickled the twine for the first time.  Rocky Mount coasted from there to win 90-68 and advance to round two.  Every player that dressed got at least five minutes of action including Dominque McFarlin who tossed in four three pointers and finished with 14 in about five minutes work.

Terrill Hilliard 19, Levon Brutus 18, Donte Battle 14 were also double digit scorers.  The Gryphon master of Dunk K J Peoples had three throw down dunks as the Gryphons hardly broke a sweat.  Up Next for Rocky Mount Nash Central a 72-45 winner over Havelock.  This sets up another double header Wednesday night with the girls matched with South Central and Rocky Mount boys against Nash Central.  I suspect you will need to get there early if you want to see  the boys game.

Nash Central girls rode to Hertford County and came away with a 56-55 win on the road.  They will now head to Cleveland High a 35-33 winner over  West Brunswick.  Northern Nash blew a 20 point lead and fell behind but were able to right the ship and beat Havelock 58-51.  They will now be on the road Wednesday night at C B Aycock who was a 56-47 winner over D H Conley.

Southern Nash boys  who has played very well since Christmas but has had a hard time with Rocky Mount traveled to Southern Wayne and the Firebirds live to play another day as they won 57-51 over the Saints.  They will now head northeast on Wednesday traveling to Hertford County  a 72-45 winner over Southern Vance.  The fourth member of the Big East boys Hunt traveled to South Central and lost 59-49.

Not a bad night at all for the Big East as the boys went 3-1 and the girls 2-0 and of course in the other game played each other so three boys teams and three girls teams are still alive to play Wednesday.
