The 2015 NFL football season is the last season under the six year deal Philip Rivers signed in 2009. That contract was for a dollar or two 93 million. That came on the heels of his six year rookie contract of 60 million.
There is plenty of chaos in San Diego right now. The City and the Chargers has been negotiating for 15 years about a new stadium and the fight has intensified with San Diego signing on as one of three teams that may move to Carson California or another site in LA. The city has been told by the Chargers they must be an agreement in place for a new stadium by September 15th or they will pursue moving in 2016.
Philip Rivers has said all preseason that he wanted no part of moving up I-4 to LA. If he was to sign on any longer with the Chargers he wanted that done by training camp which was missed by 17 days.
Rivers has stated in the past that he wanted to finish his career as a Charger in San Diego and then move home to Alabama to be a high school coach. He didn't want to uproot has family of seven kids five girls and two boys and another on the way until his NFL career was over.
Does this give us a hint that the Chargers are staying south of LA? Probably not but it guarantees that Philip Rivers will retire a Charger anytime now and the end of the 2019 season. By the way he will stand behind the center each year for 21 million dollars. Without a Super Bowl on his resume' how does Rivers command this kind of money.
The nine years he has been a starting quarterback he has had more different lineman thrown to more receivers than any other quarterback during that span. All this means is he has had less up front healthy linemen than any other quarterback and it didn't care who was there to catch it he would throw it under more pressure than any quarterback during that time and throw it where regardless of who the receiver was could catch it.
During his nine years as a starting quarterback he has the second longest game streak of 144. He is third in wins with 88 trailing only Peyton Manning and Tom Brady. Seven straight Years with at least 25 touchdown passes tied with Peyton and Drew Brees which is and all time NFL record. He is 16th on all time NFL list td passes 252 needs three more to be all time Charger leader. He is 20th in passing yardage with 36,655. He holds the all time NFL record of five straight games with 20 passing attempts and a passer rating of over 120.
Still today is is 7th in NCAA history in passing yards 13,484. Still holds NC State passing records in yardage, pass attempts. Pass completions, completion percentage, 19 passing games over 300 yards and 7 games over 400 yards. He is the all time wins leader at State with 34.
I am glad there is a chance to watch Philip Rivers for at least five more years if he decides to play.
